Patreon updates Terms of Service to clamp down on adult content

Do they have a Western version of that site? If not wouldn't all Adult Content from outside of Japan still have to follow Japanese law/restrictions re:censorship?

I don't pay anyone to make R-18 pictures of Pikachu so I don't have more details about that (I don't even support people on Patreon either), all I know is that this site exists and that many Japanese artists are uploading their stuff there. That's why I said it's an option that will be more attractive now. And if you asked me they should take advantage of this opportunity and expand like Pixiv did a few years ago.

Maybe not the majority. But a pretty big chunk of it. Notice how many of those tabs on that site are labeled adult. They might not dominate the top 50 list, but there's A LOT of adult stuff on patreon

Looking over the top 200, 25%(50 exactly) are NSFW. Quick scan over the next few hundred, seem to stick around there, but go up slightly.

Can't get enough of your necrophilic beastility porn? Seems like nothing crazy. Flag your adult stuff as adult, and don't go too crazy with the fetishes.
i mean, do you honestly care if thats what i look at even? why should anyone care about artists making that content, its not like they are forcing you to consume it. obviously keep it off publicly viewable spaces but it seems like more than that

I don't understand. Will artists like Sakimichan be able to give NSFW versions of their drawings to $2, $5, $10 etc patrons? Is this a "pornographic material"?

It's not a blanket ban on adult content tho, just specific adult content while also giving stricter guidelines on allowed adult content.

Sure, for now. And what happens when someone comes along that offers the same service as patreon, but targeted specifically at adult content makers.

It's a what if scenario for now, but I would say it's one with a high probablity

No, not unless they depict any of the restricted content. At least that's my understanding. Until this point, Patreon has been highly supportive of adult content creators, they even managed to negotiate with PayPal to allow users to support creators using their services - something PayPal doesn't usually support.

I don't think Patreon is actively trying to edge out creators here, as much as they are trying to keep things neat and tidy. As far as I've known they've never really allowed or endorsed real pornography through the site. Them clamping down on certain fictional content (such as depictions of rape), is probably just a part of their mission to avoid trouble and controversy... still though this is where things get tricky. Have you ever seen hentai pictures before? Who is to say that that drawing of rough sex with a submissive looking figure is a consensual situation or not? What if one person views it a certain way, and somebody else another? I guess it'll be up to creators to very clearly state their intent before and after posting such things.

Thanks for the explanation. I guess i don't have to worry about my favs then.
Tho yea, certain erotic art can be up to interpretation, that's really something they have to figure out with clear guidelines so nobody will be in with a suspended account from one day to the next

This part
For example, survivor stories or fiction such as Game of Thrones or Lolita are allowed on Patreon.
seems to be more about how you can still write about stuff that's already R rated.

(basically) All porn is "fiction".
I assume they use the good all "You just know it when you see it" to identify porn.

Because you could definitely use the argument for gratuitous, titillating etc etc, to describe the sexual contents of Game of Thrones (as an example).

Not saying there's no separation between that and Brazzers, but the line is not always going to be that clear.

If i was an artist making Berserk, would that fly? What about Golden Boy? Is that art or pornography?

anyway, as others stated, someone creating a Porntreon is the most obvious solution.

I'm not sure either. Would it somehow be more okay if she gave the nsfw versions away for free?

Lastly, you cannot sell pornographic material or arrange sexual service(s) as a reward for your patrons. You can’t use Patreon to raise funds in order to produce pornographic material such as maintaining a website, funding the production of movies, or providing a private webcam session.

Then they'll still have SFW creators. Patreon isn't solely for NSFW material. And it's sorta the main site, when stuff like this happens you always hear about possible replacements now being likely and those replacements rarely work out or make anywhere near as much.

Imagine if VHS could/would have blocked the sale of porn back in the day. We'd remember Betamax more fondly now and VHS would be the loser of the war.

This is really short-sighted. Someone will come along and make a killing off this and Patreon will lose out big time.

porn studios have parodied copyrighted characters for years without problem.

A parody is different from "here's a drawing of Wonder Woman", whether Wonder Woman is naked or not. There's no transformative aspect to most fan art, and so it wouldn't be considered a parody under US or European copyright law.

Right, but i'm wondering how they're going to draw the line.
Many pieces of art represent touchy material (not just sexual, either) in different ways, and not always easy to determine what people will and will not find acceptable.

As i said, something like Golden Boy or Berserk or similar mangas, aren't all that easy to place.
They're certainly questionable, but not outright pornography.

I understand that having a furry porn game as one of your top earners, doesn't paint the most glamorous image for your service, but i think this could lead to a lot of confusion, with gray area examples.

Good luck to them enforcing this, though.

What's so transformative about a porn movie, that isn't about a porn drawing? Genuine question.

For you.
This fucking disturbingly regressing looking at the full terms.

The fact that Patreon priority is on attacking porn instead of banning the alt-right fuckshits whose content is nothing but hate speech and harassment campaigns, Patreon can fuck the hell off.

Child porn certainly is.
That was already against the terms. Nothing changed on that end.

But why?

They're not doing anything that needs to be shut down. No one is being harmed.

It feels spiteful and puritanical in a bad way.
I'm very far away from being a prude, heck I find being a prude ridiculous, but it's not hard to see people are exploiting sex (or the illusion of it) and simply using cosplay as a means to grow an audience that will happily (sadly in my opinion) hand over their money, it's the reason I don't like people like Jessica Nigri, but I realize I'm in the minority here.

they did ban that moron that tried to stop immigrant boats, IIRC.

why is it any of your business what people do with their money, tho? That's pretty patronizing of you.

I'm legitimately confused who you think the exploited party is here

If people feel like thats worth their money, thats their problem. Not feeling like a thing is worth it isn't a reason to ban shit.

And I realize it sounds patronizing, which is why I hardly comment in this kind of topics. If anything, I agree it should be flagged as mature content, not outright banned because that would be going too far.

The party handing over their money, of course.

I mean it simply doesn't make sense. If you're paying money to wack it, you're not being exploited, you're just spending money on something you like. Nobody is forcing you to spend money on sex-related things unless you have some kind of serious impulse control issue that's beyond the scope of Patreon or whatever service is used for camming these days.

It's exploitative in the sense that literally every transaction that occurs in the world is exploitative.

In the case of cosplay, that's basically people doing what they want with their money.
