Super Marcato Bros. VGM Podcast MEGATHREAD

OK. After being told several times to stop making weekly threads and just make one main thread for the podcast, I have listened. From now on all things about the SMB VGM Podcast will go here.

We kick off the thread with the latest episode:

Episode 207: Terranigma

Euro GAF where you at?! This is one of those excellent soundtracks that North America did not get to enjoy during its original release because the game was never released there on the SNES. For years though, anybody who has been into SNES music must be a big fan of this soundtrack. I know I am and the Super Marcato Bros. are definitely feeling it in this weeks episode.

Best game, best soundtrack.

Just today I'm up to Episode 91... slowly but surely...

Edit: Also, what does Marcato mean? That's not their last names...

They explained that in some of the mid-era episodes but I completely forgot :)

Actually, you should soon arrive at the episode that addresses this question :D

A marcato is a musical articulation. Like a more powerful version of an accent, though depending on composer, time period, etc. it has slightly different performance connotations in real-world practice.

An articulation is a means of indicating how you want a note to be played, and is usually indicated on a note-by-note basis (sometimes it's on every note in a piece!) ( some can mean play a note longer, shorter, with emphasis, with intensity, separated, flowing, connected but separate, deliberate, louder, softer, heavier, etc.). Sometimes these are referred to as style or expression markings.

Episode 208: Mobile Games

Pretty straightforward. The Bros. tackle various tunes from games which are mainly exclusive to mobile devices. Fun hearing some dissent on the Threes tune. Especially because on the Cane and Rinse podcast the folks really dug it and one or maybe more of them actually bought the song on itunes. I personally am sick of the Super Hexagon tunes at this point (and my complete failure at any of the higher difficulties). Only surprising omission for me was no Sword and Sworcery. I always saw that as the big iOS game back in the day.

Episode 209: Superheroes!

You superhero nerds dwelling in your mom's basement eating Hot Pockets like a bunch of unwashed freaks! Ehm, I mean, you folks out there who enjoy superheroes will be glad that this weeks episode focuses on soundtracks to games about superheroes. A strong Batman bias on this tracklist which is just what like. Batman and Spiderman are the two superheroes that have always been my favorite. X-Men are pretty cool too. Never cared much for Superman because of his power. But hey, who cares. We're here for the tunes.

Episode 210: Mega Man 9 & 10

Mega Man 9 and 10. A throwback to the NES days that got a positive reaction. Mega Man's current status leaves us wondering how long will it take until there will be new Mega Man music. Hopefully that day comes in this decade. The boys dig the 9 OST more than 10. What about you fellows?

Episode 211: Undertale

Well well well. It's the indie darling of 2015. The many GAF threads sure made everyone here at least take notice of this game made by 1 dude. Noted for its gameplay, art style, interesting characters, and yes its music. Heck even Smooth McGroove has recently been doing some a cappella versions in his youtube channel. It's no surprise that this game is getting its own spotlight. The Bros. have always been very positive whenever they featured any of the tracks from this game.

Episode 212: Under the Sea

This episode is full of stone cold classics. Everything is related to water levels. Going into the episode I thought to myself "ooo I don't know. I don't like water levels". But track after track I started to think "wait a minute. So many of these tracks are amazing. Maybe I just hate bad water levels". A little bit of Aquatic Ambience is always a good thing.

Episode 213: Vocals

Man I am pumped about this episode. So different from pretty much all the other shows. Some big hitter like Nier (yes you guys should totally do a spotlight on this game. Best soundtrack of the last generation), Katmari Damacy, Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy and many others. At the time of writing this I'm only halfway through and this has been such an uplifting episode. But, I can't help notice that the Bros. are once again ragging on Da Man Takenobu Mitsuyoshi. You can hate all you want Karl and Will but this is the same guy who does vocals on Burning Rangers. Who's laughing now hahaha... ehm, ok. The Parappa the Rapper 2 track had me laughing on public transport. Amazing tune. Seriously just the best.

Like I said, I'm only halfway through this episode but I'd say it might be my favorite one so far this year.

P.S. Metal Gear Solid 1 takes place in Alaska. Shadow Moses.

At the time the playlist is not given and I'm afraid I don't have the time to transcribe it. It's a mix of all kinds of good tunes as the Bros. play whatever they like and show off things that they have been wanting to share for some time or have just recently found. I was happy that Einhander found its way into the playlist. If the tracklist gets posted I'll update.

Episode 221: Do-Over: Arcade Games

Arcade game soundtracks had an episode already way back near the start of the podcast. As the Bros. explain, they felt that there were some things about the episode that didn't sit right with them so this time they try to do things right. This episode definitely hits some nostalgia factors for those who got to enjoy the arcades in their heyday. But you might still run into some of these games at your movie theater or theme park (or the odd arcade within a 100 mile radius). If you are extra lucky and located in Japan you have somewhat easy access to actual arcades even today. Street Fighter 2, X Men, Turtles in Time. Those immediately bring up some memories for me.

There was also a bonus episode where they did a "remastered" version of Street Fighter 2. The Guile's theme "remaster" was kind of bleh. Cant stand the twanginess of the Genesis sound chip. SNES for life!

Not a big fan of their remaster there.

Episode 230: Bomberman

A series which has been going on forever finally gets its own spotlight. Recognize any of these tunes? I actually don't because frankly I've never played a single game in this franchise. I'm not even aware of any new releases in forever except for that one weird "realistic" attempt back on the 360 which was met with great disdain. Who cares though. The music is pretty cool.

Episode 233: Puzzle Games

Puzzle games of old and new and those that cross genres. it's all here in this week's episode. A genre that rarely is thought of when it comes to AAA games, but one which has never gone away for any time even if it is mixing together with other genres like the Portal series which is represented. Heck The Witness came out this year and got lots of buzz (though not in this episode haha).

Episode 240: Resident Evil

Yes. An episode that is very fitting for Halloween. Can you believe the series has been here for two decades now? I'll let the podcast do the talking about the music and instead talk about a little Resident Evil story myself. I was in high school. Resident Evil 4 was the game. It was THE game. Unbelievable. So good. And you know what? Leon had the best damn hair ever. I happened to have hair that was a little longer myself and it was time for a change. I was gonna go get that Leon S. Kennedy haircut. Turns out it just wasn't the right fir for me. Skipped school the next day and decided to opt for a short cut. Oh well, Leon still has the coolest hair.

And Bros. The reason why Biohazard is not used in the west is because of the band Biohazard. Some shitty metal/nu metal band. The lead singer married Tera Patrick. That's all there is to that.

Also, I missed updating for the last two episodes. Definitely check out the previous episode which is a lengthy interview with Chad Seiter.

November is Nintendo month.

Hey peeps! It's been awhile since this thread was updated, so I thought I'd share a couple exciting Marcato Bros. updates!

1) Recently we were featured in Buzzeed's 22 Podcasts That Will Make You a More Interesting Person list! Pretty crazy stuff. There's the article in case anyone is curious.

2) We recently started our 11th Season of the podcast! Insane. Our premiere episode covered endings in video game music:
Episode 251: Al Fine

3) In case some of you didn't know, we recently started performing classic VGM covers in a live band setting! It's been super fun to play this stuff live. And we have enjoyed trying to be as faithful to the parts as we can. Here's the first video we released from a recent recording session. It's Hydrocity Zone Act 2 from Sonic 3!

Peace!
