NeoGAF Games of the Year 2010 Awards

edit: mh, SaitoH has less similar titles than e.g. Kittonwy, I guess the more similar positioning of the games in common makes the difference?
Basically, the score is influenced by the amount of similar titles, how close the relative position of those titles is and how high the respective title is on the list of the person the similarity is calculated for (the idea was: if a game is more important to you then it should have a larger impact on the score).

As I said, I just made the scoring function up on the spot, it's probably far from ideal.

The total score is just a sum over all scores. So higher total score means higher conformance to the collective, while a lower overall score means less conformance.

I don't think they are obscure. Its just most people probably don't think of them as games of the year. I don't even think Umineko should be on the list since its a sound novel.
And they would be wrong. No way is Angry Birds better than DoDonPachi Resurrection, for instance.

I agree Umineko is a borderline case, but it's too awesome not to include. Anyway, I've gotten more hours of meta-gameplay out of that series this year than hours of gameplay I've gotten out of "real games"!

Hello, my new friends. I'm freaked out that seady has such a similar handle to mine. I can only assume he's me from another dimension.

edit: Oh, how do you get ten names instead of five?

Fucking christ, GAFers with no taste. You've failed GAF again.

At least Super Meat Boy made top ten, and not that other artsy-fuckshit sacred cow LIMBO.

Hey, Limbo was good.

I'm with you on Heavy Rain, though it was a nice throwback to the point and click adventures of yesteryear. I can see people getting caught up in the story. Wasn't much of a "game", though.

I have no idea why this is in this thread, but you should start with Alliance, which includes episode 1-4.
Edit: now I know why! Missed that conversation, sorry.

No need to run the script anymore, just look it up in a text file. I'm not reporting the most dissimilar users though, the way the scores are calculated there are probably dozens of "equally dissimilar" users at the other end of everyone's list.

I just noticed that Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood is listed as being made in Europe? Wouldn't it be more accurate to say North America, since Ubisoft Montreal was the primary developer?

Alan Wake over Vanquish is the biggest fail on that list! I knew the latter ones would just be pointless! How does the list look if done another way! We must know. Vanquish must get higher than Alan Wake... NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Excellent work on the thread this year. Much better than last.

It pleases me greatly to see Bayonetta up so far, and interestingly the list is very close to Edge's game of the year awards. At least, closer than many other outlets.

I personally believe GT5 is the odd one out in the 10 (maybe God of War 3 as well). Those two games don't even get a look in just about everywhere else. Though GAF has always had a strong Sony vote (Nintendo too).

That's a cool addition this year. Great work.

Links don't work for people who use 100 posts per page.

Timetokill: Next year I'd recommend making the links to the individual posts rather than the page anchors.

A lot of the big games that came out in 2010 I didn't get a chance to play. I wonder how my list would be different if I had the time to get through every game released last year that I wanted to play.

Great work to the organisers, but I have to say that I have mixed feelings about Mass Effect 2 as Game of the Year. It was very good, but its flaws were such that I don't think it's good enough to nab the top spot. A nonexistent central narrative, weak endgame and third-person shooting which still feels a tad underdeveloped all place it a few notches below the top spot for me.

I'm also disappointed by the lack of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow and the low placement of Vanquish, but hey!

I'm starting to think I should check out Super Meat Boy and Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light.

Couldn't agree with your post more, Amir0x. I'm surprised how much I agree with you these days.

I'm really pleased Super Meat Boy made the list too. Considering the game was mostly constructed by two guys in some apartment, the title is truly an underdog success story. This is especially true considering Gran Turismo 5 comes directly after it on the list (snicker). A strong vision on a shoestring budget can still be a powerful thing.

Yeah, the makers of Super Meat Boy should be genuinely beaming with pride over SMB. It's an outstanding game that is frankly one of the greatest platformers of the last two decades. For such a beginner effort to immediately rank so closer to other platforming greats really says a lot about the type of talent they have.

Also, according to this script, EatChildren is my evil twin. Although he liked DKCR or some shit.

Episode 1 of the PC sound novel would be a good choice.

Or get the PS3 version if you can read Japanese and like the inferior art.

Is Alliance just the 4th one, and it happens to come with the first 3 as well?

And I was wondering about language issues and whatnot, but I just looked at the official thread and I guess most everything's gotten a fan-translation. Probably should have just looked it up instead of asking.

PS3 looks a lot prettier than the PC version but I guess there's no helping it, huh.

I wouldn't call the SMB devs "beginners". The combined portfolio of Edmund and Tommy is pretty large.

Yes, Episode 4 comes with the first three (just like Episode 8 of Umineko Chiru comes with 5-7). And while Ryukishi isn't the greatest artist, you get used to the PC sprites. His faces are something to behold!

Mass Effect 2... the people have spoken, justice has been served :D

4 of my picks made the top 10:

Mass Effect 2
Super Meat Boy
Bayonetta
Heavy Rain

In the platforming genre? I guess I missed their other platformers.

They had of course the abysmal newgrounds version of Meat Boy, which would have instilled as much confidence in their ability to make platformers in somebody as playing Heavy Rain might instill one with confidence that videogames could tell a good story.

If they did make other platformers, though, I'd like to play them

Glad to see Vanquish made top 20 and Bayo made top 5. Favorite retail games of last year along with S&P2(but no way in hell people were voting for that :lol )

A little disappointed ME2 won over RDR, but I think SMG2 and Bayo being right under them is telling that gaf still cares about gameplay to some extent

Okay, thanks! I have a lot to get through right now but hopefully I can check them out sometime down the line.

And I didn't really mean that his artwork is bad or anything, just that the new sprites seem to be a definite step up. It can be a matter of preference, though, I guess.
