We've been talking about moving from the EU3 thread to a more general Paradox-Clausewitz Engine thread, so here it is...

One day, I hope to be able to get into these. I've given EU3 a few attempts but I can never get around the interface. Messages pop up all the time and they really break the flow of the game. It's finally come to my attention that you can change the messaging settings, so maybe that might help.

Yeah, the interface is anything but intuitive, it really put me off the game.

I'm playing EU3 right now for the first time. It's hard, but very rewarding once you manage to beat a province into submission.

I never played such a game before, but I'm interested. So which game would you recommend to start with?

Europa Universalis 3, with all the expansions. It's got just enough of the other specialised games to be a great bridge into them.

Like the combat? Buy Hearts of Iron 3 or the upcoming Napoleon's Campaigns 2.
Like the economy? Buy Victoria 2.
Like the characters? Buy Crusader Kings 2, Sengoku or EU: Rome.
Want more of a challenge? Buy Magna Mundi.

I can't wait for Magna Mundi and Napoleon's Campaigns 2! Having a Clausewitz engine Napoleon focused game is going to be so sweet. I currently own tons of Paradox published strategy games, and own everything as far as the Clausewitz stuff goes; I Really love EU3, been spending most of my time with Victoria 2 (A House Divided truly makes this game shine), and spent Wednesday learning how to REALLY play Hearts of Iron 3 (finally) and having a decent time waging war as Germany. I can do just about everything manually now outside of actually directing the battles (still keeping my two HQs on AI) thinking of weaning myself off that slowly and really learning how to set things up. As far as Tech,Production, Politics, Diplomacy etc, I got that. Even messed around with editing the theaters as the war progresses. I just feel like there is a real night and day difference between HOI 2 and HOI 3. As far as Crusader Kings 2 goes, I bought it the first week it was out, but haven't put more than an hour or two into it. I didn't have much fun with it until I finally played at the King level (England), then things really started to click. (Also what's up with not being able to play as a Muslim country? Do I smell expansion?

Edit: Forgot about CK2

I've been waiting for a decent opportunity to pick up Crusader Kings 2. The demo was amazing even if I had no idea what I was doing.

I have EU3 and HoI3 sitting in my Steam library, but I don't think I'll ever muster up the motivation to try learning them. I'll probably stick to reading Let's Play threads.

I'm spending some spare time modding the map into Westeros and Essos from Song of Ice and Fire, in the hopes that someone else can actually build a full TC out of it... That said I am still a bit clueless about the dynasty style games...

Reading AARs (After action reports, there are some in the official paradox forums) or looking at a Let's play are some good ways to learn how to play paradox games, especially if you find good ones that explain the choices.

Hmm, so I wouldn't exactly recommend Sengoku.

It just seemed to lack depth :-/

Before the game came out, I was watching a lot of ParadoxianLP's LP's as Leon.

He just started a new one as the Hapsburgs.

Has Magna Mundi been released yet?
No.

I haven't read too much about the Napoleonic game. It's made by AGEOD, right? I've tried their games, but I usually suck at them :(

Which version did you play? They also changed the handling of messages for their recent games (and I think they changed it in the latest expansion of EUIII, I think.)

As for the interface as a whole, once you learn it for one game, you pretty much know it for all of them (besides, HOI III, I think. Hard to remember.)

Woo, thread is up! I wonder if we'll ever see an update of Darkest Hour to the HoI3 engine so we can get our Cold War timeline covered.

Here's a pretty good starter guide. Also includes suggestions on message settings and stuff I believe:

Man, I know I keep saying this, but I should really take the time to learn how to play HOI III.

I still can't believe I had trouble powering through Belgium as Germany in one of the few games I tried.

I never picked it up, not really sure why, but if this is the case I'll wait for a low enough sale before buying it.

I haven't really touched many LPs for CK2 aside from skimming a couple for pure entertainment (the game lends itself quite well for weird and funny situations), because I found it to be pretty simple to get right away, at least compared to the other titles, and before that I completely forgot it was coming out soon (oops) so I don't have many suggestion as far as teaching lps go but that youtube channel looks like could be quite the resource.

HOI III wiki, has nation guides.

Germany is pretty forgiving but its biggest problem is resources. With all nations though you should probably have a few core units to build your army around and research/produce the tits off them.

Soviet union units i focus on fighter aircraft, infantry and light tanks, and my spies keep japan out of the axis. Once i have germany+ its allies on the backfoot i just produce what i want then.

I think Hearts of Iron 2 worth a mention as well. It is no where as complicated as HOI3 but still offer pretty complex gameplay.

This is more of a Clausewitz engine thread than anything. HoI2 was Europa engine.

Well, presumably French (and even British) forces were holding you up. As a newer player, I'd advise you to let the AI handle the military part from one of the top levels (HQ level would probably be best), and focus on getting production and research right.

I tried to get into EU III by playing it for an hour but I was having problems so I stopped. Any great tutorials out there or can anyone tell which is the most approachable Paradox map game? From the GB quicklooks, it seemed to me that Crusader Kings seemed a little bit easier.

Having to play T:A for every possible moment of gaming due to the relatively limited amount I have, I've put aside getting into Crusader Kings 2. I think tomorrow morning is the day where I finally break down. Here's hoping I don't miss a week of scrims due to it.

Dude. Do it. Once you learn the interface, each game becomes its own little variation on the theme. The concept is similar to Dwarf Fortress. Once you get over the learning cliff, it's pure bliss.

Could be a lot of work for the OP, but I'd like to see a 'helping hand' guide to each franchise, or just overall. I've kind of learned to play by just blindly fumbling my way through the various games. I'm pretty sure I'm missing out on half a game by doing this, as I have no REAL idea how to build decent armies.

In HoI III I was the US and I sort of just sat there the whole war.
In V II I was the US and I sort of just sat there during everything (again) and manufactured a lot of stuff. Mexico took over the entire Western side of North America. Russia owned Canada. At least I had a lot of 'stuff'.

I've only played HoI II but unless the events engine changed a lot the US is unfortunately one of the worst choices for a fun HoI session. Their late historical entry into the war and near unlimited IC/TC and manpower makes it too tempting to 'game' the war by joining the Allies early, not to mention the pathetic ease of winning a Pacific War you can see coming. The worst part is even if you hold back and let the Japanese overwhelm the Pacific Ocean, sometimes they just don't effing declare war on you, wasting a ton of research you might have plugged in to prepare for a land/sea war.

Europe/Russia is where it's at.

See the EU3 guide I linked to earlier in the thread.

Here's another interesting LP going through a bunch of Paradox games, but some of them are older titles (CK1, V1, HOI2), not a lot of instructional info like the other LP I posted above, but if you follow along you can get a sense what he's trying to do.

Yea... since I've gotten CK2, I haven't even touched Sengoku. It's like, CK2-lite.

Kind of a disappointment.

BTW, one of my favourite things about Claustwitz games is how easy they are to run in Wine.
I have yet to actually play CK2 in Windows.

Hooray for new thread. Lets just hope it doesn't get too confusing.

Also, anyone interested in MP EU3 game?

I have never been able too get into EU3 it just feels messy and too complex. And this comes from someone who spent countless of hours playing EU2 and still go back to it every now and then.

Love EU3. Picked up HoI3 and V2 in the past two Steam sales, but I've yet to try them out. To be honest, I'm kind of annoyed now that I got them. Crusader Kings II looks a lot more up my alley and I feel like I should've waited for that instead.

Not a fan of the more realistic nature of games like Victoria 2?

Magna Mundi spawned from a mod of Europa Universalis 3, right?
I never tried it, but I may give it a go even if I already have troubles finding time slots to give to CK2.

The Magna Mundi mod doesn't support Divine Wind and suffers from a lot of bloat. I wouldn't recommend it anymore.
