Samsung Galaxy S8 · S8+ |OT| - Available April 21, 2017

For about a week I'm having an issue where my s8+ screen will not turn on or it will freeze and I need to do a reboot to get it back on.

Any suggestions? Anyone else have this happen and have a solution?
It has happened to me randomly and the only solution is to restart the device. I've tried to recreate it but so far I have not been able to do it.

Why does he wear the mask!?
It doesn't affect the keyboard. I mean, emoji are app specific. Like you might have 3 different apps with 3 different styles, including the keyboard with its own style.
Ideal thanks

EDIT: Ah I wanted ios emojis for all apps

Man at close range this camera is so f'ing magic.

Oh I'm constantly blown away by the camera on this thing. I'm very serious about the quality of my pictures, and this phone has pretty much replaced my really nice point and shoot. Heck, I hardly even use my DSLR anymore unless it's for something serious, since the photos out of this thing are plenty good enough.

Anyone coming from a 5.5" regular aspect ratio phone? I'm trying to decide if I should replace my Note 2 with an S8 or S8+. I'm kind of split about picking a size.

Yup. You definitely notice how much more narrow the S8 is compared to a regular 5.5" phone. But you also notice how much taller it is. I definitely don't ever feel like the screen is too small.

I went from a Moto X Pure (5.7") to an S8+ and the Galaxy honestly feels smaller due to the aspect ratio and the screen-to-body ratio. I'd say if you like the size of your phone now, get the plus; if you want something smaller, get the standard.

Just ordered the S8+. Expecting it to arrive tomorrow, still not sure about the size between the S8 and S8+. Coming from the S7 Edge the S8 felt a bit small and the S8+ felt a bit too big.
Anyone move from the S7 Edge to S8+, how does the size feel?

Was wondering why my mobile connection was so shit on the s8. Called up support and they couldn't figure out. Called my network provider they were also at a loss.

Considered sending it in for a replacement thinking something was wrong with the phone.

Turns out my connection was limited to 2G haha so much better now I've switched to LTE

Its not too big but the bigger battery really makes a huge difference.

I came from a Note 5. I really prefer the physical home button and the wider aspect, but the taller screen offsets that to some degree.

I think I'd have preferred to wait to upgrade, but the wife wanted to move from her iPhone 6 plus and really liked the S8+, and Tmo/Samsung put them on BOGO.

Overall it's not a huge change. I miss the home button more than the change in screen size bugs me.

There's a targeted promo for T-Mobile in the Samsung Pay app for these phones now.

The catch is that you have to buy it from one of a specific group of stores to qualify. You upload your receipt to Samsung and then they send you rewards points.

You can do each category twice.

S8/S8+: 20K points ($100)
S7 (Not Edge: 40K points ($200)
S8/S8+ AND a J3 Prime at the same time ($250 - you'd still pay for the J3 activation + tax, so it's not totally free)

Presumably, this should stack w/ the BOGO deal w/ an added line they're running, dropping the total cost to $300+activation+tax per line in that case... which is pretty sweet.

I'd really like to know what's causing it. I haven't really installed many apps if at all. I can only think there is something up with a recent update that is causing this.

How do I get this 'Running out of space' notification to stop showing up, there's not an option to turn notifications for it off when I hold like there is for every other notification.

Like I still have almost more than 6 gigs left and even if I didn't it's none of your god damn business if I want to sue the space I paid for so shut the fuck up and get the fuck out of my face you annoying piece of shit god damn.

Holy fuck, almost every one of the hundreds of Samsung QI chargers on eBay is a knock-off.
They haven't even bothered to scan the bloody Samsung logo properly, they've just picked a mildly similar font that actually looks fuck-all like it on closer inspection.

I'm tempted to switch my main bank to something that supports Samsung / Android Pay. It would be so handy but my bank can't keep up with the times...

So... I was entitled to a free Gear VR after buying an S8 and it arrived yesterday. I've set it all up and tried it for the first time today. Obviously, the first thing I did was checking out some VR porn. I mean, who wouldn't, right? It was... pretty cool. I do have a few VR related questions though:

1. Is it possible to change the vertical orientation instead of only horizontal? Sometimes I have to... look way too much down almost breaking my neck.

2. I'm not familiar with the terms, but is it possible to change the orientation of the "hub"? Like, if I want to see the menu, I have to physically move 180 degrees and look behind me, same with browsers. It kinda makes it a pain in the ass (no pun intended) to browse the internet. Can't I just easily and quickly move the menu into a direction I want instead of constantly look behind me?

3. The videos are way too fucking bright. Surely you can change the brightness, but I did a quick search and couldn't find it. Any tips?

welp I got one. Its very slick, but im actually kinda disapointed at the screen size. its bigger than my old note 4 (6.2 vs 5.5) but it actually looks smaller because of the aspect ratio.

going to get some getting used to.

Is there a way for it to not always show the clock on screen, like for the screen to go completely out like any phone? I cant find the option to do it, I thought it was the smart "stay on aslong as youre looking at it" but I turned it off and it still goes to the clock screensver.

its dim but I assume thats wasting battery.

Look for Always-On Display. It can be disabled.

you can recalibrate so that the middle of the menu is where you are looking 'forward' but other than that, nope. if there are a lot of options, you have to turn near 180 degrees.

i use a swiveling chair.

+1. I came from a OnePlus One and the screen felt ever-so-slightly smaller despite there being more visible screen estate. Adjusted within a week or so.

If a similar promotion was available, I'd have gone with the S8+ - but I'm still happy with the S8.

Depending on the video app you use, you can change the tilt and the zoom so you can sit or lay down, however this won't change the home menu. You can access brightness settings by holding down the home button.

Finally made a pick and went with the S8+ :D super excited!

I also got with it the 256 sd card. Just looking now for some recommendations on a screen protector and a good case.

Any thoughts you guys?

So weird.. The S8 at work has got a new update that includes what seems to be a full fledged Bixby. Meanwhile my own S8 is still stuck on the previous version. Why?

I get so many compliments on the official S-View Flip Cover. Obviously you have to be willing to flip it open every time you use it, but I feel pretty secure knowing it has a hefty cover on the screen at all times, plus the info the screen can show and interaction available for music players is handy.

Just got the bixby update and I have to say......I am very impressed.

It's early, but I really like it.

The best part about it seems to be the enhanced depth of commands you can give.

For instance if I say:
"open YouTube and search for xy"

Bixby will take me to the channel or list of whatever I asked for. Google assistant will take me to the channel of "the open" for some reason.

You can go super deep into Samsung's own apps though. You can ask to make recent photos into an album. You can rename albums. You can delete pictures taken in a specified time frame.

If I ask Bixby to take a selfie, it will open the camera, switch to selfie cam, set a timer and take the pic. Google assistant will ask me which app I want to use. If I ask Google to open the camera app and take a selfie, it will tell me there is no app installed.

If you ask Bixby to show pictures from last week, it will literally search your gallery for "last week pictures". Google assistant will show random pics from Google image search. If you specify to open gallery first, it will do a Google troubleshooting search.

If you ask Bixby to play x music artist (I use Google music) it will open the play music app and you can see the app go through every step of the process.

Opens the app, searches the artist, opens their profile, starts radio playlist.

Never seen a voice assistant do that before. Like you're watching the assistant actually do what you want, rather than the usual waiting animation followed by the result.

Also, the walkie talkie type activation of holding the bixby button till you finished your command is probably the best way of activating and using a voice assistant I've used in terms of reliability

You can also hold down the bixby button any time the keyboard is onscreen to dictate instead of typing. I typed this sentence using Bixby's dictation.

I already love it and it seems like it has a huge amount of potential and aims to be a much more effective assistant than Google's own.

To be fair Bixby is already by far a better assistant than Google assistant........seriously. You might think I'm taking the piss but try a couple things like the above I described. Bixby is miles ahead.

If there's something you can do with your finger in a supported app, you can ask Bixby to do it. For instance opening Bixby in full screen over the internet browser gives you tips from disabling content blockers, to adding pages to the home screen, to showing auto fill data, to changing text size, to searching for a keyword within your bookmarks and opening that page.

If there's a thing that can be done, Bixby can do that thing.

Imo, the bixby button is now justified.

Can't wait till it's fully fledged.

Awesome. That's the one I went with. Seemed to be pretty sturdy and keep the phone safe. I'm excited to get it in the mail later this week along the ad card.

So far, loving the phone. Looks so good. It's so light and olive the crystal clear display.

why is AT&T the only carrier that doesn't have good deals on an S8 (that does not require a new line activation) ?

I feel like I missed out on the initial deals : [

Mine finally came through too. I've only had a quick play but from the looks of it, it's great for phone specific stuff like "Open gallery and show me photos I took in 2015" while Google Assistant will still be used for stuff like "What's the quickest route home?".

Not blown away but it's nice to have.

As i get more comfortable with the phone. Is there a good wiki or something on things to turn off or enable on the phone? Or things that i should look into as far as apps go? I guess mostly settings and things that are important to be aware of with the phone. Win10 had a nice wiki on things to be careful with.

Anyone got tips on taking pictures with this phone? I feel like im not doing the camera justice.

I am loving this camera.

Not sure if I am doing it justice, but i am sure trying.

My Bixby update actually managed to result in the button doing nothing an not accidentally triggering all the time. For a few minutes I was living the dream.

Then I rebooted and it finished installation.

So...bixby... would you consider it an alternative to Google Assistant or they can live together? Another info: using bixby also add some "spam" function? Before I disabled it with all the relative functions (except for Bixby Vision) I was receiving some notification about settings alarm or something else - just don't remember - before to go to sleep and something else.

Yeah Google still wins in the understanding of context and of course providing info to the user.

I guess Bixby seems to be better for when you want to do something, vs Google being better for when you want to know something.

Also used Bixby as an alarm clock for the first time today. Instead of an "alarm tone/ringer" Bixby audibly told me what the time was and began telling me the weather forecast and about the latest news. I really liked that.

I've had the S8 for a few weeks now and have been loving it. It was a substantial step up from my S5. Love how crisp everything looks thanks to the high resolution display. Camera also takes really great looking pictures and video. Beastly phone.

After several months, I overall really like this phone, but I HATE the screen being curved. It requires a tempered glass screen protector and makes it really hard to install.
