Android TV [OT] This is not Google TV, It is here to stay

I got a Shield TV. It's cool. I'm working on removing all of the garbage so that it's not garbage-filled. Right now, the Android TV screensaver (Daydream) activates after a few minutes. That's fine--but how do I remove the text ads for other Google products like Chromecast that appear on Daydream? I don't want any ads for anything on my system, if I wanted a Chromecast I'd buy one.

Finally got Marshmallow on my X850C, late as fuck but i'll take it.

What's new compared to 5.0?

I find the 930d has a surprisingly small number of apps in the store. Your usual streaming apps and a few others but nothing fantastic. Should I be looking at sideloading, or am I missing some gems?

Anyone tried moonlight to stream from PC to android TV?

It's supposedly faster, and not a gen-1 OS anymore (less buggy, etc.). New consumer-facing features-wise, it's not too exciting. Not sure about any new APIs that may be of interest to developers.

Is there any way to tell the Netflix app to save a profile and automatically select that one, so as to skip the intermediate step of selecting a profile every time I launch the app?

Also, is there any way to force the Apps row on the main screen to use a grid with multiple rows instead of a single row with carousel scrolling?

I managed to turn off the stupid GeForce Garbage Apps row (which inexplicably included Netflix) by disabling the notifications for the Nvidia Customizations app, but now I can't run the PC game streaming app at all, because ???

I'll probably end up turning off Daydream since I really can't find anyway online to disable the stupid Chromecast ads even though I spent way more than a Chromecast to buy a device that's capable of way more than a Chromecast. Totally baffling decision.

Wish you could tun off 'recommended apps' on Sony android TV. Inexplicably it is in prime location, with your actual apps that you want and have installed below it, off the screen

Don't think so.

It's probably nvidia's android tv customization.

Yea there used to be a way to give a bit of control but since google changed the google cast app to Home, some of those features seem to have gone away. It's annoying, hopefully they will be back.

Well...that was interesting. Amazon and Netflix 4k/HDR officially supported, as well as a Steam-link client and lots of Google Assistant integration. And at $199.

Pretty jazzed about that overall, though we still have no idea whether there's any internal hardware changes. finally will buy one.

Is it a legit Steam Link client, or their game stream locked to Nvidia thing still?

EDIT: Just looked and The Verge is reporting it's an official Steam Link app. Sweet.

Last year's version already does 4k hdr, so only new things seem like software update. I'm confused. I wonder if they are going to gimp the 2016 version.

Well they said all the new features would come in a OS update.

Seems like the only difference is a different remote and different ports on the pro. Hard to tell till Nvidia updates their own web page.

Seems like there are same number of ports on the pro as mine. Maybe they are removing ports on the regular version?

Seems like they removed SD card and micro-usb ports. And the ir-receiver.

Pre-ordered one anyway, I can live without those.

Well my shield tv hdd died two nights ago. Took me the whole evening to replace it and get it booting again. It's annoying that Nvidia didn't make the replacement process easier by supplying the necessary software but I'm glad that it's doable.

So just what did you need to do? Surprised there isn't just a ISO on the website that you could boot from or something.

Someone on XDA has released a couple files you need to write to the hdd for the system to boot. The hdd can't be different size from what I've tried and you need Linux for the dd tool.

Once the system is able to start up there is no real good instruction that worked for me. Everything I tried it was stuck in boot loop. I ended up booting into Fastboot mode, flash it with nvidia's recovery image, format user data directory (takes two hours on a mechanical drive) and cache directory then it was able to boot into the OS.

Got my Shield. It really is much smaller than I imagined. Really having trouble getting it to pass through lossless audio soundtracks though. Maybe this is just issues surrounding the new os updates.

Anyone elses TV's been turning themselves on randomly? It's so fucking annoying. I think it's the FandangoNow app.

So an app has appeared on my TV called TV Software Update that talks about Marshmallow. There's no update available though and the "how to install" says it'll be available from the xxth of February.

Thanks Sony!

I'm not sure where to ask but does the Xbox one or duelshock 4 controller not work on the shield tv ? Searches I've done say a update allowed this but I can't get either to the duelshock 4 disconnects immediately after being paired. And the Xbox one just doesn't connect at all

No comment on the DS4, but do you have the newer XB1 controller with Bluetooth? That's the one that works. You also need to update the controller firmware on XB1 or Windows 10.

Well...the arm update to Youtube for AndroidTV has appeared on apkmirror, so I guess it will get passed on normally soon.

Not a whole lot to say...its just the same UI design as other TV devices, like the PS4. Can't say I'm a fan. It seems way to busy to me. I preferred the earlier UI. It had less going on. It reminds me a bit of the busyness that the new kodi UI has (I don't like that either),

Wonder if it will change again once the new AndroidTV UI gets pushed, that was shown at IO this year.

In any case on the Shield at least its still snappier than the PS4 app.

That's the new updated UI? I thought it would be something better. Ya not a fan of it.

Yeah. I really kind of wish platforms like youtube would make UIs that are more specialised for the platform than just one for TV screens, one for tablets and one for phones.

Though Youtube is still dragging its feet on AppleTV...it feels like its made by Apple and is just made like a generic AppleTV app.
