Probably, yeah. I know for sure it spoils a few worlds and there's something in X you should really play DDD if you want to understand it.
Watching the Back Cover movie included in 2.8 is just a complement to Unchained's story, not a substitute. It's not like the re:coded and 402x7 Days movies which were just an adaptation for the original game's plot.
BC is supposed to cover the things that happen behind our backs in Unchained, and like some of us are theorizing based on Unchained/Chi's plot (I won't spoil what the games are about), it could result in a pretty interesting situation.
TL;DR: Play Unchained X and when 2.8 releases, watch the movie.

It's much like other less important spin-offs, especially Chain of Memories. You've got worlds with storylines you've already seen 7 times in the franchise already and then one world (Daybreak Town) where the meat of the story happens at times.

I guess it should be stated that both the original [chi] and Unchained plots are still developing and not quite finished yet and that should still hold true with the NA release. And you're perfectly fine to start Unchained and play without certain knowledge gleamed from Dream Drop Distance, but eventually things will come to a head and that knowledge will help the player understand some of the plot stuff going on in Unchained.
what if we're waiting for 2.8 to play DDD? Should I wait for DDD, play unchained X, then watch back cover or is it cool to just play unchained x without DDD.

I think it's one of the fairest I've ever played in Japan now, every 18 days, you can do a 10-pull from log-ins alone. I think it took like 2 months or so to implement it though. Also. I think anything can eventually become the highest ranked equip too.
Someone could correct me, but I don't think Unchained spoils anything from DDD. There are a few connections, but every KH game connects to eachother with subtle hints. As of now, we still haven't reached the climax in Chi's story, so I think you could play this first while you wait for DDD HD.

God dammit I really, really, REALLY hate Squeenix for making me play a gatcha game to get critical plot shit for KHIII.
It's hardly critical, at least so far. Nothing that a 3 minute summary in KHIII or on Youtube won't fix, at least.

Funny thing is they've had the name of the english translator in the Japanese credits since Unchained came out in Japan.

Which means they were probably sitting on this game. Like they are with FFIX PC, but hopefully they'll just drop that game randomly too. Hopefully sometime this or next week

It was just an explanation why we haven't seen all that much of him. FFXV is out of his hands and KHIII & FFVII Remake are still ways off from being released, so there's no reason for him to really be all that actively involved in SQEX PR for now.There's been new content released for this since its Japanese release. They've probably just waited until it's a bit meatier rather than release it when it's still just half complete.

Well looks like I'll be playing this on my work breaks.
Considering that this is coming off the back of a massive patch and a ten hour maintenance session, both of which changed the way the game plays (AGAIN), I think they were more likely working out the final gameplay than anything. Game is completely different than 1.0 and all the better for it.
Asked in the community thread, so I'll ask here:
Are there any questions you have about the game? I've been playing [chi] and UX since each was launched, so I'm fairly familiar with them both.
