as cool as this is i can't get past that after 20 years the game is available behind an $80 paywall. i'll bite the bullet if supply issues are ironed out this time but thats a stretch

My condolences sir.

I would like to see any titles released by NOE but not NOA get released. Devil World, Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland, ect.

I would also like to see Nintendo release some of the Satellaview games.

Finally, while the 3DS still breaths, release some Virtual Boy games on the VC service.

We'll probably see this as a "premium" release on the Switch VC.

So what can we expect in this official/finalized release that weren't in the leaked rom?

$80 might be worth it for this game alone.

Sorry for your loss, OP. Glad for you that this is coming out.

Hopefully Fay and Miyu become a part of any future SF games now. Lynx are really cool.

But how? Every amateur-hour SNES emulator out there has Super FX working flawlessly. How could Nintendo have problems with this?
I was under the belief that it had to do with patents or rights or something regarding the Super FX chip/code and not actually problems emulating, but I don't remember fully.

Is it perhaps a patent expiring on the Super FX chip? Not entirely sure how it works. Maybe someone is getting a cut somewhere.

I hope there's an Iwata Asks-style interview for this game when the SNES Classic is closer to release. There's definitely a lot to the story of the game's cancellation that we don't know about. I don't buy Miyamoto's reasoning that they wanted to differentiate the SNES from the N64. There has to be more to it than that.

Never in a million years did I expect Star Fox 2 to see an official release. What a pleasant surprise. Also I completely forgot that there were two new characters in this.

Boy I can't wait for the proper introduction of two new female characters for the internet to draw never ending amounts of furry porn for. Krystal's got her work cut out for her now.

I want Star Fox 2 but I could do without the above

The SNES classic is very likely to be way more powerful than a SNES. I wonder if that means they'll do anything to up the IQ or FPS in Star Fox 2 or if they'll release it like it would've been back in the day.

I wouldn't say that SuperFX/ SuperFX2 is flawless at all for most of the SNES emulators out there. One of the biggest problems I see in most SNES emulators is that the timing is usually wrong and games run too fast. It is really noticeable when you look at the intro or ending of the original Star Fox and the cinematic cut-scenes finish before the music tracks end. The only SNES emulator that gets the timing right is BSNES or Higan.

Speculation, I think Cuthbert said he couldn't think of any rights issues once as well. No one knows why they haven't yet.

Great.

I hope there'll be enough interest for Star Fox 2 and then Nintendo decides to make a proper Star Fox game for Switch and they give a proper treatment after how badly they handled the franchise with busts like Adventures, Assault, Command and Zero.

I just want Dino Crisis to come back

Also condolences to the OPs loss. Even if it's something he's coped with now.

It will be at least somewhat. The rom was actually unfinished and unplayable until hackers fixed it.

Dylan Cuthbert (OG developer of StarFox) said that the completed rom existed in Nintendo, and I think he said the rom that was out there wasn't the full thing.

I don't expect a lot of different content at all. But just having the real thing, not needing to be hacked to play, will be worth it.

Not true, it was completable but it was very much a developer build, complete with level selects and performance metrics on screen. All the hackers did was house the debug options and create a proper opening screen. Well, and create an English translation.

That's not too knock the hackers work, their final project polished it to a near complete release! But the official complete version should be fun to see.

#1: every amateur hour snes emulator is literally just using Snes9x source code, and the superfx emulation took a good couple years to get that good... So don't just knock it randomly.

#2: it's very likely that a feature complete, correctly timed, and fully optimized to run on low power hardware version of the code did take a long time. Especially since it was likely a low priority investment. Only a few games used the chip, and it was likely financially not worth the effort.

I do. Maybe that wasn't the best way of phrasing it but the idea that Star Fox 2 wouldn't sell next to N64 3D graphics makes sense to me, the visuals were a huge part of the appeal for the first game back in the day, and Nintendo probably wanted to put as much marketing focus on the N64 as possible at the time.

Command is no bust. Parts of SF2 will be quite command-esque, in fact. Plus the multitude of ridiculous anime endings were charming af

I can't believe Star Fox 2 never released. The excuse given is absolutely ridiculous.

Now that we know Star Fox 2 was fully mastered, QA'd, and ready to be shipped, the excuse is even weaker. It truely is a shame what Nintendo did to this game, because myself and millions of others would have had a blast with it back in 1995.

Let's not forget that in 1995 the ps1 was already released... Trying to sell Starfox 2 next to sony wouldn't have been a great look either.

I think people are being way to nostalgic... The game would have been a tough sell at $80usd (the price of most high end snes games at the time that used special chips).

This was completely unexpected, good on Nintendo for releasing the game even if it's a little late.
I will keep dreaming for Megan Legends 3.

Here's a task for you cool game journalists out there - find out who the hell is the person that cares about old shit at Nintendo.

Because Starfox 2 isn't just some normal thing. Earthbound 0 isn't some normal thing. This is not something Nintendo would normally do.

Miyamoto's not running around going "You know what? Find that old data tape with a copy of Starfox 2 on it & put it on the SNES Mini". Reggie's not going "You know what would be cool? Let's find that 25 year old ROM of Mother 1 and release it for shits and giggles"

One of us, one of us dumb idiots who knows too much about secret Nintendo history, got themselves inside and came to power. And they've somehow used that power to crawl through data tapes & somehow convince old executives to release them. Madness!

In the same way Sonic Mania is made from crazy people who've cared way too much about this stuff, Nintendo has a secret idiot too. Let us find them and worship their madness. Praise be them for all eternity.

Sooo... will Nintendo be paying some royalties to the former developers of the game? Or will they be a dick to them ... just like always.

Yeah this is great. Good on them for making it happen as well. It probably wasn't easy but I think getting this stuff out there is well worth the effort

I hate to be a debbie downer, but Starfox 2 is not a good game. Miyamoto knew, that's why they didnt release it.

I wonder if this is a different product than the leaked one. Heck, it'd be funny if it was a rom they downloaded on the internet, like for Super Mario Bros on VC.:"""")

Ive also beaten the infinished rom of star fox 2. Im wondering how much is fixed in the official version.

The Linx and the the dog should have been characters in new star fox games. I thought they were going to do something cool with the time dimension portals in zero, things like visiting different planets of different games, including star fox 2. Alas, it was only a 64 remake, even if I liked that game thats probably my biggest pet peeve with it.

Also my condolences for what happened to your brother :(

If this person exists, he should start pushing F-Zero there lol

It has nothing to do with the quality. They didn't release it because it was a SNES 3D game releasing near N64 and a year after PSX.
It's also quite good, based on the not complete prototype available online.

Hindsight is 20/20. They never knew the N(U)64 was going to be delayed, and SF64 also gave us the Rumble Pak.

Im sorry for your loss OP.

My first game in the series was Star Fox 64 and it really helped me when i was a kid during a very sensible moment when i was facing serious health problems. Ever since then it is one of my favorites series.

I never knew SF2 existed, i was surprised when it was announced

They also didnt like it internally, and I agree..its a far worse game than the excellent original. Do you really think they'll change much from the leaked version? I certainly dont. This is just an exercise in novelty, although I dont blame them for it.

Could someone explain why the FX chip stuff would have prevented StarFox 2 from being released. I know the chip we designed by Argonaught or something.

There are very few games (that we know of) that got that close to completion/release but were withheld for some weird reason. Most of the huge omissions are unlocalized stuff, like mother 3 or Seiken 3.

I'm having a hard time thinking of any more 'impossible' games releasing. like - maybe what was cobbled together at the beginnings of half-life 3? I dunno.

Finished/all but finished games that were unreleased? There have been several over the years, nothing to my knowledge that was as big as star fox 2.

Argonaut's relationship with Nintendo wasn't the best after Nintendo cancelled this and refused to let them make a Yoshi game for N64 that ended up becoming Croc.

Feelings were hurt, I guess, and Nintendo wasn't about to pay for the chip's rights. I imagine either Nintendo got the rights to the chip, since Argonaut was liquidated, or it has just been so long ago that the patent expired.
