I've restarted Vesperia twice and stopped playing at around the 70% mark each time. I'm working my way through Graces f right now and having a great time, hopefully I'll be able to beat it before Xillia come out.

I haven't played the recent Innocence or Hearts remakes to judge them. >_>
I've had Innocence R around here for quite some time and I still haven't gotten around to it since I've been playing Zero no Kiseki Evo and a few other things.

I ordered Tales of Hearts R because I had some points expiring on a site and got it discounted. I do have a feeling that I'm going to regret the purchase, though. I didn't like the demo at all. It sucked the heart out of Hearts.

I believe there's an interview that states that he has to stick to this style.

That being said, his work in Xillia 1/2 is pretty decent. I also liked his Rebirth OST even if the battle themes sound like something out of his work in Mario Golf/Tennis.

Yeah I tend to wait until there's no chance of a game coming out here before importing them from japan so haven't played xillia 1 or 2 yet but I certainly wouldn't be opposed to liking his work on tales of more again.

I wouldn't even say his work on more recent Tales of is all that bad, I have just heard so much of it over the years in the exact same style that its no longer interesting and all kinds of blends in together. Well except for Graces, that soundtrack ended up being something I would actually consider bad.

I didn't get around to Vesperia until after Graces f and really felt like I was forcing myself to finish near the end because I wasn't enjoying the battles too much. Hell, once I got to post game content I did as much as I could without fighting anything, and once it came to the bonus dungeon and coliseum I just stopped playing lol.

Symphonia was my first in the series and while I loved it back then, I always felt it took a bit of a downturn in the second half. My sisters still love it to death, but I'm more neutral about it.

Played Innocence and didn't really care for the way the plot was put together, though I do like the idea in concept of having a section of the game focus on each character.

Quite liked Abyss for the most part, though it has it's pointless parts that irritated me and also has a point about 60% through where the plot just drags.

Own Vesperia, but haven't played it yet. Didn't get a 360 until about a year and a half ago and held out hope for the PS3 version. Then I realized the truth and just bought the 360 version. I mean to get to it at some point, but I can't say when.

Haven't finished Graces f, though looking at a walkthrough I'm pretty much about done with the main plot aside from all the usual side stuff that comes up in the last part of the game. I burned myself out after grinding in an area trying to create a perfect gem for Asbel, which I nearly did.

Looking forward to Xillia. Have the CE reserved and everything.

I still want my Hearts though. Give it to me NB. Destiny would be nice too.

Despite wishing these games had turn based mechanics, I still enjoy them anyway. Symphonia was the first one that I played but I never ended up completing it. May go back to it someday. I was really impressed with the characters and localization of Vesperia (8-4 shoutout!) and am similarly impressed with Graces F so far (about 5 hours in).

I've been addicted to Animal Crossing New Leaf and Fire Emblem Awakening (Lunatic mode ahoy~) so that's why I haven't bothered importing them yet, even if Innocence R is pretty cheap now.

Tales of Phantasia: Narikiri Dungeon on GBC was actually turn based! I enjoyed it even if it was really limited. Of course, it wasn't localized though. :p

I suppose you could just put it on Auto and put commands on shortcuts? I dunno, being a fighting game fan as well, the battle system in this series appeals to me.

A Tales community thread! I am apart of too many JRPG community thread, but alas, I cannot ignore a Tales of thread.

My favorite Tales of game is Abyss. Suck it haters!

I can't wait to see people begging for PS3 Tales of Vespira.

Subbed.

Symphonia was my first Tales game and probably cemented me as a Tales fan. The only other games I've played are Abyss and Graces F. Looking forward to XIllia.

I actually quite liked the FOFs in Abyss. It was another way my brother and I could coordinate when we played.

Subbed! I love Tales games. Well, most of them, anyways. Heck, I even found some enjoyment out of DotNW. Strangely, I didn't like Abyss all that much. Most likely due to Luke being such an annoying d-bag. Maybe I'll give it another try with the 3DS port.

Finally, a Tales community thread. :) Nice job.

My first Tales game was Phantasia.

My favorites are Destiny, Abyss, Vesperia.

The only Tales music I can even remember anything of, is all from Destiny. With this series, everything else just kinda blurs together for me.

I remember finding ToA difficult when I first played it alone.

When I did a secondary playthrough with a friend, I had a complete blast with the game (my chum also loved it).

Innocence R is budget now so it wouldn't be too bad to invest in it whenever possible. The demo was enough to convince me to give it a whirl since it seems much better than the original version of Innocence. It's just too bad that Hearts R doesn't seem to follow suit. (Have fun with Lunatic mode; I know I did.)

Funny that you talked about the fighting genre when I completely suck at fighters. For some reason I'm halfway decent at Tales, so I guess it's an easier way for me to learn how to chain longer combos better even if it doesn't involve that many buttons nor does it involve a fightstick. And I could do it at higher difficulties, which is a plus. I guess I just like the flow in terms of it being a faster-paced think-on-your-feet Action RPG. Even if the rest of the game could be considered a junk food RPG by some.

Strangely, I didn't like Abyss all that much.
That isn't strange; I don't like Abyss much either, and I don't think disliking Abyss is a rare opinion on GAF in general from what I've seen.

Does Sakuraba even compose a lot of the tracks now or does he only do a select few each game?
Regardless of the OSTs not being too unique for each game, I can't imagine him creating songs for so many games year after year.

I think Vesperia is really good at making special encounters like boss fights fun, but the normal encounters get stale quick. My problem is that there's too many damage sponges in Vesperia and they don't have a particularly diverse collection of attacks, so a lot of the fights end up being way too long relative to how difficult they actually are.

Most Graces enemies don't have much HP or it's easy to burn through it quickly, so it keeps the pace moving pretty well.

I liked Xillia's soundtrack, but Xillia 2 is much worse imo, the battle themes were all pretty bad. Legendia's soundtrack is still easily the best in the series, I don't care much for the battle themes but the cities/dungeons/events themes were very nice.

I hope Go Shiina will work on another Mothership Title one day.

+1 to this.

Go Shiina is one of my favourite VG composers. His work in God Eater is especially good.

Having him compose the sound track for the next big Tales of game would be a breath of fresh air imo.

Tamura/Aoyama/whatever he'd like to call himself used to co-compose up until Graces/Narikiri Dungeon X.

The reason why Xillia/Xillia 2's soundtracks are more consistent is because Sakuraba did those soundtracks solo.

He has been co-composing every Tales until Xillia and Xillia 2 (Tempest was the only exception). He's better alone but not that much imo.

Edit: Beaten.

Yeah, just finished Lunatic mode on FE:A, but trying to grind up for the Apothesis DLC. Since it doesn't change by difficulty I could just restart on Normal but I'm stubborn. Grinding for Limit Breakers is pretty annoying though.

I loved Abyss and it was my favorite when it first came out but it aged pretty badly. The music isn't too great outside of the Bump of Chicken contributions (Karma, Meaning of Birth, Tear's song), and the pacing is awful...even worse if you're on the PS2 version without an HD loader. Loading times are slow. However, it still has the best cameo battle in the series. I don't feel it's a bad game, but there's really no reason to play it unless you're just wanting to go through all the games. Vesperia really does most things better.

Well, I didn't like FFXIII either, so... :p

But back on topic, I am of course looking forward to playing Xillia. The last trailer they showed was actually pretty well done. I was pretty surprised by how much I enjoy some of the VA's. Need to go back and pick out the ones I liked.

Awesome thread :)

I've already played these games

-Tales of Phantasia (SNES)
-Tales of Phantasia (GBA)
-Tales of Phantasia (PSX)
-Tales of Eternia (PSP)
-Tales of the Abyss (PS2)
-Tales of Legendia (PS2)
-Tales of Symphonia (GCN)

I'm currently playing Tales of Symphonia on the GCN (am about 20+ hours into it) - will get the HD remake sometime after its release.

I also ordered Tales of Graces F few days ago and will be getting it in the mail soon - cant wait :D.

Thanks. That clears up a lot. Xillia games (while not the greatest), were pretty decent and consistent with their soundtracks.
Graces was probably the lowest point for me. Mad Dance and surprisingly the snow port song were the only ones I enjoyed.

If it weren't for the battle system and some fun skits, I would've ranked Graces a lot lower in terms of overall game.

I have arrived, sorry to keep you all waiting
i kid, I kid >_>

Anyway, this will be nice to have.

I beat Tales of Destiny 2 (FINALLY) and Innocence R earlier this year, and I'm going to try and beat the English release of Xillia. I'm just not very hyped because I beat it in Japanese already. For this reason, I'm abandoning my ToX2 playthrough despite owning it, in hopes that if/when it is localized, I will enjoy it more.

Recently imported Narikiri Dungeon 2 (still in the mail) because I have all motherships, so I need to start getting the escorts.

What Tales are you all playing this year?

FoFs are seriously so fun. Fatal Strikes from Vesperia too. I wish we'd get a 3D Tales with Fatal Strikes, FoFs, Link Artes, and Unison Attacks. With aerial combat and balanced free run. /pipedream

Probably Xillia 2, English Xillia, the Symphonia PS3 remake, and Destiny remake.

this is the best theme in any tales game you guys

What Tales are you all playing this year?
I have so much on my plate this year just because of a few things that happened a few months ago up until last. Haha.

But hopefully I'll finish off Xillia 2, Innocence R, and Hearts R. Everything else I've played. I was thinking of importing the Tales of Symphonia LaLaBit pack, but every time I look at that thing--despite loving the Ufotable art--I flinch at the price. But I think I'm going to import Symphonia HD with Sen no Kiseki as my import games this year. I usually import a Tales game every year anyway.

I haven't read this whole thread but is tales of xillia worth 60 dollars? I remember reading impressions on how it was lacking in content and I hate how the last half of abyss was mostly backtracking.

Sakuraba has definitely gone downhill. I loved his earlier works like Valkyrie Profile and a few other odd tracks, but I'm finding the music he composes recently to get more and more forgettable. Maybe he's burned out with too much work or something

Come on, that Tales of Graces cave music was OVERFLOWING with originality, and completely memorable.

in a terribly monotonous way. The biggest crime is that someone was paid for that.

It's a good game. Just the ending just kinda...ends, but I suppose it's better than feeling like a direct-to-DVD sequel like most Tales' endgames. Not much optional content either. But it's worth it.

why

Here guys, here's a remix of Fighting of the Spirit instead:

The bad pacing, mediocre music, plot with a bunch of random jargon, and the cast being fairly unlikable to most people is why it would be. :p

I guess I just didn't mind any of that.

I haven't read this whole thread but is tales of xillia worth 60 dollars? I remember reading impressions on how it was lacking in content and I hate how the last half of abyss was mostly backtracking.

Lacking in content? Not so much.

It's just some of the stuff in the game could have been developed more but it is still an enjoyable game. Until you play through it twice in a row and you get sick of all of it.

The actual combat in the full version of Hearts R is pretty blah which made slogging through the game a bit of a chore though I'm happy I did since it and Innoncence were the two mainline Tales title I had previously missed.

Yep Go Shiina is great, hopefully someday they'll ask him to work on another Tales game. Tales of Legendia has the best OST, too bad that I really didn't like too much everything else.

Something similar happened with Graces F, it has undoubtably the best battle system of the series, and that alone can support the whole game, it's just really fun to play.
But IMO it has boring dungeons, boring sidequest, the story is bad and it has one of the worst if not the worst cast in recent Tales games, the only character I don't hate from that game is probably Pascal.

I'm more interested in how Tempest R is going to turn out, since that one pretty much has to be massively overhauled compared to the other two, and in this instance I'm pretty sure making it worse than the original is an impossibility.

But at the very least when it comes to new characters for that I expect them to be somewhat lazy and reused the new characters from Innocence/Hearts R... Also, I hope if that jrpgvita campaign did make Namco reconsider, I'd kind of hope they just skip over Innocence and Hearts right to Tempest so they don't have to play catch-up again now that they're just getting there for consoles.

does it have a traditional worldmap? I don't mind point and clicks, prefer standard maps, hate the kind of overworld ToG had.

Are the dungeons puzzle heavy? are they lengthy? another thing I disliked about graces was that the puzzles were designed for 3 year olds and most dungeons lasted 10-20 minutes.

I've only played one Tales game so far this year. Graces f. The combat was excellent and probably my favorite in the entire series. There were a few characters I liked (Pascal and Malik were by far my favorites). Story was pretty forgettable.

Hm. That's pretty disappointing to hear. I was thinking while playing through the demo that the life and excitement during combat was just gone because of what they chose to do with it. I'll see when I play it, but I'm keeping my expectations very low.

I'm more interested in how Tempest R is going to turn out, since that one pretty much has to be massively overhauled compared to the other two, and in this instance I'm pretty sure making it worse than the original is an impossibility.
If they don't let Dimps near Tempest R in any way, that would be great.

Lacking in content for an anniversary game, probably. What you generally hear is that it lacks content from previous Tales games like cameo battles, sidequests borne from Tales traditions, etc.

It's fairly short, though. It's certainly worth your time just because Xillia demonstrates the next step up in terms of cutscene direction for Tales. Much better animation and blocking during cutscenes. Combat is quickly-paced despite bosses having issues that they've had since Hearts. People should give it a chance regardless. Just expect the final act of the game to be rather... short. The game has a lot of potential, but it doesn't live up to a lot of it in the end. That's all.

Until you play through it twice in a row and you get sick of all of it.
And don't play through it four times like I did. Oy.

I think i'll support Tales of in America when they release the HD tos1/2 ports.
