Steam Summer Sale '17 Hidden Gems & Under-The-Radar Recommendations thread

Wuppo - $5.99/£4.39/5.99€

header.jpg

One of the surprises so far. I found this game from Wok's algorithm to find hidden gems (I think) in the monthly Steam thread and it looked cool but I forgot to put on my wishlist, when the sale started I was browsing the discovery queue and it appeared again so I decided to buy for discounted price and because I found the artstyle quite charming.

It's a platformer/metroidvania/whateverdefinition where you paly as that cute rounded thing who is a Wum. The game already starts strong with a fun dialogue where you can take two routes with being a cool Wum or just a jerk to the NPC and it was funny. The lore so far feels rich and I'm curious to discover more about this world.

I strongly recommend it
Got a link for that?

Beat Ass Creed Rogue. It was uninspiring.

Shay kind of turned into a douche by the end.
The ending choice is hilarious. Join or get shot in the face.
Second straight game where the narrative went nowhere.
There are maybe 2 or 3 likable characters.
Seemed shorter than the others.
Finished in 11 hours. 1 of those was the ending credits.

Will get Unity when it is cheaper.

EDIT - Wrong Steam thread sorry.

2. Higurashi When They Cry: A bit back I remember that work was being done to include the voice acting from the PS2 version, in addition to other mods. Did that ever get released?

2. Nope, doesn't have VA.

It actually has through modding and it's a great work, you can find it here, easy to patch: https://github.com/07th-mod

Lets you use PS2 sprites too, which are not amazing but at least on par with the MG ones, but enables the CGs which is always a welcome addition.

Not sure were they mentioned but i would like to recommend both GO games:

Lara Croft GO (-66%, 3.39€)
header.jpg

Hitman GO Definitive Edition (-75%, 1.99€)
header.jpg

I love them both. And have them on iOS, Android, PC...
They are great puzzle games and Lara Croft GO recently received The Mirror of Spirits expansion for free. These 2 are very cheap and must buy imo.

Just bought the Hitman GO Definitive Edition.

I loved it on iOS and been wanting to get it for PC for a while, great deal now for it :)

Unexplored is the best roguelite procedurally generated dungeon crawler I've played. It evokes those late 80's basement-made action adventure games, but has leaderboards for weekly and daily dungeons. It considers the entire dungeon in generation and not just floor-by-floor simulation. There's a build up to your descent down that can instill a sense of foreboding and dread and a hint of preparation on your part that no other dungeon crawler has provided me with.

It also has movement/positional combat that makes the terrain and visibility matter in an engaging way.

Some great and hugely underappreciated adventures (especially the first one):

Candle. Beautiful andean flavoured adventure that’s rooted in the best of Sierra and Lucasarts’ tradition with a pinch of Flashback thrown in.
http://store.steampowered.com/app/420060/Candle/ 7,49€ (50% off)

The Way. A sci-fi action adventure in the spirit of Lucasart’s The Dig, with gameplay closest to Flashback or Another World but with better puzzles than either.
http://store.steampowered.com/app/311010/The_Way/ 6,74€ (55% off)

The Eyes of Ara. This Myst-like is a relentless onslaught of puzzles compared to the more measured pace of Obduction. It keeps getting better and better as you go, a rarity with adventure games.
http://store.steampowered.com/app/454250/The_Eyes_of_Ara/ 9,75€ (35% off)

Thank you for recommending The Way...looks exactly like my type of game. I loved Flashback and this looks similar.

Bought Hollow Knight and Salt and Sanctuary so far. Already have Valdis Story and Ys. Don't care for roguelikes/ lites. Are there are any cheap kind of old-style sidescrolling/ isometric action games I should look at?

They Bleed Pixels

Any indie/AA games with a proper story and good gameplay? Aka not a rogue like, not visual novel and not fighting game esque gauntlets.

Gunpoint, it's a stealth puzzle platformer with a funny noir story

I need some point & click recommendations. my wife mainly plays P &C or platformers. She has all of the big name point and clicks likes.

Dropsy
The Fall
Contradiction - Spot The Liar!
Lumino City
The Journey Down Chapters One and Two
Her Story

I usually love the "metroidvania" games, but I did not like Hollow Knight much at all. It just didn't grab me, and I felt like the areas were too large.

Here's a little write-up if you want a more substantial response.

Just get it. It's amazing.

Apparently it's the best thing ever.

Thank you all for the opinions! Is there a chance it could get a bigger price drop?

A couple people already posted asking about drpgs --- I answered one post already, and so did someone else, but I remembered another one [going through my wishlist, haven't played it yet] called 7 Mages. Mixed reviews but cheap at 3.50. I'm waiting for a lower price, but figured I'd mention it.

EDIT: also Crystal Rift (mixed reviews)

(going through my 200+ wishlist, finding ones i put on there while I'm at it).

Detailed lists of steam games ranked with a couple different weightings based on reviews and how few people bought them.

The starting price was already insane (it took me 38 hours to beat, and although I got the good ending I didn't defeat all the optional bosses.) It's the best metroidvania on steam.

This is a repost (from last year) but the Umihara Kawase games I list have become more cheaper now.

header.jpg

Sayonara Umihara Kawase - is 70% off so it costs $4.49

http://store.steampowered.com/app/378750/

It is a physics-based puzzle-platformer which is all gameplay, no story. There are 60 stages in total, the game can have a very steep learning curve for you to learn techniques and for how to find a solution to a stage.

That is why I provide a Physics Guide linked here: http://m.neogaf.com/showthread.php?t=1298029
so that it can help people to finish the game so that they may want to try previous entries in the series hence:

header_586x192.jpg

http://store.steampowered.com/sub/85452/

There is a Trilogy of the series available to buy on Steam. It is 70% off so it costs $8.99

This comes with the original Umihara Kawase which released on SNES, Umihara Kawase Shun: Steam Edition which is based off the PlayStation game and then Sayonara Umihara Kawase if you hadn't already bought that.

You have the option of buying all 3 games separately if you happened to already own one of them.

Legend has it when a franchise ends up on Vita, the female protagonist will get her breasts enlarged.

How is House of the Dying Sun? Worth 10 bucks or should I hold off? I'm not lacking for other games to play.

I'm wondering if the game is as simple as it appears in terms of mission structure, or whether it has interesting variety.

What's the consensus on hollow knight?

Literally heard nothing but pure drooling over how good it is in here. I honestly had no interest but I'm going to buy it now.

It's a long shot, but are there any lesser known raising sims on Steam? I'm a big fan of Long Live the Queen and the Princess Maker series. I'm fine with dating sim elements.

As for recommendations, Eidolon is only $3.00 right now. It's a narrative exploration game with light survival elements.

whgQ4ka.jpg

While it isn't particularly gameplay heavy, it isn't just a walking simulator; you can hunt, fish, gather food, and carry out other basic survival tasks. However, the real appeal of this game lies in the atmosphere. It's relaxing and mysterious at the same time. It isn't for everyone, but at this price, it's definitely worth checking out.

So as a self-proclaimed horror enthusiast, I'm going to post two things

Thank you for these lists! You have killer taste. If you have more recommendations, I'd love to see them.

I bought it a few weeks ago when it was on sale, and really enjoyed it. Mission stricture is simple (attack X or escort and defend Y), but I love the premise of it all. The controls are a bit arcadey but feels good. I think the sound design is the best thing. Hearing the radio chatter, the sound of lasers shooting, and your own breathing in the cockpit are really immersive. The campaign is not very long and be you should be able to complete it in 4-5 hours. There is an endless mode, however, so it's good for jumping in on a daily or weekly basis.

Cool, thanks. Sounds like a nice little game.

This is epically thread-worthy. Just checking a few from the top I see (alongside GAF darlings like Fata Morgana and Stens;Gate) a tower defense game... in VR where the entire game takes place in a virtual table and you lay down the towers by hand.

I pretty much never make new threads as a general rule but someone 100% needs to make one about it. More_Baddass, pleaaase?

I thought about making a thread about it when Wok posted but I was in my workplace trying to get things done :p. I think it may be a good idea to contact M_B and Wok to make an in-depth thread.

By itself, the campaign is short, but each difficulty level remixes the stage with more and harder enemies, forcing you to devise different strategies and use the tactical fleet command effectively.

Usually you want to escape before the capital ship arrives, but every stage also has a dreadnaught bonus challenge if you can take down the vessel. Each vessel has a unique captain and escort fleet, so that battle is practically a new mission on its own.

If you had to pick between RCR: Underground and Mother Russia Bleeds which one would you pick?

I'm torn between the two. Whichever one works better with local multiplayer would have a point in its favor.

I'm in a gaming drought right now, and I have no idea what I want to play.I've been primarily into sim racing the past couple of years, so a lot of games have slipped past. So I'll just toss out some games/features I admire , and maybe someone can give me a random suggestion.

Love XCOM EU/2/Long War(1+2), but no knowledge of other tactical turn based games.
FTL...though any rogue likes/lites I've looked into are typically real time or combat heavy.
Kerbal Space Program
Cities Skylines
Stellaris
Banished
Deus Ex/HR/MD
Dark Souls 1/2/3
Hitman
The biggest issue I have finding games is that I absolutely loathe crafting. So games like subnautica or Rimworld, which initially pique my interest as an idea, quickly fall on its face when I realize it's crafting heavy.

I know it's a broad request, but I need something to play, and I've been getting really burnt out of racing lately.

Maybe Invisible Inc.? It's a turn based stealth roguelike, which seems to fit, since you've enjoyed Hitman, Deus Ex, and FTL.

Some other games to maybe take a peek at:

Immersive Sims, ala Deus Ex
Dishonored
Dishonored 2
Prey

The Surge - A souls clone. It's quite a bit jankier than the Souls games, and is really brutal in ways that can sometimes feel unfair, but I think it has a lot going for it.
