So this is how the infection starts.

Marlins have released Aaron Rowand. He was on a minor league deal. Austin Kearns (also on a minor league deal) is projected to be the Marlins backup outfielder.

Rowand is owed $12 million this season by the Giants in the final year of his 5-year, $60 million deal signed in December 2007. Any team that signs him and places him on their 25-man roster would only have to pay him $0.4 million.

A former high school classmate of Carl Pavano has been accused of trying to extort money and a luxury SUV from the Minnesota Twins pitcher.

Christian Bedard, 36, of Southington, Conn., was "attempting to extort monetary funds for his fabricated, false information" and that he believes he can hold the Pavano family "hostage" with the information.

Bedard told the Record-Journal of Meriden, Conn., which first reported the story, that he had an "emotional and physical relationship" with Pavano for three years while they were in high school. The affidavit says that he threatened to reveal the alleged relationship and to write a book about it unless Pavano apologized to him and bought him a navy Range Rover with tan leather.

The joint venture between the ownership group led by Magic Johnson and soon-to-be former Los Angeles Dodgers owner Frank McCourt for land around Dodger Stadium will not allow McCourt to reap any profits from parking revenue, according to three sources with knowledge of the situation.

The new ownership group, which entered into a $2.15 billion deal to purchase the Dodgers on Tuesday night, has control over the parking lots and land around the stadium. McCourt, the sources said, is only in line to see future profit from the land if it is developed in the future. However, according to two sources, there is no plan for development in the near future.

In other words, when Dodger fans park their cars at Dodger Stadium, all of that money will go back to the team, not McCourt.

"Frank's not involved in the team, baseball, any of that," Mark Walter, CEO of Guggenheim Partners (who will become the controlling owner of the Dodgers once it is final and baseball's owners officially approve it), told ESPNLosAngeles.com on Wednesday.

"What Frank does have is an economic interest in land, but we control the parking and all the fan experience and that's of the utmost importance to us," Walter said.

The new ownership group paid McCourt $150 million for the land around Dodger Stadium, which contains the parking lots, and the right to control it. McCourt also received a share valued at $150 million to retain some of the land rights, but those rights are controlled by the new ownership group.

The land around the stadium was not part of the initial sale offering because it was held by one of McCourt's companies that did not seek bankruptcy protection.

Abreu is gonna be traded to the Indians, it seems. What's up with the Indians trading for other teams' bad players? At least they didn't aim for Vernon Wells.

Nah, that'd make too much sense. All signs point to a somewhat-bounce-backier year. He hit .218 but still ended up with 25 bombs, so..

He hit .253. Additionally, his OPS has declined 3 straight years now and he's 38. Do the Indians seriously think they have a chance?

Edit: Just realized you're talking about the corpse of Vernon Wells.
