Yakuza Community Thread - FEEL THE HEAT!

I've been playing Kiwami and coming straight off 0 I'm wondering if new fans of the series are going to enjoy it as much.

You can really tell Kiwami is a remake. From the boss characters regaining health during battle to the cutscenes it feels kinda old. 0 is way easier too, Kiwami isn't hard but the enemies are way more spongy.

I'm still enjoying it and the extra Nishiki scenes are worth it overall but even with the remake it shows it's age I feel. It's been a long while since I played the original though so maybe I'm forgetting a bunch of bad stuff, but I feel like there could have been more QOL improvements.

The bolded is a new addition to Kiwami, it was never present in the original game. Make sure you buy the 3 combat upgrades (one for each style) that gives you a special heat move that is exclusively used for those moments - you'll break them out of their healing phase and deal decent damage to them. But until you unlock them, just grab a weapon and use its heat move instead (it also snaps them out of the healing state).
I've issues with that particular addition in Kiwami. Its not explained perfectly in the tutorial since you have the moves unlocked initially, then your depowered and have to unlock the moves again... this causes problems for a couple of early bosses since I'm fairly certain its impossible to have the heat moves unlocked before a certain point (basically impossible to get enough XP to unlock them at the beginning of the game) so unless you know what your doing you'll probably be annoyed that the boss is cheating and getting health back.

I did like the difficulty upgrade though, not sure if you've played the older games in the series (pre Yakuza 4) but originally they were harder, then the difficulty dropped considerably in 4 and its taken a few sequels for them to sort of correct that. Its still a bit too easy for my liking (I don't equip any defensive gear for an added challenge for example) but its a step in the right direction for me.

Huh what a strange addition. I've played the series ever since the first was released in the west and recently started playing them in Japanese. I'll have to keep an eye out for those heat actions you mentioned.

I'm not sure if they were unwilling to change the game majorly or what but I so far 0 has felt better and so has the presentation.

Cutscenes so far in Kiwami are weirdly brief and rather simple. Probably because the first games story isn't incredibly complicated though. Limitations of remaking an older game I guess.

Yeah, its a bizarre addition that never really needed adding. The heat moves themselves look awesome though so its not all bad. One more thing to mention about them (and this is why you need to purchase the heat move for each style) is that when the boss is stunned and starts healing he will have a coloured aura around him, The colour of the aura dictates which style's heat move he's susceptible to.

The cutscene issue is because for 99% of the game its a straight 1:1 copy from the original PS2 cutscenes, same camera angles, poses etc. Most of the cutscenes were in engine as well (as opposed to FMV), so they were quite limited on what they do.
The only scene that has been extended from the PS2 version is Majima's first appearance, I believe that all ties back into the Majima Anywhere system.

All these praises for #3 on the previous page and I'm tempted to replay it. It was my first Yakuza so I found the start incredibly slow at the time but now I've played a few more games and learnt the characters it will seem like a new game, especially as I haven't played it since 2010.

The dev talks about this several times. It's on purpose.

I like the contrast between the tense ending of 2 and the calm intro of 3. I love the Okinawa part.

I adore 3 because its opening and all the sweet scenes with the kids feel like rewards you gained for Kiryu as a player by enduring the hardships in 1 and 2. It also makes the more dramatic scenes extremely powerful and effective.

People call the opening slow and a slog, but I genuinely enjoyed every moment, and seeing Kiryu be happy for a while was priceless.

I'm going to assume we aren't crazy lucky and the 12/17 is the JP release date, right? Sega will be marketing 6 in NA at this point...

If love to read about that! Do you have any articles or links?

Kiwami 2 being real is a dream come true. My favourite story for sure

Im finding it hard to fathom everything that has to be done to get platinum in dead souls. I already played through the game once on normal, now I am doing a 100% run on dead souls(then after I will have to do premium). So far I am still on Akiyama and just finished his 15th substory. There are a ton of mechanics I still dont fully understand. The hostess stuff and subterranean floors seems like a complete slog right now. I need to just focus on one thing at a time, i'll probably go do casino games....I read Pachinko wizard is a nightmare.
And also, is the snipe gauge supposed to go extremely fast on dead souls? I dont even have time to think when the QTE comes up, let alone press the correct button. Its so fast, it was fine on normal. I doubt I will be able to do Majimas heat sniping trophy just because I physically cant do it that fast. This is an overwhelming game. I feel like the others were quite easily manageable

I wonder if 3, 4 & 5 will get any sort of treatment this generation cos at this rate it'll be worth keeping the PS4 forever to show the kids and grandkids an epic story across 7 games.

It's gonna be a real trip playing that substory in Kiwami 2.

You know the one I'm talking about.

You know.

Whoa whoa whoa whoa WHOA

I just realized.

Kiwami 2 means.... Osaka in the Dragon Engine. Osaka with alleys and rooftops and shit!

oh man i am down for all the things

i seriously doubt it, myself - getting 3 on PSN alone would be good for me, at least people have a shot at the whole series (well, those that didn't trade in their triple i guess)

I just realized.

Which means the next sequel in the series will feature Osaka as well. I just hope it's not some truncated shit like Y6 did with Kamurocho.

I really hope you can jump to the river and swim in it.

Oh damn, that one... That's certainly going to be very funny to see!

Makes me wonder what'll get added to Yakuza 2. I'm looking at the arcade here, I really hope for more, new Sega games that weren't in 6. Also makes me wonder if the arcade game that was present will get a face lift or get replaced?

My biggest interest though is with the dragon engine and map itself. In 2 the fighting arena was a pivotal point in the game, so that HAS to be in, so they can't cut the map like they did in 6. But then there is Osaka, and that map was bigger in 2 compared to any other game that has used it since.
Then there is the combat, 2 added a shit ton of heat moves over the first game, so I really hope they follow the same stance in Kiwami 2.

Very good news all round though. I love the engine in 6 but it was definitely rough round the edges. But getting a refined version, for Yakuza 2 no less? Imagining all those classic scenes played out... I'm drooling already! Also kinda saw this coming for December (think I mentioned it in this thread a page or two back?) as Sega love to do this - a remake/remaster for a quicker release, then announce a full sequel that is still a year out. So now I need to finish 0 100%, do Kiwami then import Kiwami 2. Guess that Shenmue 1&2 replay will not be getting done this December!

So I think for tomorrow a sequel will also get announced, in the same way we got Kiwami and 6 announced a couple of years back plus maybe a new game unrelated to the Yakuza series.

I think the remasters of 3-5 will probably happen next year? Like with the Kiwami games we get them December 2018 while the next big sequel goes for a 2019 date? But I do see the series all getting released on the PS4 eventually.

OK, I will start my second play through of Kiwami this weekend. Hopefully, I can finish the game before K2 is out.

If love to read about that! Do you have any articles or links?

I'm sorry, I'm not kind enough to search for the articles. I think you can find some videos on youtube. The dev (mostly Yokoyama, he is a main producer of the series) talks about it in many places such as the official RGG channel, famitsu, TGS stage event etc during the pre kiwami launch period (fall 2015).

Just imagining Ryuji Goda with the visual fidelity of Yakuza 6 man oh my god this is gonna actually be the Game of the Generation.

Yakuza 2 probably had the best use of cast members. Everyone was vital, no one was a jobber, everyone shone like a bright star in the sky.

And Goda still surpassed all of then ;: ^)

Trust me, you won't be let down. Also, you already met him in Yakuza 0 in two substories, one for Majima and one for Kiryu. you actually fight against him as Majima.

Oh shit, I didn't know he was in 0. I'll have to do those substories then.

EDIT: Just googled him and he's apparently 9 years old in 0? So does that mean Majima beats up a 9 year old?

More like a 9 year old has a legitimate shot at beating up Majima.

So yeah, you can imagine the shit him as an adult gets up to.

That was the moment where I knew this was one of those series where I could close my eyes, give them my money and know that I'm going to get a FUN and unique game regardless of how good it might be.

put this quote on the box, segas - DIAPER MINIQUEST SELLS SYSTEMS
