Just realizing that all the games I've been playing over the past couple months have been these big sprawling rpgs, and while they've been awesome, it's just getting lonely dang it. I need co-op goodness and a more relaxed atmosphere.
I always find myself getting lonely in single player games, especially RPGs. It just feels kind of pointless after a while. I never have this problem with online games, like GW1.

Edit: Bleh. I need to just respond to posts as they happen instead of waiting for a few to build up and answering them in these long-ass posts. But I hate scrolling through a page and seeing myself every third post...

Quick, someone post something they dislike about the game. This unanimous high praise is starting to scare me.

Cantha and Elonia aren't in it yet. I threw my wife for a loop yesterday, she was looking at maps that show the scale of the world and how large it is and I linked her to the full Guild Wars map. Guess we don't have to wonder where the expansions take us, huh?

Okay, that wasn't really something I dislike. If I had to pick something, I guess it's that there's no Spears or Halberd weapons. As someone who's kind of obsessed with history and such, it's a constant irritation to see games overlook pole-based weapons with their superior reach and historical role in favor of flashy weapons like Greatswords and Mauls. I'm hoping an expansion adds them later.

Wait....what? I don't think I heard about [Terraria shutting down]. Hadn't played in a while after the big update a while back. This sucks...

Yeah, Redigit posted about it a few weeks back, just after Starbound was announced. He basically said Terraria is dead because he wants to focus on his family and get better at programming and game design. Personally, I think he stumbled upon a game he wasn't prepared to support and is bailing out, but that's probably just sour Gamer Grapes.

I want to see those pix!

They're in the link I posted earlier, here; http://vgplayers.station.sony.com/characters.vm?characterId=73014579265

Media > Automatic Screenshots. Not much to see, the game automatically took screenshots when you leveled so they weren't staged and I was usually pulled way out to keep an eye open for adds. My wife was playing a Blood Mage which is... just too awesome to describe, but was a caster class, so I needed to be on point to intercept respawns all the time.

I haven't found any information on it but there wont be guild halls on release, correct?

One of the devs said that player housing and guild halls are two things that won't be available at launch, but are something they are working on. Can't find the exact quote, but I would imagine that with the Home Instance (which isn't very customizable housing, as near as I can tell) that actual housing wouldn't be out of the question. Guild Halls will probably be instanced as well.

Will there be PVP versions of skills in GW2? Can't remember if that's been mentioned or not.

Last I heard, only parts of skills are changed, such as the duration of conditions like stuns and roots. They've also said that racial skills won't be available in PVP to prevent any single race from having too much of an advantage (we wouldn't want a situation like EVERYONE rolling Undead to get Will of the Forsaken now, would we?)

Appreciate it Retro. I would think that the home instance would be your permanent residence and hopefully will allow you to customize. I also hope Guild Halls will be put in sometime soon after release since the game pretty much encourages cooperation and having a guild hall seems to be the theme for it.

Found an old article at mmorpg.com from PAX 2011;
Guild halls will not be at release, however, the team is planning a robust player housing system and at the time that is introduced into the game, so will guild halls. Guild halls will also be more than just a place for showing off trophies but also a place for players to rest and recover, for guild storage as well as crafting, and there was talk of gathering for specific events and traveling, but no details were forthcoming.(source)

Also take this with a grain of salt, but somebody at the Guru forums claims to have asked Colin Johanson about them at PAX East and was told "something along the lines that Guilds in GW2 will blow out anything else we've seen before."

I don't want to even speculate on what Guild Halls will entail, but they have a lot to live up to if they want to beat Vanguard: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BA4AyGdNPXI&t=1m19s (My guild in Vanguard had a similar castle, you guys really can't appreciate how big these things were).

Everquest 2 also had awesome guild halls. Huge pieces of land and massive keeps in the middle that would crash your computer with all the effects from trophies and such.

is there a GW2 map pic?

I don't see GW2 as a digital download on Amazon. Any reason it would not be a DD title on there?

Probably just not enough information yet. We don't have a release date, info on any kind of Collector's Edition... it's very frustrating because the game looks done, but we know nothing about it except a nebulous 'late march' Beta event.

Agreed. It looked done back at Gamescom when I got to play it but i'm sure that even though the major details are finished, there's probably much smaller ones we haven't noticed that are being tweaked. Perfection in the eyes of Anet.

so in WvW, if someone takes over our guild hall or w/e. does that mean we have to find a new one?

They're not really "yours", you capture them and fly your banner from them, but I don't think you can do anything but defend them or stroke your ego. In the WvW Q&A that Jira kindly copied and pasted into a Google Doc here), the question did come up;

Q: Is there anything in place to allow a guild to take control of a large keep from another guild that is from their own server?

A: Nope, you cannot claim something that another guild has claimed.

That "own server" thing, however, probably means that you can't claim a site that a friendly guild has already captured. Whether the enemy can claim it and kick you out or not, I have no idea (but it seems likely).

Remember though, these are 'Guild Halls' in the usual sense; these are just WvW objectives that you can claim in the name of your guild and fly your banners from for bragging rights. Guild Halls / Housing are a completely different beast and probably won't be something other players can conquer. Then again, it is called Guild Wars.

As much as I want to bitch about the game still not having a solid release date or the next Beta event being an entire month away, I have faith that with all the awesome things ArenaNet has done right so far, they're doing something worth the delay.

Same here. Although I wonder what it will include since they already released an art book. Probably a different art book.

I really hope it'll include some really cool stuff. Maybe some miniatures? Either way, i'm sold and even though I keep throwing my money at the screen when I see GW2 video's, nothing happens. 8(

Don't get me wrong, Shield is awesome too, the skills are very meta and once placed in situations where they go, are strong as hell. 20 players together? roll up and knockback 'em all! EDIT: I wonder if Shield of Absorption absorbs trebuchet hits?

Also watching that Guardian video, when Simon goes down, it reminded me that they're adding it so that you can self-rez if no one is around. So awesome.

I want to kick back in the hall, chat it up with fellow gaffers, show off some shinies, and then go off on awesome adventures together!

Um. Well, they haven't shown off the dances yet, nor mentioned that are 100 other dances available on the cash shop's dance studio for $1/ea?

Oh man. I can't wait to do dungons with gaffers. It's gonna be so dope.

You don't want to run a 10 pet MM build in PvP? Your enemies won't know what the hell to kill first lol.

I can't help but come at it from sort of a practical/comp standpoint. Pets that I can't directly control are pets that my opponents have direct control over in some form. I don't know how important pets are even going to wind up being in PvP though, or if their design is smart enough to valve most of that pressure mechanically. It's very hard to do, but from what I've seen GW2 has probably the most skilled designers ever put to this kind of gameplay, so it's possible they've done so. I'd have to see it that one to really believe it, though.

Still, the more I think about it, the more I want to try the Warrior. Some of this is the TERA Warrior design rubbing off; the Warrior in that game feels awesome to control, full stop. It's probably the first time I've enjoyed a melee role significantly more than a ranged/support archetype. I'll have to give the GW2 version an honest shot to see if they might have captured a similar essence, because if they did I'd run with it and not look back.

Awwwwwww shit I'm gonna have a set of gear just for MF and a parrot:

Superior Rune of the Pirate
  1. +10% magic find
  2. +20% might duration
  3. +15% magic find
  4. 5% chance to shout Yarr and grant might to nearby allies when hit. (cooldown: 10s)
  5. +25% magic find
  6. +5% chance to summon a Parrot. (cooldown: 90s)

There's a magic find stat? Love it. Magic find always seems like an interesting stat because you trade power for the ability to find more stuff which makes the game harder.

Yeah, also the current underdog buff in WvW is a pretty big MF boost to try to help balance the numbers difference by getting more gear faster than the other side. Though they'll probably change this around before we get to play.

This blows. Wasn't aware of this. At least the game is still fun and I can go back to it from time to time and just restart.

Didn't catch this the first time, but this is just awesome. The idea that these things could be everywhere will keep a lot of people exploring. Just think if they did something like this but made the parts in the event very small and easy to miss and you could have past up the start of an event that could bring out something like this.

Along this same note has it ever been talked about if event chains can be spread out? Is it possible to say, complete an event that triggers another event in a different area? For instance you defeat some group of rebels but instead of just trying to attack again they retreat to a different area and start something else. I just think if they could do things like this they could hide some pretty epic things under layers and layers of triggers and event chains.

It's just the feeling of going on an adventure with other people. Sure I enjoy single player games and i'm excited for Mass Effect 3 next week (and the multiplayer actually), but I'm ready to dive back into an MMO. Just a sense of community and joining up for those adventures is something I miss and have great memories from WoW and taking on challenges as a big group.

Same here. Although I wonder what it will include since they already released an art book. Probably a different art book.

- Hardcover Art book (The art in this game is amazingly good).
- Poster-sized world map (bonus points if printed on cloth).
- Pewter miniature (I like having little nick-knacks on my desk)
- Soundtrack CD
- Making of DVD with lots of exclusive interviews, behind-the-scenes stuff during development, etc.
- In game items (exclusive dyes, titles, pets, etc.)
- Free credits towards Cash Shop items or free transmutation stones.

None of those are out of the question, and we're not really delving into the realm of craziness (statuettes, book ends, etc) or cheapness (keychains, wristbands, etc.)

I want to kick back in the hall, chat it up with fellow gaffers, show off some shinies, and then go off on awesome adventures together!

Yeah, despite looking really cool, Vanguard's Guild Halls didn't have a lot to interact with. You could put in braziers and anvils and stuff, but couldn't actually craft at them. I'd rather have static or modular rooms you just plop into existence than giant rooms you can decorate but everything is just for show. Most MMOs treat housing as 'fluff', but I'd love to have the ability to plant gardens (dye seeds, cooking ingredients), set up a workshop for crafting (with different levels of crafting furniture), trophy rooms, etc.

Um. Well, they haven't shown off the dances yet, nor mentioned that are 100 other dances available on the cash shop's dance studio for $1/ea?

Finally given up on Blizzard adding a Dance Studio, huh?

(Ranger skills)

Thanks, my wife will thank you when she sees that.

Do the weapon stats make the weapon skills do more damage?

I would imagine so, otherwise what would be the point?

I'll give you an example of something they have talked about that's similar to what you said.

Say you're at an allied Charr encampment and the Blood Legion is trying to mount an offensive on the allied Charr base. You'll see NPCs start sending out troops to take out the siege weapons the BL have setup, they'll yell at you to go help out with it. If you succeed in taking out the forward encampments, a new event will kick off having you lead a mortar team up to a hillside to shell the main BL base. Though on the way the BL will setup ambushes to stop you. If you make it up there that will kick off an event to try to move into the BL main base. Now if you failed the original movement on the first encampment, the BL will move in and take it over, setup reinforcements and siege weaponry, the waypoint and vendors, etc will be lost. They'll start moving out and setting up bases elsewhere. Though all the while when this is going on, an event on the other side of the map can kick off where there's an escort to that allied Charr camp, so as players are trying to get to the main BL base, other players are working to get that escort to the Charr encampment. Along the way the BL will setup a ambush along with another event triggering a rockslide to get in the way. So you have to fend off the caravan and clear the rockslide. If you fend off the ambush, clear the rockslide, and get the caravan to the Charr encampment, that will allow the soliders who are going out from that camp towards the BL main base to be upgraded and made stronger. Also, it will open up new merchants for players. So all 3 of those events are working in conjunction with each other at 3 different points in the map or CAN, not to say you're guaranteed to see all 3 at once.

Dynamic Event Info

This is actually even more than I thought about. Hopefully it does things like this across different regions or zones as well, not often mind you, just for some crazy hidden things. I'm also hoping there are some easily overlooked event chains. Not really for hidden stuff but maybe for some easter eggs or something.

edit: I could also see things like this bringing a server or guild together. Get a whole group of people and coordinate to start all events at once and get them all to the right point would be some great fun.

I am glad I wasn't really paying attention to this game until this month, so the wait doesn't seem as long for me.

I think they'd do some cross zone/region stuff if it's technically possible. I think that the portals between zones prevents such things from a technical perspective. I think the only reason there's portals between zones is because of the Dynamic Event system, but it's worth it IMO to get away from static questing.

That's what I sort of figured. Hopefully if it's not possible now they might be able to impliment something along these lines later on. I'm sure there is PLENTY they can do without this, would just be a cool addition if it's possible down the road.

We doing build theory? ;) C'mon, give me a target.

I also wanted to state that I picked playing a Guardian before it was cool.

Lies! I picked a guardian when it was taboo! But they look really cool. So many of the classes though have some cool abilities. This is one game where I would really want to try different classes often.

For loot games in general I usually want to play warrior types, knowing the draw of a big weapon with big numbers and just kicking ass via melee, but GW2 is just showing a lot of variety in how classes play out, really interested in Elementalist/Guardian/Necromancer.

Guardians have never been uncool or taboo. Since they were announced i would say they have been the second most popular class behind the elementalist from all the comments and polls etc i've seen across boards, although atm i would probably say the mesmer is getting the most attention mainly because it was only recently announced.

Really? For the most part I would think I've seen a lot of bad attention going to the Mesmer. Most the times I've seen it brought up it seems it's about them looking boring or not at all how they used to be. Although I may be a little biased as I feel sort of similar, but it still seems this is most of the talk I have seen about the Mesmer.

Edit: Reading back, I may have read that wrong...

Blasphemy!

Everyone wanting to join GAFGuild is hereby mandated to find and watch Rome.
It's only two seasons long and it's quite old so you should be able to find it cheap.
After that, there will be no debate over what the guild name should be.
Thirteenth!

I know I'm really late on this but I have to pipe in and agree that Rome was awesome. I support this guild name.

Wow, I just read that. Thanks for the link.

Have we determined how regions will be split? EU/US etc. I don't have time to read the entire backlog of this thread, so was curious as to how a GAF guild would work. Sorry if it's been answered already.

We don't know for sure. I'm going to bet on typical regional based servers, but as always ANet loves to defy conventions and they very well could have a single global server structure like GW1.

To be fair, we've yet to see a single Mesmer play at the full extent of what the class is capable of.

After watching the videos on the Thief class here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fowYqpbBZYI&hd=1

and here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4E3raPxpUo&hd=1

Then watching this PvP video of a Thief vs Mesmer:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OdQe8tiI4wE

I finally decided to make a Thief my main. My main in the original GW was an Assassin, and still is one of my favorite classes in an MMO to date. The mobility that the Thief in GW2 offers just looks amazing, plus I love the ability to just hit from the shadows and slip away again, you can just tell how panicked that Mesmer is wondering where the Thief went.

Also is it just me, or does this game sound (audio) amazing? All the sounds are so pronounced, crisp and clean and spells/hits/attacks really sound spot on in combat.
