Dishonored 2 Game Informer Details

Here's a rough recap of the Game Informer article.

  • Visually the game pretty much looks like a more detailed version of the last game.
  • Before anyone asks, there's no co-op, as they weren't sure how to design that in.
  • The game runs on a modified version of idtech5 they've dubbed The Void Engine.
  • The game takes place 15 years after the original.
  • After the events of the first game, Corvo was concerned that at some point, people would attempt to assassinate Emily. As such, he spent said 15 years training her how to be a magical assassin like him whenever she wasn't too busy being Empress.
  • The game starts out with you playing as Emily during a coup d'etat and having to escape.
  • Afterwards, you choose whether to play as Emily on her quest to reclaim her throne, or as Corvo with the same objective.
  • "When fans found out they could play Dishonored 2 from the perspective of Emily Kaldwin, they were overwhelmingly positive. "The response was stunning for us," Smith says."
  • The game starts and ends in Dunwall, but the rest of the game takes place in Karnaca, which is inspired by Mediterranean European countries and is the birthplace of Corvo. Karnaca is also where the majority of the game takes place.
  • There's a bunch of stuff about their art design process in here. Let's just suffice it to say that if you liked how the first game looked and how the universe was, you should be satisfied here.
  • Anton Sokolov is back.
  • The plot setup for how missions works sounds pretty similar. There's some public figure doing bad things and you get information/help from other characters to help in your goal of taking them down.
  • The guards are a lot smarter this time and can also do things like vault around and scale objects to chase you.
  • Emily has a new set of powers. Far Reach is this giant hand grappling hook thing that pulls you around. It's like blink, except you actually physically move across spaces, so guards can notice you. Far Reach can also be used as a weapon by swinging around environment objects.
  • The game is a lot more vertical so these movement abilities are especially important.
  • You can do non-lethal aerial takedowns.
  • Missions have various options for completion and progression throughout, much like the previous game.
  • You can use guards as human shields.
  • Non-lethal/stealth options have been expanded quite a bit to be more up to par with the amount of lethal options.
  • Another one of Emily's abilities is Mesmerize, which stuns multiple guards temporarily.
  • You can puts guards into beds to avoid suspicion.
  • There's a bunch of difficulty sliders for things like how visible you are in cover.
  • There's quick saving/quick load in all versions of the game now along with checkpoints so you don't risk losing much progress at any given time.
  • Coy non-comment about mods. Please download Bethesda.net™.
  • Another of Emily's powers is Domino. You link up to four guards together, and then whatever happens to one guard, happens to the rest. For example, if you link four guards, and then lead one into a stun mine, all four are stunned.
  • This also works with Doppelganger, where you create a clone of yourself, then link it to the guards, and blow up your own clone.
  • Emily also has the Shadow Walk ability which lets her slink into shadows and squeeze into tight places.
  • Some of the missions have neutral areas where you can go around and talk to the various citizens to get a feel for the city and hints toward your mission.
  • Your base of operations is a boat.
  • Batman Detective Vision returns.
  • Both Emily and Corvo have a pistol, sword, and crossbow, but they look different. Also they have different end game upgrades to the items.
  • Corvo has the same powers as the last game, but they're upgraded and expanded.
  • Corvo is voiced by Garrett from Thief because Harvey and Raf like Thief and this game has obviously ate its lunch.
  • Corvo's Bend Time ability can now also fast forward time.
  • Corvo's possession ability can now be chained between creatures.
  • The abilities now unlock in a tree.
  • Corvo's blink can assassinate someone through a glass window starting at level 1.
  • The mansion from the trailer is an interlocking puzzle level where you pull levers and open new areas and all sorts of stuff like that.
  • The clockwork soldiers are now wood instead of porcelain, though it's nice looking wood.
  • They're trying to make the ending and morality systems less bad this time.

Sounds like expansion of all the good ideas from the first one. I'm super excited.

idTech sucks ass though, but whatever, I enjoyed Wolfenstein nevertheless so I'm sure I can handle this.

All of that sounds awesome and exactly what I want from a game called Dishonored 2. I guess I'll cave and buy the two DLCs for the first game separately on Steam for the same game as the GOTY bundle :-|

Quicksave option for all platforms is a huge plus.

I take it we can still finish the game stealthily, ghost through a level without killing anyone but the main target per mission? at least, I assume that setup is even returning this time around?

Sounds awesome. I guess I didnt realize that the male protagnist was going to be Corvo. For some reason I was under the impression that he becomes the antagonist in the sequel for some reason.

I like the idea of the difficulty sliders and mesmorize sounds a little OP so I might not need to make it easier.

Day 1 for me, would get it for the art/world alone.

They're really good!

Well shit, I guess I'm not playing as Emily haha

Details sound great. I'm especially interested in the new nonlethal abilities.

I think I'm gonna play as Emily for the rest of the game.

This is pretty cool by the way.

Yes.

Hi, I'm nortonff. I spend my life going into threads to say that I don't care about the topic of the thread. It's a really good use of my time.
Makes me wish the Definitive Edition was better so I could beat it before getting this.

Glad people were positive about Emily since that seems like a natural progression for the story to head with her being the pc character and what with the story revolving around her. Hopefully we find out more about her mom.

This is what I wanted to hear.

I really hated how D1 punished players with a bad ending if they didn't play exactly how the devs wanted them to. It was super at odds with the open-ended design.

Harvey had another cool example, in that one of her powers is Doppleganger. So she can create a Doppleganger, link him/her to 3 tough lookin guards in the area with Domino, then kill the Doppleganger which takes out the other 3 as well.

That sounds fucking dope as hell.

No offense to you personally, but this is a big misconception about the first one that drives me crazy to hear.

The only way to get the bad ending is kill QUITE a lot of people. That's it. It doesn't enforce anything on you, in fact you can kill several people every single mission and still be fine. When you factor in the powers and all the environmental stuff you have TONS of options that don't involve killing.

It certainly cuts off some of the tools from being used frequently, but you can absolutely engage in some deadly violence and still be fine.

While I don't think the system is THAT good (certainly a lot of room for improvement and clearer choices) it's not this totally punishing and strict set of guidelines that people seem to think it is.

This sounds really fun.

Afterwards, you choose whether to play as Emily on her quest to reclaim her throne, or as Corvo with the same objective.

Everything sounds great, but this is what I was worried about when they said it would have dual protags. I wanted to see some unique narrative content for each character. I really like Corvo, but this game is obviously more about Emily and his inclusion seems more like a compromise for anyone not into the female protag.

I'm really hoping they've got more in store for Corvo, because I'd be bummed out if they didn't.

I can confirm it at least looks less hideous than idtech5 normally does.

I hope endings arent tied to lethal and non lethal. Lethal had all the fun powers

They still are. It's just that each varies in how much chaos it adds. That's why I said "less bad" instead of "good"!

Definitely starting my first playthrough as Emily to check out the new stuff and the next one with Corvo for some classic Dishonored goodness~ x3

His side story elements seem to revolve more about uncovering and interacting with his past since he grew up here.

But yeah it's pretty clear the main plot here is about Emily.

Dishonored doesn't seem like a terrible fit for idTech, honestly. I assume they modified the engine so it handles open environments a little better.

I don't think we're ever going to see another technical disaster with idtech after TEW. That was very clearly the wrong tool for the game Tango wanted to make and I think Bethesda has learned their lesson from it.

Morrigan Stark

Arrogant Smirk
Awesome. I like everything in that list, basically.

Gonna play Emily for sure.

Edit: what's wrong with idTech 5? Wolfenstein TNO/TOB looked good on PS4 and ran at a perfect 60 FPS. Not every game is badly optimized like The Evil Within. ^^

That said, I dont see where it mentioned it was idtech 5 in the game informer article.

Anything would better over the tech in Dishonored 1 if Im being real

--

One interesting thing from the article not in the OP was how there are neutral zones with a bunch of Karnacan civilians where players can get a better sense of the city. You can interact with citizens and learn about the world, discover secret passages, that kind of thing.

Sooooooooo good. My most anticipated game by far. I still can't believe we're getting a sequel, I never though that would have happened when the first one came out.

I can't believe I've never thought of hiding guards in a bed before. It just makes too much sense for me to have not seen that in a game before.

That said, I dont see where it mentioned it was idtech 5 in the game informer article.

At least it ran at 144FPS unlike any other recent Bethesda game. IDTech5 sounds like a 60FPS lock again like their recent games.
