"lisa, one day you'll go places that people like us can only read about."
"places where my intelligence is an asset and not a liability?"
"yes. and when you're there, you'll miss your brothers antics."

god, what an amazing episode. mr. bergstrom is one of the best guest characters ever.

Dustin Hoffman did a great job, with that character.

Season 9 and earlier Simpsons were great. We have several seasons on DVD and my wife and I regularly watch them instead of mindlessly flipping through television channels.

Simpsons had a lot of pretty great dramatic eps early on--Lisa's Substitute, The Way We Was, When Flanders Failed, I Married Marge, all within the span of about 20 eps.

Ok I had to post this funny one from When Flanders Failed:

Is it the switch to digital that did it, maybe? Or could that....zany charm of the first few seasons be duplicated on a computer if somebody knew what they were doing?

I came into this thread ready to defend new Simpsons but looking at these pics, I do miss the less zaney stories and the charm.

They had much better "one-off" characters in the early episodes.

Karl comes to mind. Hank Scorpio, too.

Frank Grimes was the last decent one-off, then they all turned into wacky caricatures. The worst insult was when Frank Grimes' son showed up. They even changed that country singer girl from one of the early seasons from an interesting character into a lousy one.

Also, the voice acting changed. The actors have established a few stock voices and use them over and over...

I can't find the pic but there was one of Homer holding up the monkey hand making a wish

i'll make a wish that can't backfire.

i wish for a turkey sandwich, on rye bread, with lettuce and mustard, and, and i don't want any zombie turkey, i don't want to turn into a turkey myself, and i don't want any other weird surprises.

you got it?

. . . not bad. nice, hot mustard. *chomp chomp* good bread. turkey's a little dry.

. . . turkey's a little dry?! oh, foe, the cursed teeth! what demon from the depths of hell created thee?!

I don't quite like how in HD episodes (and the movie of course) the outilines are thinner than what they used to be. It just makes it look more like a lazy computer drawing.

I thinks that's because they're using a pen tool and tablet to draw the lines.

The older shows were done using ink pens, which allowed for more human error.

That human error is what gives the drawing a lot of it's subtle charm, in my opinion.

Its not the animation that lost its charm it was the writing. Face it, when Conan left the show it was a steady decline and was unable to recover.

Pretty much.
I don't mind the new animation if the stories were worth telling.

I prefer the old Simpsons episodes but the new animation is much better looking than before. And the new episodes don't suck that much, really. It's still my favorite animated show ever.

Lost all credibility.
I have to admit I watched last night's episode and laughed pretty hard a few times. But yeah the show has lost its past brilliance. For me the show started going down hill when they began to rely too much on celebrity guests, pop culture, and current events which somewhat took away from the past seasons "timeless" quality.

Where are you guys finding these images at?
I googled simpsons and all I seem to find is fanporn and videogame screenshots.

A lot of animation suffers from this though. Digital coloring and obscene computer touchups have taken a lot of personality and soul out of shows. At first it was completely awesome when it started to come in and removed all the imperfections out of things and made shows look a lot more consistent during the late 90's but now its just grating.

It's the same way that CG used to be so impressive in games and movies, now it's fucking everywhere in every scene of everything.

Edit: I just wanted to agree with above; celebrity guests in an animated show 99% of the time turn that episode into an all time worst.

Yeah.

Look what's happened to anime.

The only animation being done by hand in Japan now are from Studio Ghibli and frickin' Sazae-San.

and that 1% is occupied by the guest spots from early simpsons seasons.
