Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game | The Official Thread

Back from Tatooine Open, and fuck me. I was so, so close to reach my highest objective (pass the cut and had a reasonable chance to bring home some shield tokens) that I can't believe how much I fucked it up. I'm happy with my overall performance, but really, fuck me. I was using my Asajj-Emon list (aka The Greek King).

I have to thank you for this list here. I had a friendly game of Xwing yesterday, a mate was going to a local store tournament and wanted to test his list. Given it was short notice I hadn't really prepped a list so I just thought 'lets use that list was on the gaf topic, it's probably good'. What resulted was a 60 minute comedic slaughter where I spent the entire time throwing his T70s onto asteroids, mines and just generally being a complete nightmare for him. One of the cluster mine drops did 5 points of damage alone to a single ship. It was a very enjoyable team, thanks for making me aware of Emon and his bombs.

Love me some illicit upgrades. This seems like a cool addition, but I don't usually have too many issues with ditching illicit so I'm not sure how it would work for me.

Probably far more useful in epic, where his ability is going to have a far greater impact. Still, someone pointed out a gag list with:

Trandoshan Slaver
-Jabba
-Rigged Cargo Chute

Contracted Scout
-Rigged Cargo Chute

Ventress
-Rigged Cargo Chute
-Rigged Cargo Chute

... that's a lot of debris tokens.

He can be useful in standard play if you really build for it. Doubling your uses of Hot-Shot blaster on a Binayre Pirate Z-95, or getting to 0-stop 3 turns in a row on a YV. Heck, even getting more than one use from EMP or burnout slam. I think he will be a fun but not wholly competitive option.

The value of that card increases with each illicit you have in your list. So epic games benefit more from this card. Also, is this the first card to refer to a squad? other cards simply say 'friendly ships' So does this mean team play is affected?

I feel like this card will herald the coming of new illicits and even a scum shuttle of kinds.

I'm placing my bet now, however. Star Wars Celebration, we get the addition of this to Wave 11:
latest

With 3 named pilots, one for each faction:

-
Ezra
for Rebel
- Gar Saxon for Imperial
- Maul for Scum

That will be our new crew carrier

getting to 0-stop 3 turns in a row on a YV..

I absolutely love this idea, put APL on there and you''ll have an effective defence against ships being behind you. They either bump and risk the damage, or fly in front of you and eat a range 1 shot.

Glitterstim all day every day. Talonbane Cobra and I are salivating.

And yeah, I'm sure that Gauntlet fighter will show up in X-Wing now. It looks a little too much like a Mandalorian Fang fighter for my tastes, but maybe in 3D the profile will look sufficiently different.

[edit] Looks like it's about four times longer than an X-Wing (and thus about four times longer than a Fang fighter) so I guess it'll be sufficiently different in that respect. :lol Large-base ship for sure.

Yeah it's technically bigger than the ghost, but not bigger than the YV-666 and given that they scaled that ship down a little it's a safe bet that if it comes to the game, it wont fully be to scale.

Either way, it'll be a bitch to store.

It is certainly one way to solve the "once they're behind your YV it dies" issue.

I really need to get caught up on Rebels. I have not watched any of season 3.

I posted this in the mini wargaming thread a little while ago and I thought I'd share it here:

T-70 X-Wing
Poe Dameron
R5-P9
Autothrusters

T-70 X-Wing
Red Ace
Comm Relay
R2-D2
Integrated Astromech

X-Wing
Garven Dreis
R2-D6
Veteran Instincts
Integrated Astromech

It's a Netlist but I've enjoyed flying it so far. It's 2-0 against the same Striker/Bomber/Punisher list I've played against so I haven't had a chance to play against anything in the meta or otherwise super competitive. But it's fun, I love X-Wings, and token shenanigans keep it interesting. Currently waiting for my brother to ship me my second Firespray-31 so I can run a scum Boba/Kath list.

I had to look up Garven's pilot ability because I couldn't remember it. I'm assuming you are hoping it will synergize with Poe and feed him an extra to spend on regen at the end of the turn?

I've been looking at B-Wings lately after having never flown one and have been wanting to use Keyan Farlander.
It would be Keyan Farlander with the E2 title mod and Inspiring Recruit. Rage will give him two stress for three rerolls, then his ability lets him remove a stress to turn all eyes into hits. That is a classic Farlander I guess, but Inspiring Recruit released recently and helps him out quite a bit. He removes both stress to grant himself the eye-to-hit focus ability, meaning he can Rage every turn. That's a 32pt build and I have been toying with a couple different more expensive builds. One idea is very pricey but it adds FCS, Extra Munitions, and Advanced Proton Torps. Advanced Proton Torps can change 3 blanks to eyes and then you remove a stress from Rage to change those to hits. If you roll five blanks, you use Rage's ability to reroll three of them in hopes of at least getting eyes, and then the Torp ability means you don't have to worry about the other two blanks. Five hits with possible crits if they were rolled naturally in there? Probably not worth the 42 points though but it sounds fun.
I'm not sure what to pair the expensive one with, there isn't much except maybe one large ship. The cheaper version has a tiny bit more that can fit into a list with him though.

I think that may actually be a strong candidate for a potential tournament in May. It was mentioned by the event organizer where I attend OP events that he wants to run an event after the big one next weekend (with over $100 going to the first place winner) where you purchase a small ship in the store and then have to use only it in a match. You fly only your new small ship (no large ships and no "medium" ships like the Punisher, Mist Hunter, or K-Wing), but you can use any upgrade cards from your collection that the ship can equip. I've been running tons of builds for different ships through my head, mainly Imperial builds like a Whisper build or maybe an SF TIE, but that beefed up Farlander, with an extra canon on him just because, might be a hard-hitter with a lot of shields to survive the first shot.

What would you guys use for such an event? A purchase grants you entry, you can only purchase a small-based ship (to exclude the "medium" small-based ships, meaning no $19.99 ships), you can use any cards on it that you already own, and you will fly only that ship. A regen Poe? Standard Fel? TLT Y-Wing with bombs? Whisper? A lone Defender?

Precisely. This lets Poe tank quite a bit if he needs to, but I've also used him to clear pesky Bombs off the board.

So. Few things:

- Norra, Shara and Jess (!) list won Stele open. Watch it here.

- Stele Open top 16 was 13 scum, 2 rebel and 1 imperial. Jumpmasters are still king/queen of the meta.

- Coruscant is this weekend. But there's no news on a stream (again)

- There's an FFG panel today at Celebration. I'm just throwing a reminder out there that I reckon we get a wave extension today.

So my friend knows a guy who has access to a laser cutter and acrylic and he's introduced him to our local store. The next tournament we have is gonna have exclusive custom tokens for players. I'm a little excited as I've heard the designs are super different.

A new card shipment has arrived. The horizontals with the blue HUD are prizes for certain small spanish Vassal tournament I help to host, the rest are for me and to gift. Although this time I didn't go with plastic and went with regular 330g cards... with a 260+ card deck, plastic starts to get a bit expensive :p. Maarek/Farlander and Braylen/Thane are actually dual cards.

EDIT: Oopsie, I left the Warden Squadron pilot out :p

Also, I forgot to reply to this:

I'm really happy to hear that! It actually made my day when I saw it. When gifting my Emon card to my rivals I've been told many times they would play it, but this is the first time I have actually proof I've inspired his use, and that's a victory for me :p

Emon may not be meta, he may not be even great (a non-elite PS6 Firespray? ugh), but he is goddamn FUN.

I'm actually quite terrible on it. Each time I want to do something I'm forced to look for tutorials, and it takes me what I suspect is quite longer than it should. That's why I keep "my" design so clear and simple: I don't want to fuck up things trying to be too much fancy for my own good :p

The worst part is when I decide to repaint the image I chose to match my ship repaints (in the ARCs or Asajj cases) or because is how it should be (Green Squadron). There are a lot of hours and swearing there xD. And, well, finding a good image I like. For some ships is a nightmare (hello ARCs and K-wings).

The blue ones are made by a friend tho, not me. I would break my hands if I try to make something similar.

I have to agree that those custom pilot cards are very nice. I really like the way you've minimise each UI detail so the main ship image really pops and has impact. Norra and the Warden are probably my favourite and I don't even fly rebel.

I found out last week that Strikers are amazing but you have to fly them perfectly or they will just fall to pieces.
Pure Sabaac is a powerhouse but if you do just one move wrong he will just collapse.

Played Armada for the first time tonight. Our game was an objective match without the six-round timer. We ran 400 point squads with no upgrades and it went six hours. My opponent completed his objective and got an extra 100 points but only won by less than 20. It was a close one for sure. My Victory-class, Imperial-class, and Gladiator-class were still alive while my Raider, Fel and three Interceptor squads, Vader, and Howlrunner plus two TIE squads were destroyed. I can't wait to play again. I've already bought a bunch of acrylic tokens, since X-Wing has spoiled me with promo acrylics and I can't go back to cardboard now. Still need to track down some stuff, like acrylic range rulers.

What Old God do I need to display my undying worship towards in order to fly Fenn Rau with any competency that he doesn't just die in a single round every time I play him?

Seriously, a single round, every time!

Ouch that's rough! I generally have success with Fenn in Paratanni, and always fighting ships at range 1 or range 3, and trying to find 1v1 jousts. I say that but then I also manage to be at range 2 in arc of 3 ships more frequently than I should, and then bad things happen.

Looks like someone has screenshotted the movie and then put it through a photoshop filter.
Still, it's nice that they're doing cards without the ships being involved anymore. I felt that really limited the images. It's all well and good seeing the ship they fly but sometimes you just wanna see them do badass poses, ya know?

Store Championship locations finally have been released. I've got five stores in the state doing X-Wing and two doing Armada. Can't wait!

In my city for the last few years, a well known comic book chain hosted the official store championships, but kept the ticket sales secret and only invited people who go to their board game days on a Saturday and asking that they tell no one that it's happening until afterwards. Really annoyed me.

This year, however, the store I go to every month is hosting two!

Can't wait to get the shit kicked out of me by the pros cos I won't commit to a list.

My turn to double post! This weird combined R2-D2/Integrated Astromech card is part of some 40th anniversary kit:

Don't play it with Boba Fett crew or you'll have to rip your card in half when you jettison Integrated Astromech.

That's a neat dual card!

I'm really excited for the next X-Wing and Armada waves, though I was bummed Rogue One's MC75 didn't make it into the list.

Just made top 4 at a 21 player tourney with Norra, Braylen (omg mvp) and Biggs. Was a lot of fun. I only wanted the Tactician card but walked away with the Ello card and a set of custom top 4 templates. Not a bad day.

Also, heads up. Last year on May 4th, FFG announced Heroes of the Resistance. So it's likely we're getting a new announcement this week if we don't get an article today.

Grats! Norra-Braylen-Biggs is a fantastic and quite fun list (although the fun part usually starts once Biggs has died :p). It was my favourite Rebel list for a good chunk of months, until I discovered that I had even more fun with Thane (Finn-Lone Wolf) instead Braylen :p. Still, sometimes I'm tempted to go back to the Stress Baron for some games.

And talking about fun lists, yesterday I discovered what will become my new Imperial fetish list, at least the first two ships:

Omega Specialist — TIE/sf Fighter 25
Wingman 2
Fire-Control System 2
Pattern Analyzer 2
Lightweight Frame 2
Special Ops Training 0
Ship Total: 33

Omega Specialist — TIE/sf Fighter 25
Wingman 2
Fire-Control System 2
Pattern Analyzer 2
Lightweight Frame 2
Special Ops Training 0
Ship Total: 33

The Inquisitor — TIE Advanced Prototype 25
Push the Limit 3
Proton Rockets 3
Autothrusters 2
TIE/v1 1
Ship Total: 34

I used to fly a quad A-wing list with PTL and Wingman (the classic Green Arrow list from the FFG forums), probably the funniest X-wing list I've ever used, but nowadays it lacks punch to do anything in serious games. The /SF couple *has* that punch while keeping the hilarious maneuvering shenanigans to use whatever maneuver you want whenever you want to, including a quite good action economy due FCS and Pattern Analizer.

I'm still not sold on The Inquisitor as the third ship, tho. There are some really good options for those 34 points: x7 named Defender, Vader, a third /sf... Hell, I even used a Shadow Squadron Phantom with Rebel Captive and Lightweight Frame in the first game :p

You can also upgrade the /sf to Quickdraw and Backdraft, but then you only have 28 points for the third ship. Enough for a non-Stealth Omega Leader, a x7 Delta or something like that, but I'm not sure if it's worth. Both /sf at the same PS is a wonderful thing while maneuvering, and you lose some hitting power on the third ship.

I had some fun on Tabletop Day last Saturday. I drove an hour to the closest "good" game store and met some of the area Armada players. The guy who runs the local Armada FB group played two matches with me to help me learn the rules. He was happy that I knew so much about it, because I guess most of his noob-friendly "teaching" matches are with people who know nothing coming into it. I was like "I've played two matches so far, though the guy I play with who tried teaching me created a bunch of house rules and prefers to play larger point matches with less upgrades and more ships, playing without a round limit because he wants to destroy everything, and playing lengthwise down the table, all of which results in like 5 or 6 hour games. But I've read the rulebook and Learn to Play guide a ton of times in the last two weeks, read the FAQ and tourney rules, read a ton of threads on BGG/FFG/Reddit, and read a ton of blog posts doing in-depth write ups of different ships and missions and stuff."
I got thoroughly trounced but I was still really happy to play. I ran an Imperial list first that I found online, not a Worlds winning list or anything but something that looked like it had some synergy that would help me learn some tactics. The second match was a rebel list without any squadrons that the guy had created.

After those matches, I was excited to run a Paratanni list in X-Wing, but I received some texts from home that brought me down a bit and ruined my day, so my head wasn't in it. I was running Fenn Rau, Asajj, and Manaroo. My opponent had Fenn Rau and a Party Bus and completely destroyed me, I don't think I did more than 2 shield damage to Bossk.

In other news, I received my templates from the company in Italy I ordered from and they are absolutely beautiful. I'll take a pic soon. I also managed to get my hands on one of the Hot Co-Pilot custom cards that the Carolina Krayts had made. I'm hoping to run into some of them at some of the upcoming SC and NC store championships.

Played a couple stores yesterday and today, trying to get in mood for the European.

Yesterday I used a new version of the Emon-Asajj list (Homing Missiles and Cargo Chute out, Cluster Missiles and Glitterstim in) as if I have problems with something is fat big ships, Finished 2-1, losing against a Fat Rey + Jan, with the former left at 2 hull after a gazillion attacks, 5 Cluster Mines tokens and a Cluster Missile. Welp :p. 9th of 30 something.

Today I decided to bring out the ARCs as it has been a while since last time and I want to use them in the Hangar Bay. Again 2-1, losing against Lorenzo's Kanan-Biggs, the list that lost Tatooine's final (and kicked my ass in the swiss). It has been quite close tho. 3rd of 16.

Anyone have Nete's Emon/Boba list handy, or know what page it's on? Or Nete, are you around? I kind of want to give it a try tomorrow.

The last version I played (that's it, the one I used in the Regionals season) was this:

Boba Fett (Scum) — Firespray-31 39
Adaptability 0
4-LOM 1
Homing Missiles 5
Glitterstim 2
Extra Munitions 2
Guidance Chips 0
Slave I 0
Ship Total: 49

Emon Azzameen — Firespray-31 36
Cluster Mines 4
Dengar 3
Glitterstim 2
Cluster Mines 4
Seismic Charges 2
Andrasta 0
Ship Total: 51

Nowadays I would switch Emon's Glitterstim for an Scavenger Crane, which could lead to a possible change of one the Cluster Mines for a Conner... but I really like Clusters (especially when I don't have Sabine :p). Or, maybe, I would go with a balanced Emon (that's it, missile+bomb+Slave 1+ammo) but that would require an entirely different Boba. Or even Kath with an HLC buid.

Cool deal, thanks. I'll give that list a try as is, I remember someone posting and saying they tried it and had fun with it. Except I decided last night "I'll try out Nete's dual Firespray list tomorrow!" Then today someone posts in the local FB group that a dual Firespray list is doing really well at worlds and taking everyone by surprise. I was like "No! Now people will see me set down to Firesprays and think 'Ah, there goes Nick net-listing again...'" lol

The "I tried it and it was fun" was with my Emon-Asajj list tho :p

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=232751669&postcount=2051

Not that the Emon-Boba isn't fun. It just has less shenanigans as they doesn't have the same PS and the lack of tractor beam/free stress.
Oh, damn. Well I'll try the Emon-Boba, since that was what I had in mind. I've only flown a Firespray once, so it would be nice to try it. I did copy down an Asaaj-Kath list from earlier in the thread that I saw while looking for your list; I think it was a list you faced though, when flying your ARC list? I'd have to find the post again, might have been someone else.

So Nete, your list got me 4th place today. That's out of 7 though. I know I didn't fly it anywhere near as good as you do. I've only flown a Firespray once, an Imperial Kath a long time ago. Luckily I've gotten a ton of bomb experience out of Miranda recently, so Emon's tactics weren't new to me. The tournament format was a 3 round tourney, with a free Palp for every person. So every participant had a free Palpatine (or "Ackbar" for Rebels or "Jabba" for Scum, that acted the exact same as Palp) to use on every round, it was just auto-included into everyone's list at no point cost.

Round 1: I faced a guy that I've faced many times, who was flying a list I've flown against many times (and have yet to beat that list). The list was a naked Seinar Test Pilot (TIE Advanced Prototype) and four Tempest Squadron Pilots (TIE Advanced) all with the title and accuracy correctors. He flies the Advanceds in a box formation and frequantly takes evades, so he has four ships each throwing two hits every round at you, and three green dice with an evade on each. Very frustrating, because if your green dice aren't with you, you'll eat shots every round. And my green dice weren't with me. Boba put a hurt on the TAP and killed him but then mistakenly flew off the board. I got too deep into the corner and was scared that a 3K would take me out (we measured after, it would have for sure) so I did a hard 2. The corner of my base just barely overlapped and that meant dead Boba. It went to time and the final score was 74-16, my loss.

Round 2: Round two was against a Sabine Shadowcaster and 2 generic Protectorates (I think they were Concord Dawn Aces, maybe). I didn't get too many bombs off but a set of clusters took the Protectorates down to almost no hull while they were pounding Boba. They finally got Boba down to half health and secured half points on him when they both got finished off.mafter that I tried to hunt down Sabine while keeping Boba alive. It went to time, 100-24 me.

Round 3: Round three was against a guy flying a Falcon, who won with a Falcon at the tourney I organized a few weeks back. This list was different than that one though, he was flying a 49 point tank-y Resistance Sympathizer Falcon (with Chewie crew, old MF title, C-3PO, and Shield Upgrade) and a 51 point fat-as-hell Regen Poe with PtL, Advanced Proton Torps, and a few other upgrades. The game started off a lot slower than the other two, since I played really aggressive in the first two right off the bat. I took things slow and tried to line up some bombs with Emon. I couldn't get in good position and kept getting really poor attack rolls as well, and just wasn't putting any damage into anyone. I'd get one damage a round on Poe and he'd regen it. I finally got Boba into a poor position behind Emon where I couldn't drop anything on Poe. Finally I decided to focus on the Falcon and try to get points. Boba got taken down to half points towards the end of the hour and I did the math on the Falcon and realized that if I could get half points on it and kept Boba alive, I'd win. His Falcon was 50 points, which would net me 25, and Boba was 49, so 24 points would go to him. Time was going to get called, so I turned Boba towards the edge used 4-LOM on the Falcon's evade, since I didn't have to worry about the next turn. I managed to get the damage I needed without Boba dying (since the Falcon took an evade every turn, his attacks were all unmodified and not doing much damage). Went to time, 25-24 modified win for me.

So fourth place was mine. The guy who out the tourney together bought a bunch of Star Wars Funko Pops on sale as prizes (a Sabine, a Boba, a TIE Pilot which I really wanted and didn't get, and I think Bib Fortuna maybe?), as well as some mint in card actions figures (Thrawn, Palpatine, a Black Series Vader), and some other cool stuff. Another guy donated some acrylic tokens and range rulers, as well as three of the old Scimitar Squadron alt-art Bomber cards. I didn't get the TIE Pilot Funko Pop figure I wanted; the guy who organized it wanted it and placed second. So I got the Episode 1 "Darth Sidious" action figure, which came with a loose Royal Guard figure he picked up at a flea market, a Boba Fett pin, and one of the Scimitar Squadron alt-arts. All in all, it was a fun day.

Things I screwed up: I forgot to use Dengar for half of the first match. Didn't use the HLC at all with Emon all day, since I was trying to get bombs out my rear arc and wasn't lining up front shots. Kept getting Boba behind Emon in the last match in spots that I wanted to bomb. And the big one, I didn't was Boba's ability at all until the third match despite having plenty of opportunities to. The guy I flew against in the second match flies Boba a lot and said at the end "You know what I'm surprised you didn't do?" and tapped the Boba card. I smacked my forehead and said "Oh man, he DOES have an ability, doesn't he? What the hell is it? I didn't even look before we started and forgot he even had one!" That was a big "Duh" moment for me.

HLC? What HLC? You mean Glitterstim? :p If so, yeah, that happened ot me a lot during the Regionals, where I had to chose between the drugs or placing a Cluster mine at somebody's head next turn. It's the main reason I would change it for Scavenger Crane.

On forgetting to use Dengar or Boba's ability... welcome to the club XD. I mean, I probably missed Barcelona's Top because I forget I had goddamn Finn in the first game for almost an hour. And don't get me started with all the missed Glitterstim uses on Asajj and others...

Still, a 2-1 the first time you fly a double Firespray (and one being Emon) is really good. Congrats!
