I see talk about people wanting to rebuild NeoGAF. Presuming this is true, it seem wise to have a backup plan. In my mind it feels like the current infrastructure could disappear some day, with no notice. All that's needed is for the bills to not be paid. Having the forums here actually helped those who left to get organized and migrate to the other site.

Most here I'm sure intend to stay until the lights go out. That is quite fine, it's what I'd do. Presuming people want to stick together after such an event, is there something like a GAF Discord channel? Basically, a centralized place people can quickly go to. If people want a forum, what options are out there?

Some things to think about.

None that I'm aware of. (could you, perhaps, start one? I'm new to Discord)

Disabling ad blocker might reduce the chances of an unfortunate scenario

You could take that position with any service, website, media or just about anything else. All it takes is bills not to be paid and it is over. That would seem a poor way to go about things, having a backup plan for every conceivable point of failure around you is impossible.

Years ago in my younger days when being made redundant from a company I'd spent a long time with, the exec asked me what it would take to keep me onboard and be relocated. I replied that all I really need is certainty that my job is safe and permanent, and he replied saying that he can't give that, and nor can any other company. He was willing to offer me more money and perks, but couldn't give me a promise my job would always be safe, and he was right to say that, though it baffled me at the time.

There are splinters of GAF that need sorting out, for example the Steam group is being closed because it cannot be renamed and the creators migrated people to the other sites new group. Either a new group needs to be created, or the original creators need to pass management of the group to members still here. I imagine there are similar issues with discord and other venues of GAF discussion and community.

I do agree it's not feasible to have a perfect plan. One could also take the stance that everything would sort its self out in such an extreme situation. I figure there's no harm in bringing up the idea of the forum closing. Worst comes to worst, people will just move on elsewhere.

As for me making a Discord channel or the like, if I really wanted to do so I'd have done it all ready and presented it to the community.

Edit:

A message I'm attempting to convey (perhaps more accurately, attempting to draw out of and seek from people) is this. "Even if the worst happens, we're still here."

Seems a bit premature to worry about GAF closing.

The software updates/upgrades being deployed this November will go a long way in making GAF great again.

I'd expect we will get at least a bit of advance notice if that were to happen. Plus with lower traffic comes lower costs so it should be enough to keep it running. I don't know what's Evilore financial situation but i'd expect he is hit the most with lower revenue.

I don't revolve my life around a forum. Hundreds of them already exist, I just choose to stay here because the alternatives can be filled with even crazier posters like we saw during the implosion.

It's actually telling if this forum goes, because I don't want to deal with the far-left and far-right pricks. If there are no more neutral forums then I'm fine moving on from them completely.

Depends on how much the boss man wants to keep it around. If it were me and it was possible to cash out from this shit I would just bail and start something new. Open up a retro game shop or some shit. Maybe a brothel or something.. or a camsite. Invest my money in lots of equipment and start taking down casinos like in Oceans 11.

I'd be down for that. I'd be the recon guy. Scope out the place, set up the plan then hire some quality people to execute my plan.

Could get scary when dealing with some of the mafia types tho. But I'm Sure anyone has a price.

Edit:
I am now bisexual

Yeah, be an asshole. Expose kids who are browsing the website to that shit then get on a high horse. Human garbage.

The GAF that you knew no longer exists. It's not coming back.

Ever.

This is something different. It's best to move forward and treat it as such.

I can't see NeoGAF coming back to its former state or surviving long term.

  • The majority of the forum base, which kept the forum active, and alive is gone. The registration process is too limiting.
  • Regarding legislation being opened up, there is too much bad blood against the site and owner that you have the constant threat of kamikaze accounts posting porn, which effectively kills workplace traffic.
  • GAF isn't very differentiated from the new forum, which is just a SuperGAF.

You seem something like a RESET? Almost like a new ERA of this forum? I mean, I've heard rumors...

The biggest info dump of the whole year didn't even reach 50 posts before it died on Gaming. Its sad

Yeah It's great place - today there was screenshot going on twitter of a guy getting moderator warning for saying he likes Quiet design.

In a thread about diversity and representation. The post added nothing of value and was done to derail the thread. But yea, keep making comments when you dont even know the context

I don't trust whatever entity which arbitrates what has value and what doesn't because of how easy it is for them to push their agenda. Moderator warning for liking quiet design (a joke post) is a perfect example. The threads make your eyes roll and you can't even crack a joke.

What happened to those planned forum upgrades? That could have helped but we've heard nothing since the last update.
Qoute alerts, highlight to qoute/multi-quote, context sensitive spoilers, embedded formatting, embedded tweets and more are just some of the upgrades that exist already.

Just on a different forum ;)

Yeah it's called swapping forum software, but that's sorta difficult to do when you also need to make sure nearly all the posts are migrated over as well. Especially when the site has tens of thousands of posts.

And those features are built into XenForo.

Also please actually be contributing to the thread and not just shilling the other forum like come on.

To the other guy. They are presumably still being worked on. No clue on an ETA but give them some time testing needs to be done on a new theme as well since you cannot port a vbulletin forum like a snap of your fingers over to a new software.

Alexa still shows GAF with higher traffic levels than that other forum.

Alexa data is by no means excellent, but the trends are pretty clear.

Gaf went from around #650th in the US in late August to #2053 today, and it is continuing to fall rapidly.

Other place went from not existing a couple months ago to #1370 today. In terms of US traffic, which is likely where the most lucrative ad dollars are, neogaf is already lagging far behind.

Other place gaming side front page goes back 14 minutes.
Gaf gaming side front page goes back to 9AM.

It will only get worse if gaf continues to be this slow. I joined this site when there were less than 1000 users and it feels slower now than it did then, regardless of how many views threads are getting.

Community threads are all dead.

Maybe Gaf will move to a cheaper infrastructure, all depends of Evil Lore now. From business perspective is a hot potato now, but from a legacy, nostalgia , hobby perspective the forum could survive.

I can't say that I have anything against the reduced level of activity in the forum. While there is less traffic, there still are many high quality posts and I (personally) am still getting a lot of relevant information and interesting opinions. The forums are still my go-to for video game information and for reactions to news and public affairs.

Really? There's 17 posts in the Flynn thread, which is looking to be the biggest news story of the year.

And apparently someone posted porn gifs in there so half the posts are about that...

I think we can expect a notice from one of the mods if such a thing were to happen but it’s highly unlikely.

Haha more racism?

By virtue of less people = less racism really.

c_c That's not how that works.

Without proper moderation, it is a lot easier for people to get away with saying some rather offensive things (for example, I saw someone post about how "cutting your dick off" doesn't make you a woman, which would not have flied on the forum of olde). And by having fewer people, that ensures that certain people disaffected by OldGAF due to their shitty belief systems come out of the woodwork.

You still see it even if it gets moderated.

Just takes more time now, but a lot less of it than before.

It's funny. You can express your views and opinions and not get dog piled on then Insta-banned by a biased as hell mod who was friends with those attackers. Everybody isn't offended by stupid things like saying you like the color blue more than red.

GAF is better those hypocrites are gone. You have people who lurked for years posting again because they were afraid of being Insta-banned because they werent friendly with those mods who let their buddies dog pile and attack said poster before the ban.

GAF will rebuild in time again once people find out those disgustingly biased, hypocrite people are gone.

I agree 100% J-Rzez, yeah. We can finally get our alt-right views in the open without getting banned, fuck the commies.
