What happened to Channel Awesome?

I am surprised most folks don't remember the drama that happened at the CinemaSnob's site with the firing of a couple key folks...

I felt it was more like a disfunctional family on how everything happens there.

I used to the follow and sometimes still go back to see whats happening:
1) Nostalgia Critic
2) Atop of the Forth Wall for the Power Rangers stuff
3) The Cinema Snob
4) Angry Joe show

I am surprised to read about SpooneyOne and saddened to read about JewWario. :(

This vid by Miser Metokur sums up how TGWG messed up big time.

There's one for Spoony too, though that's a bit off topic, somewhat related to Awesome Channel before Spoony's eventual downfall:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KB5R73YGuY&t=4s

Both vids are pretty good going into detail about each person rise and fall.

this guy uses phrases like "sperging the fuck out"
I guess thats the kind of personality who would make content about internet drama and deviant art fetishes

Don't give that douche nozzle clicks, pls.

I clicked on a video out of curiosity, but yeah, you're right.

I think that for most of the people the CA thing started as a hobby, it was a new thing and they experimented with various styles of doing this new video on internet thingy. Then when they tried to turn that hobby into a business the harsh realities of making money hit them and attributed to the drama.

I stopped liking Nostalgia Critic when his videos became filled with skits, Phelous and The Cinema Snob are on their own places so I don't really need to visit Channel Awesome anymore maybe to occasionally watch Linkara but I'm not liking him lately either(also I heard he's in fact a big jerk too).

I need to know all the stories! Link me!

I was following Linkara for quite a while despite me hating his stupid persona, hat and all, as well as his incredibly cringey "storylines", just because I liked talk about comics.

Then I found ComicPop on Youtube (or TV Little House, as it was called back then), and never looked back. Cool guys and a smart girl talking actual interesting stuff about recent or huge comics. No silly stories, no weird "m'lady"-implying bullshit, just fun talks. That also brought me to ComicEexplained and ComicStorian for Story recaps and catching up, and that's covered all my comic video needs.

He should have stopped his silly persona shtick bullshit and just honestly talked about comics, and probably get out of CA.

I'll have to check those.

I got into Brandon Tenold recently, here's line another Cinema Snob and pretty good. I haven't seen Todd in a while. Didn't know he was still making videos. I still watch NC since he's usually good for a laugh and Rap Critic whenever I see a new video of theirs but not much else. Unless I see a video of theirs whose subject matter grabs my attention.

The sooner Tamara is dropped from Nostalgia Critic the better. She's improved since her early appearances, but she's still a detriment to virtually every sketch she features in.

Nah. You wanna see someone like that, go back and watch Nostalgia Chicks videos where she was clearly trying to sell her friend Nella as a new creator. She was completely unwatchable wanna made me turn off the video quicker than Linkara's plot sketches.

I do wonder why they're still trying to make the whole collaborator thing work.

Doug and Rob would probably do better if they left it, started their own venture with videos like NC and Sibling Rivalry and took to Patreon. There'd probably be a ton less drama and rumor-mongering as well.

My only experience of the Nostalgia Chick was a crossover video with the Nostalgia Critic.

It was enough to make me never want to watch any of her solo content ever.

I guess contracts.

Personally I also dont get it. The most worthwile stuff are the NC reviews and imo after about 1 year after the revival most of them are actually not that bad. They still have the skits but afaik because he still might have contracts with the actors for Demo Reel or he still wants to do that "comedy".

Don't judge her stuff by that. If you're interested in real film theory, you should check out some of her latest stuff she puts out under her real name Lindsey Ellis. She finally ditched (nearly) all the kitsch associated with that character (who she also ditched, btw, when she left CA) and instead is doing straight up academic film criticism. Her stuff has less emphasis on the funny and more on actually learning stuff, such as how shots are composed and why.

Honestly, though, even her Nostalgia Chick stuff was good for the most part because she eschewed the beat by beat review stuff that the Nostalgia Critic employs, where he basically just retells the movie, to instead jump around the film's plot in order to actually look at the overriding themes. However, this meant that when she crossed-over with the Critic, she was forced into a review style that emphasized her weaknesses (the skit stuff) and didn't let her show off her strengths (pulling from multiple chronological moments in a film in order to analyze themes).

That's not to say that all the Nostalgia Chick stuff is good. She fully admits that she did a bunch of videos on stuff she never watched as a kid or doesn't care for, simply because the material "fit" the character and she was expected to do it, and you can often tell when she has no connection and not much to say about a subject because it's fairly shallow.

They had no idea how to run their site. Shit got overcrowded. The cross collaborations became stupid as fuck. Not to mention their yearly movies which were dumpster fires. Combine that with the terrible managers behind the scenes and it all went to shit. Main contributors started dropping off like flies and there was no longer a reason to go to the website anymore with the growth of YouTube.

Nostalgia Chick - Nostalgia Critic crossovers are basically the only watchable episodes of Nostalgia Critic IMO. Also, those crossovers were probably written by Doug.

Chick isn't perfect (there's a prolonged stretch where she self-admittedly was churning out subpar videos because her real focus was on school) but she does the Internet Reviewer with a Persona thing far better than Nostalgia Critic does. It helps that instead of Critic's Manbaby Screeching, Chick's humor tended towards extremely dry sarcasm. But then she left Channel Awesome, dropped the persona for the most part (and, as of late, completely), and has put out a couple of long form film critique videos. She's one of a handful of good film critique Youtubers out there.

I still watch Kyle Kallgren's stuff. He's the only one that talked about films that actually interested me. Thought that's a bit of a double-edged sword since it means I skip a lot of his videos simply because it's something I want to watch so I don't want to get spoiled.

A great example of someone who has some good videos but doesn't self-promote in anyway and that's going to hurt, if not already hurting him in the long run. I know "branding" is a buzzword these days but if you want to increase viewers and revenue you got to know the social media/marketing angles (another thing Channel Awesome never quite got in to).

He's apparently doing well on Patreon to at least do videos, which I'm assuming isn't his day job so kudos to him. I like his stuff even if I overlook it.

I think she's said as much about the writing. She didn't write anything for the chipmunk movie and she disagreed with a lot of the stuff said in the Moulin Rouge episode, even stuff that she says in it because Doug wrote it.

Edit Oh well, watching it, and so far (2/3rds through) it's pretty much a tooon of digging up really old shit he did/was into long before he started out, rummaging through weird porn sites etc. IDK man.

ok..............
how is the rest of a video

Nothing changed. First half is about Linkara's crappy webcomic, a bit about his bad movie and then the rest is about him googling for porn kinks or visiting such forums.

Nothing of interest, really, except you're inclined to be riled up about how words like "shemales" were, at some point in time, terms that have been googled a bunch. It's basically "digging up shit" the video, if anyone's into that.

Should have focussed on the goddamn storylines and all. That shit's really infuriating.

The finale ep he'll go into the behind scenes stuff that went down at channel awesome, some of which involved Linkara which is why he didn't go into it in this ep. This vid is pretty skippable, just explains why Linkara became a meme.

Yeah this came out more as a look at what this guy is into and isn't that weird :/ Like sure he is/was into some strange porn but so what, honestly as long as he wasn't hurting anyone who cares. Heck he even showed a Tweet were Linkara owned up to it and said, yeah that was me, lets move on.

The only thing I can think of that's super eye rolley for Linkara was the rant about people asking about why the Power Rangers videos take so long. His comic is what it is but end of the day, guy seems to make a good stream of content, hasn't tried to or shown signs of stopping that any time soon.

The other 2 made good points about how these guys super messed up and ruined what was a good thing, as far as I can see Linkara's was more just trying to make fun of him for super cringe worthy stuff that doesn't really matter at the end of the day to anyone.
