My SO hasn't seen some all time movies - what should we watch this summer?

Was discussing with the woman today and found out she hasn't seen Ocean's Eleven and peak male human form Brad Pitt nor the masterpiece that grips me every time in The Dark Knight. Now, rest assured, I'm no movie aficionado, so we have decided to bucket list a few mainstream classics to watch, like my favorites such as Pulp Fiction, The Departed, Twelve Angry Men, etc along with other ones she hasn't seen like Die Hard, Alien and Aliens, Twelve, The Matrix, Citizen Kane etc.

So any suggestions someone must watch before they die? Feel free to toss out examples. Foreign movies with western sensibilities like The Raid work. Movies like No Country for Old Men, Logan, and so on are great suggestions.

Warning: not a huge Fight Club or Se7en guy.

PS: She may not know the twist from The Sixth Sense or Terminator 2.

So many to mention but I revisited Donnie Darko the other day and what a movie. Gotta go theatrical though. Not that I've seen the director's cut but it seems to me that any change to a perfect movie could only make it worse.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Perfect relationship movie
Oh shit.

Definitely.

Well, what is she like? What movies does she like? Or is this just a stealth brag thread about having a girlfriend?

Chill on me my dude.

We're just looking for those must see before you die movies. Anything from Mean Girls to Casino Royale (she watched this with me for the first time and liked it) works.

Given the movies you mentioned, I would say mainstream Hollywood productions, which weren't released during summer in the last 20 years are a safe call.

Shawshank Redemption.

*edit* since Robaperas threw in a korean revenge movie, let add The Man from Nowhere in there, as well.

The Intouchables is a fantastic movie and severely underrated. Bought it on a whim from Google Play one day a few years back. No regrets.

I bought Chinatown about a month ago too. That movie absolutely lives up to the hype.

Maybe also look at watching The Shawshank Redemption and The Godfather Parts 1 & 2...pretend 3 doesn't exist. Sofia Coppola ruins that movie.

Edit: Also seconding HEAT as mentioned above. That movie has the greatest shootout scene in cinema.

Lots of good movies listed in this thread, but the three above are all-time greats. In fact, they're user-rated as the top 3 movies of all-time over on IMDB.

Just go down that list, OP. It's a relatively accurate list of the best movies of all-time that everyone should see.

my sister had never seen the back to the future movies somehow while i had seen them many times over as a kid. i let her borrow my blu ray movies and she loved them. always nice to see people watch some good movies and enjoy them. same with lord of the rings and she became obsessed with them.

Haha I'm already in Team There is no Godfather Part 3. Love the first two.

Was gonna ask about Heat seeing as I really love The Dark Knight.

The Princess Bride

Another vote for this.

Young Guns is probably the most fun western ever made. It's a western in and out, but so distilled late 80's. Hard to explain. I always recommend this movie to people who haven't even seen older films because it seems to be timeless.

For something more classic, if she hasn't seen Pulp Fiction then that's pretty much a requirement.

Frank. Don't look at the cast list, just know it's about an eccentric band. That's all I want to say without ruining anything for you.

This is image is so you know what to look for.
