There are exceptions (Chronicles, Labrynth, etc..), but even the worst Sonic games have soundtracks that put most of the gaming landscape to shame.

For example, Sonic & the Black Knight isn't just a bad Sonic game - it's a terrible video game - but it has a soundtrack so ridiculously, unfathomably solid that I bought the official release.

Another voice for Sonic 3 & Knuckles

But I'm gonna go one further and specifially mention the PC version (yes, there was one!) found in the 1997 release of Sonic & Knuckles Collection. Carnival Night Zone, Ice Cap Zone, Launch Base Zone, Knuckles' theme, the Competition menu and the credits music were all changed, and for me all the tracks are better than the original Sonic 3 tracks, except maybe Ice Cap (I love both versions!)

However, I'm well aware of there being a lot of hate for the PC tracks - I guess it depends on which version of the game you grew up with.

Here's the PC (FM synthesizer) version of Launch Base Act 1

Hard to say, I could listen to starlight or hilltop or icecap all day long but they're all on separate games (1, 2 & 3 respectively).

Probably 1 as it also has Spring Yard.

Sonic & Knuckles. I'm not a huge fan of most of the MJ tracks in Sonic 3 so I'm going for S&K on its own. It retains the great boss themes from 3 and replaced the mid boss and Knuckles themes I never liked. Love the themes for Flying Battery, Sandopolis, Lava Reef and Sky Sanctuary.

Sonic 3 does have some good tracks like Hydrocity and Ice Cap. But I'm not a fan at all of the themes for Carnival Night and Launch base.

Sonic 3 and Knuckles, thank you MJ <3

Hydrocity definitely gets my vote as the best, but Flying Battery hasn't been linked to yet and needs some more love.

yes..

Planet Wisp from Sonic Colours is brilliant. Seriously though, the Sonic games don't deserve such phenomenal soundtracks.

Also, yes.

Sonic 2 is my favourite, but I love the majority of them.

Other favourites are:
Sonic 1 (MS version)
Sonic 1 (MD PAL version)
Sonic Adventure 2
Sonic Unleashed
Sonic and the Secret Rings

Oh man, how can you choose? Unless you had the fortune to write off any Sonic games from 2002 onwards, this is really hard. Every game, regardless of gameplay quality, has a banger of a soundtrack. Sonic 1-3, Sonic Rush, Unleashed all have completely different styles for example.

I don't think I could even do a top 10 and with Mania around the corner it would probably invalidate it quickly anyway!

P.S. Seriously, it must be a blessing for those who've only played the original Genesis games.

Sonic CD (EU/JP), Sonic 3 & Knuckles is full of gems, Sonic Heroes is also pretty unappreciated, hell even the first Sonic Adventure had some good ones.

If you count S3&K as one soundtrack then it wins easily, no contest. If you separate them then it gets much harder. Probably S&K for Flying Battery, Lava Reef 2, Sky Sanctuary and some carryovers from S3.

Shout-outs to Mystic Cave and Hydrocity 2 for being the best from other games, and quite probably my overall favourites.

Probably Sonic 3 & Knuckles for me, but I want to give a shoutout to the Saturn version of Sonic 3D Blast since it hasn't been mentioned yet:

Rusty Ruin Act 2 is probably my favorite track.

I like it a lot more than the Genesis version, although I'd agree the latter fits a Sonic game (fun, bouncy) much better than Jacques' more atmospheric soundtrack.

Edit: Shoutout as well to one of my all-time favorite tracks from the series that's often ignored for the better-known Genesis versions, Bridge Zone (remix by Tee Lopes): https://youtu.be/oQFXa5YeZHw

I think the earliest batch of games were uniquely in tune with the contemporary pop zeitgeist in a way that no other game really was. They kind of lost that as time went on, even if the music was still good, it just veered off towards more typical Japanese game music.

This is kind of hard. Sonic 3 and Knuckles take my top spot easily, but Sonic Adventure seires, Unleashed, CD, Advanced. also have a sweet spot in my heart. Generations too, if not by the fact it is basically remixing pieces of the older Sonic games.

If we're talking about single songs, than it's gotta be Planet Wisp.

Soundtrack as a whole definitely goes to Unleashed tho

Sonic CD's Japanese soundtrack has the best stage music, but I love the dumb vocal themes from Sonic Adventure 2 so much, that one probably takes it.
