A Nintendo Switch has been taken apart

Here's a look at the Shield and Shield TV tears downs to compare the cooling:

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
Wow. So tight. No wasted space. Anyone expecting a slimmer version with better battery life is SOL.

Date code is "1629" in addition to the A2 designation.
This means 2016 Week 29 which is around July 2016.
UDNX02-A2 is another code printed.
This seems to confirm that this IS a custom chip for Nintendo. Considering the Switch was codenamed Nintendo NX during its development. .

First picture is Tegra X1. Note the chip ends with "A1" revision/designation
Second picture is the Tegra in Nintendo Switch. The chip ends with "A2" revision/designation.

Really the biggest battery that could fit in there, nice!

Also it seems it's just using a plug, so replacing it yourself could be possible.

So does that battery size mean there was no way they could have made it charge faster? Or could there be a Switch revision with fast charge down the line?

That was one awesome electrical and mechanical design right there. Really great placing, especialy how the fan is placed to target the most heat-generating parts.

I don't think there's any way the Switch could have a better battery life without the device being larger. Games this demanding drain the battery fast, think how mobile games kill your smartphone quickly.

The thousands upon thousands of hot, sweaty man hours seem to have paid off! The way that thing is packed together so tightly makes me ashamed of how I pack for work trips.

I don't understand what the fuck I'm looking at. Y'all must be a lot smarter than me.

There were a LOT of complaints about the battery - even though Thraktor completely explained why Nintendo quoted the battery time figures.

This now shows just how huge the battery is and that you probably couldn't fit or allow for any bigger size battery.

And if you throw it in your backpack as extra protection against pushes maybe?

Sure. Your guess is as good as mine.

Just from a physical and conceptual perspective, Switch may be the most well engineered piece of gaming hardware ever created for what it sets out to do.

Wow everything is tightly put together, they really didn't waste any space with the switch. I'm kind of glad the battery is a big as it can be, I thought nintendo would have had a wiiu gamepad situation

I still don't understand how so many could ignore his really well written and great explanation :/. Meh.

Dat L-shaped heat pipe. FoxConn leak strikes again!

[Edit: Nvidia weren't kidding about how much work went into this thing to make it possible, from all facets. Just looking at the dense, yet clean and thoughtful layout of the board is telling. It makes certain comments about the system hardware kinda lame, as though it's a trivial thing to add more RAM, Battery capacity, storage, etc, in a space this tiny. It's a real disservice to engineers who devoted that much time and effort. I'm impressed, and hope for a round-table event similar to "Iwata Ask" special that detailed Wii U design]

What's up with that thing "covering" the battery? I've never seen it in smartphones teardowns.

It may be to soak up any potential battery leaks in case it drops? Not sure.

Perhaps protective insulation for the backplate? Since holding the Switch naturally while its portable would have your hand over the battery, and if that thing may get hot in use...

Either way, definitely interesting to see the insides. Wish there were higher resolution photos to work with.
