UPDATE LOG:
  • Oct 18th, 2011 - Thread Created

Play through nine zones spanning twenty years of Sonic’s history. From Green Hill to
Planet Wisp. Relive your favorite levels in a whole new way.

New remixes of your favorite Sonic soundtracks. Great remixes as done by Jun Senoue and Cash-Cash. Don’t like a certain tune? You have the option to change it to a different Sonic song before starting the level!

Old Friends, new missions. Rescue Sonic’s errm...”spiffy” friends as you progress though the game and no, they are not playable. Each friend will give you ten missions per zone ranging from beating your own ghost to fighting off giant Badniks. With nine zones, 2 acts per zone and ten missions per zone, you’ll have hours upon hours of gameplay ahead of you.

Old enemies, New dangers. Your favorite and maybe not-so favorite bosses and rivals return. Metal Sonic, Shadow, Silver, Eggman and more in old boss fights fought in new ways. Don’t like Shadow and Silver? At least you get to beat the crap outta them! Boss fight seem too easy? Put it on hard mode.

Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic play styles in one package. Play as the rolly-polly classic Sonic and spindash through classic and modern zones on a 2D plane with classic Genesis gameplay, OR boost along as Modern Sonic. Grinding, sliding and jumping through a 3-D world with dynamic camera angles. Both styles are full of high-speed action and alternate routes.

Red Rings and Chaos Emeralds return. But why and in what fashion? You’ll have to play the game to find out.

Tons of secrets and bonuses. Galleries, music and other unlockables await you.

PREVIEWS:
  • Games Radar

"The mission modes work like they did when replaying levels in Sonic Adventure, only now they're separate and can take wildly different routes, even making some parts look like a traditional 'Act 2, they're so different. I tried a 'doppelganger race', where Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic square off against each other in a dash through a previously cleared level. It works well, especially when you trigger a collapsing platform and watch your hapless competitor fall straight through it."

    Destructoid

"I absolutely refuse to be excited for the game until I played the whole thing, but I can say that I've played four stages to date, and I've been confidently happy with three of them (I'll need to play the Modern Green Hill Zone again to properly gauge it). The City Escape levels are plenty of fun, look gorgeous, and have been tightly designed. With everything else looking promising, this could be a good one, but I'm not willing to discount the fact that this is a big prank yet."

    SegaBits

"With better controls, greater level designs and art direction that makes each stage feel different in its own way, Sonic Generations is looking so far to be the comeback game for SEGA’s blue mascot."

    IGN

"As for the dock-shredding, hedgehog devouring killer whale from Sonic Adventure, well, it seems age has made him more of a passive, docile comrade these days rather than a murderous psychopath. We bounced around the beautifully revamped Seaside Hill stage with the ferocity of a perfectly planned pinball game, with Sonic looking and feeling better than he ever has in 3D. That is, until the inevitable moment of dread in a Sonic game occurred – we took what seemed to be a wrong turn and suddenly careened towards doom. It was then that the orca whale leapt up out of the sea to swallow us whole, only to…gently bounce us back in to the safety of the stage with the tip of his nose? What the hell, SEGA! He's supposed to be a killer whale? But hey, as long as we're still alive then no complaints here."

REVIEWS:
  • IGN - 8.5

"It feels refreshing to be able to say that Sonic is good again. His upward trajectory over the last year continues and he’s only gaining momentum. Sonic Generations is largely a game for the most hardcore of Sonic fans, but for the millions who have fond memories of narrowly dodging spikes, grinding on rails, or even that time he was a pinball, Sonic Generations is a game made for you."

    Video Games Zone - 8.5

"Sonic Generations may not make the leap back to the top genre, but at least the game is again a serious alternative to Little Big Planet and Co."

    Destructoid - 8.0

"In truth, I have to admit that the Modern Sonic levels are actually more fun. While there are some truly enjoyable 2D stages, the contemporary variants are almost always more exhilarating thanks to their sheer intensity. Such highlights include an explosive new take on the Chemical Plant Zone and an utterly gorgeous Speed Highway level. All told, there are surprisingly few duds compared to the overwhelming majority of bad levels seen in most of the recent titles."

    GamesRadar - 8.0

"This is easily the best Sonic game since the hog's Sonic 2 glory days. Surprisingly, modern Sonic's levels are the more impressive and fun and, while low-speed control is still clumsy, the wealth of quality action scenes cherry-picked from the past two decades make the overwhelming majority of Sonic Generations an absolute blast."

    Official X-Box Magazine - 7.0

"The 2D levels feel as close to the original Genesis games as ever, and their use of old-school moves and physics was a smart call. But even the 3D takes on Sonic’s oeuvre do the franchise justice, as they avoid most camera-based frustrations of early 3D editions. The two takes on nine different stages actually benefit from being based on the same template: seeing a 2D version of a modern enemy or hearing an updated version of Green Hill Zone’s iconic theme makes you want to try both stage types."

    1up.com - B

"Amazingly -- through one of the greatest exercises in self-control the franchise has seen since Macarena jokes were topical -- Sonic Generations comes closer than ever to delivering the true evolution Sonic fans have been anticipating since the advent of the Dreamcast. And even though Sonic entered this world 20 years ago as the anti-Mario, Generations' liberal borrowing from Nintendo's school of game design stands as one of Sega's smartest decisions in years."

    GameTrailers - 8.1

"Sonic hasn't been this good in years"

    Gamecentral 7.0

"As a 20th anniversary celebration this is a far more successful experience then we would've dared hope, especially given some of the darker days during the last two decades. It still doesn't really suggest how the series can move forward in the future, but at least it lays to rest some of the worst excesses of the past."

    3DS REVIEWS

    GamesRadar - 7.0
" Don't get me wrong - I adore the 3D treatment given to the old levels (especially Green Hill) and S-grade runs are breathless, precision affairs that look great and feel even better. But the new levels are just too unambitious and end up playing like Sonic's recent DS outings, only with polygonal visuals and 3D depth."

Excellent.

So, can you play as only classic Sonic for the entire game if you wanted? I can't remember anyone saying how exactly that works.

Might bite on GMG. Still sad i cant just pay half and only play the classic Sonic levels, lol. No interest in the modern crap.

Very nice OT.

Did they release the soundtrack yet? I need it.

I suppose I'll check out the game eventually as well.

AWESOME OT, guys!

Also, RobbieNick... you don't need to fix this because it isn't very important, but...
White Time and Space is the correct translation of 白の時空. It doesn't matter, though.

No. Classic Sonic is usually Act 1. Modern Sonic is usually Act 2. You must play them both.

Unfortunately no info about the soundtrack yet. I'm still checking up on it every day, though. :/

They'd better release separate ones for both the 3DS and HD versions because they're both different.

Excellent OP!

Loving the new Modern Sonic demo, looking forward to Generations a lot!

Shame all the awesome levels are 3DS exclusive >_>

Mpl90

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
You selected my idea for the title!
I'm happy! XD

P.S. But it's better with the correction of another user

"IGN: What Sonic can learn from Sonic"

:p

However, looking forward 3DS version.

Uh-Oh. Are we in trouble?

doubt it, Arkham City OT made it, they were more strict about it before, i just dont like it personally. Its weird to make an OT and see pages upon pages of discussion before the game is even out.

Very nice OP, after colours I expect good things from generations, the game seems promising so far so i'm pretty hyped for a solid and enjoyable game at the very least.
I'm now left wondering what the final 2 zones for the 3DS game will be, commence hoping for Aquarium Park.

I really like SEGA finally embracing the PC though, i'll say that. More excited about the new PC version of Sonic CD than this though.

Great OP, you have no idea how HYPE I am for this game (though chances are by the time I'll get it I'll have moved out to start my job XD)
