XCOM: Enemy Unknown |OT| Neo GAF is Under Alien Control

Well, like so many, my time with XCOM EU has come to a....pause before I ever completed a Classic / Ironman win.
Effectively, the end. I deleted the game from my PS3 and am eager to play new games.

It feels great to play well and grind out victories against long odds, but it also sucks to see your entire squad wiped over a single routine mistake. (In this case, I mistook my rocket heavy for my holo targeting heavy.)

And...despite trying every which way to save my fourth (or is it fifth) sustained Ironman campaign after that sad misstep...

Save file deleted, and I'm moving on...and happily so XCOM, you were fun while it lasted...

I wouldn't mind a game that is basically the same game but improved, like the Civilization series works.
There's a lot of room for improvements even though XCOM EU/EW is very, very solid and good game in itself.

I fully expect the new CIV game to come out, then some time afterwards a new XCOM game to be announced. I don't know exactly what they'll change or improve, but I have faith that Firaxis can make a profoundly great and improved experience.

Also, I don't know that a sequel really needs to change the concept behind the basic narrative. Earth defending themselves from an alien invasion is a pretty wide reaching idea.
 
I wouldn't be surprised to see the studio take a much different tack with the sequel, spinning it away from the scifi and into alt-history, gothic horror or steampunk. They may even mash it up with WW2 or the Cold War instead of the imminent future setting. I don't expect them to go more futuristic with it.

What won't change is that they game will have a great deal more random elements-some map randomness/generation, Steam workshop support, and expanded elements on some of the parts of the game that seemed a little weak (UFO interception, covert operations). It will still be easy to play and have more or less the same clean and consisent design of the core tactical mechanics.

Oh, I beat this game on normal a couple weeks ago. Lots of fun but when you get all of your guys to colonel, normal mode is a bit easy.

I got a little tired of the game, but I might go back to it later.

Is the bureau the same gameplay pretty much? I haven't installed it yet, I'll probably play it soonish.

The Bureau is a sort of Mass Effect style team (you+friendly team AI characters) shooter. I thought the game was great-it had some really bizzare/amazing set pieces but you will be annoyed/hate the friendly AI every step of the way.

It's a mixed bag. It's way better than the 66 metacritc score it got. Just play it on the PC, and I would suggest playing the highest difficutly-once you get through some of the AI quirks you'll be glad you did so.

On the plus side, I hear the Long War mod is cool. I should try it out sometime.
I should give it a try at some point, I heard a lot of good things about it... but I'm always discouraged by the fact that some of the features listed and of the people endorsing it tend to strike me as byproducts of hardcore masochism.

Tbh I'd rather the civ reboot approach then the interceptor/xcom spinoff approach, but I'm confident firaxis had the chops to do either

Anyone played the iOS version of XCOM? I got gifted an iPad and I noticed it was on the app store. Looks like it's the full PC game, without Enemy Within, mind you, which would be rather impressive if true. Is it, or are there some tings missing?

I bought XCOM Enemy Within on iOS. I think it's the full game but has fewer "random" maps so you might see a few more repeats during a typical run through the game.

I'm loving this game though, super addicting on iPad. I'm playing on an iPad 4 and load times are pretty minimal.

Actually, I went back to the game this summer. Perfect for hot summer nights.

Finished on Classic/Ironman, stats below.

A late addition, regular squaddie Sniper, named after a childhood school friend
became "the volunteer."
...after a better soldier, also named after a schoolfriend, died on the field of battle. Most proud of the fact that all Terror Missions / Extractions / Escorts were completed, usually with low ranking troops mixed with SHIV units. It pays to keep going even if you lose a couple squad members on a terror mission...you can still win if you are very patient and strategic.

My endgame advice: have more than one Assault with Ghost armor (used conservatively) for the final battle.

362 Aliens killed.
33 Battles won / Zero lost.
11 Soldiers lost.
14 Founding countries covered with satellites.

Thomas Hutch Extraction Mission / Impossible / July / 4 Squaddies (some with low will) + 2 Vets

I finally figured this one out. It had been my "Mission Impossible". (I pretty much always take mostly or all recruits on Council Missions.)

Mission prep (take multiple Medi kits to counter poison)

1. Move company left and take the bridge, protecting the weak spot on left side of sculpture while wiping out the pod of Thin Men across the bridge w/o triggering anything else.
2. Move 4 across bridge (Include at least one assault with run and gun) and take up positions to the left of the far left column, again, no trigger.
3. Move 2 back towards start with one sniper ending up behind on of the planters on top and one soldier flanking the benches below from a safe distance
4. Slowly move 4 along Museum steps. You will have to wipe out two pods of Thin Men who will move/flee according to your position when you trigger them, so sequence of move is important.
5. 2 troops left at start will deal with any migrating Thin Men, and possibly trigger the 4th pod of Thin Men closest to Hutch on the far side of map. If they don't trigger, carefully surround them without activating Hutch.
6. Once entire first placements of Thin Men are taken out release Hutch and have him RUN to next car over on first move. Put everyone in Overwatch with at least 4 shots prepped for area
on Museum right.
7. Take out the
1st wave Thin Men spawn
, move Hutch maximum again AFTER enemies dispatched.
8. Reposition entire company towards entrance putting anyone possible on overwatch.
9. Take out
final Thin Man spawn
and move Hutch to freedom.

Yay.

Wow, what a game! I finally beat it after 60 hours of game play and have to say this is easily in my top 10 greatest games all time. That final mission was incredible as I ended up losing my whole squad except my trusty Sniper(over 200 kills in 80+ missions) and the special character. Now I want to start another game all over again.
 
Bit of a bump. Quick question.

I played through like 60% of the base game when it came out.

Now I have the option of getting EU and I basically wanna start the campaign from scratch. Should I get this and then begin from scratch or do I finish the base game and the play this?
 
I'm playing Xcom: Enemy Unknown right now and I have a question in regards to measuring out the stats of the basic fightercrafts. I'm too early in the game to be able to build any firestorms. So I have to settle with my fleet of Ravens for the time being. Unfortunately, Ravens have poor durability when they're up against larger ufo's. I know that their selectable armaments include its standard phoenix cannon, but you can also load them with avalanche and laser cannon upgrades. Other upgrade components that I've experimented with are the aim and dodge matrixes that you can craft from the carcasses of sectoids and floaters.

That being said, what's the most effective and economic strategy when dealing with larger class ufo's by the time June arrives? I've been able to down the larger boxy looking crafts by having 4 ravens down them with phoenix cannons through trial and error. Are there more effective tactics, though? I've found that lasers deal heavy damage, but only at close range. I was actually able to down a larger craft with a pair of laser equipped Ravens, but I did so in tandem with enhancement matrixes. I can't help but think this tactic is ineffecient for more seasoned players, so I'm open to any helpful advice.
