I think that they did it because they have more control how to check multiple purchases during promo deals than they have with PayPal. They support PayPal outside deals.

For me, it was a straight up $7 charge with no additional fees. One mobile phone verification later code came as "Playstation Gift Card" and redeemed it on the PC Playstation store with no issues at all.

What did it say when it was canceled?

I bought two PS Plus subs some time ago, a $10 Nintendo card 2 days ago (also 30% off) and the $10 PSN today, never had a problem.
