At least where I live, it seems any acknowledgement of that the worse aspects of our area (e.g. "there are a lot of racists in this community") gets dismissed more or less, even though the people I work alongside acknowledge existence of racism/bad local government/etc. and call out non-local instances of it in the news. Negative opinions about our city are notably unpopular to the point I tend not to bring it up.

Is this a universal constant, where people want to defend their hometown/neighborhood, or is the level of defensiveness notably different from place to place?

Paedophilia is a mental illness and the only way we can hope to stop sexual assaults on minors is to treat it as such. Don't get me wrong, I completely understand why it's such an emotionally charged subject, but reactionary condemnation doesn't help anyone in the long run.

Harry Potter is a trash series, both in book and (especially) in movie form. The idea of a wizarding school with a bunch of adventures is on paper something I'd love, but the execution was awful in every facet (except for Hagrid, he's cool).

People put too much stock in finding their one and only and look fucking pathetic when it doesn't work out. I think it is entirely foolish that you would put so much stock into another person that you almost cannot function if the relationship doesn't work out. Too many people in this world are too utterly terrified of being alone. If you always need another person at your side to get along in this world and validate you, you are a weak person.

Around here? It'd probably be that I agree with Sam Harris' views on Islam, and a lot of other things he has to say.

Alcohol causes more harm than good in the world and we'd be better off without it.

Capitalism fucks with our priorities and leads to harmful social structures that fucks us over even more. I don't have a solution, I just know that anyone who says capitalism is the perfect culmination of what humans are capable of is delusional beyond all reckoning.
