Sonic Mania |OT| Dreams Come True

Just finished my first run. Seems I stopped last night on the final boss of the game because I was getting frustrated! Too much hype running through my veins. I tried rushing it instead of being cautious and got punished.

Came back to it just now and beat it on my second attempt this session!

Although i agree the storytelling aspects aren't the best, in terms of sheer gameplay, level design and music, this is my favourite Sonic game. Absolutely nailed it from front to back and played with my expectations perfectly.

Think I'm short of about 3 emeralds, so I'm about to use the
level select
to grind for them!

How to enable
& Knuckles mode before/on the level select screen? The setting doesn't seem to stick. I can only play as Sonic, Tails, Sonic and Tails or Knuckles?

I understand that. But the post I was quoting made it out that if you play Egg Reverie with Sonic + Knuckles, there's a bonus wee ending. I can play every other stage as those two, but Egg Reverie seems to always be limited to just one character.

Unfortunately, I don't have it unlocked, so I can't tell you. But two clarifications:

It's Knuckles & Knuckles, not Sonic & Knuckles. So you have to access this from the Level Select. You may be able to use Y to cycle to Knuckles, and then X to possibly toggle Knuckles on once you have "& Knuckles" mode unlocked otherwise. That's how it works for Sonic & Tails.

I tested with Sonic & Tails on Egg Reverie, but Tails didn't show up. The YouTube video showed the same thing with Knuckles & Knuckles. I tried beating it with just Knuckles, but didn't get the alternate ending. Again, though, I don't have & Knuckles mode unlocked yet.

if Classic Sonic transports to his own world after Forces i honestly don't mind it.
Was fine with it in Generations too.

My problem is that it fucks Sonic timeline.

Mania is a sequel to 3K, but the Modern Sonic games are also sequels (we have Sonic remembering CD in Adventure 1, or remembering areas in Generations, when Classic Sonic came from the past).

But Mania establishes that Classic era is from another dimension, so now nothing makes sense lol

Edit: i guess there is but what code?

Level Select code. Title screen, hold Y, UUDDLRLRLRBA on Switch. But I've heard some people say you can also just hold B, Y, and press + on Switch to activate it too. Not sure about the other platforms, but I'd guess they use the bottom and right buttons for B and A instead?

Got the true ending

did this ending connect with Forces? because Sonic doesn't look like he returns with Tails and Knuckles, and I doubt they did a Sonic 2 8-bits bad ending lol

The very end screen
matches the kicking pose Sonic appears in at the start of the first Sonic Forces trailer, and the game helps explain why Classic Sonic is there again. And in the E3 Sonic Forces trailer, Infinite's attack makes the exact same sound as the gem in Mania.

Modern Sonic and Classic Sonic are still the same Sonic, it's the Forces Sonic that's from a different dimension, seeing as he lives in an alternate timeline where Eggman took over.

Mirage Saloon Act 1
. There's one right after the
plane
segment to the left of the stage. I'm sure there's one sooner.

Chemical Plant act 1. Take the standard path and then go left while in the tube. It takes about 20 seconds to get from the start of the stage to the bonus stage.

For me, the zone after Flying Battery. It's under the bottom left of the first big rotating cylinder, just like in Launch Base Act 1 in Sonic 3 :)

There's 2 like in less than a minute in Green Hill act 1.

Thanks everyone! Man, these special stages get pretty tough after the first few.

Yeah,
Titanic Monarch Zone
wasn't one of my favorites. It was designed well enough, but by the end I was pretty tired of the
spheres
gimmick.

Yeah, it was honestly the only zone in the game I didn't love. Though I loved the Act 2 boss.

Overall, this is my favorite Sonic game ever and in my top 3 games of 2017.

Ah yeah in that way it indeed fucks up the timeline quite a bit i never played sonic adventure 1 so i did not know about that part. Seems like i need to replay generations too.

Thanks it worked. The shortcut version also works btw. (Switch)

hmm maybe it's that
Modern Forces Sonic could be the guy from the other dimension, yeah. Well see when it releases.

that puzzling face
take the discussion over to the leak/spoiler thread if you're too lazy to spoiler it

edit: er, addressed at a deleted post, in case this seems like a non-sequitur

I think Mirage Saloon is my favorite level. I was super stoked to realize that
when you play through as Knuckles the first act is totally different, and actually designed around his gliding ability, rather than the goofy flying level that Sonic plays. Awesome.

Just because they're separate universes, doesn't mean similar or some of the same events don't happen in both.

There's still Angel Island, Marble Garden, Sandopolis and Doomsday Zones that have never been redone in another game. So they have a few more zones to work with.

What a tease with the Angel Island music remix and art assets too...

Sega has the rights to resell the unaltered ROM with the original music.

I just don't get why SEGA doesn't just compose new tracks for Carnival Night, Launch Base and Ice Cap...

Hell, let Tee Loops make original mixes of those tracks. The great work he did on Mania proves he has the chops of making original sonic compositions. Or make things easy; use remixes from past Sonic games (Sonic 3D Blast, Sonic Adventure, etc) for the 'legal issue' zones.

Knuckles has two other original acts too. Green Hill Act 1 and Lava Reef Act 2 are brand new levels, something Sonic nor Tails explores.

that would be a hell of a coincidence, but I guess it could happen..

I don't know. It seems like they could make nice new songs that take some cues from the originals, enough that they're kinda remixes, but not really enough for legal issues. Just using Ice Cap's bass and beat with a whole new song, Launch Base's GOGOGOGO in the background of a new song, and Carnival Night whatever. Carnival Night is probably the easiest of the three because an upbeat pop style remix of Balloon Park would probably work just fine.

These are gross. They wouldn't use these

GHZ1 actually converges both routes about halfway in. Knuckles just starts elsewhere.

It would have to, since modern games still reference the classic ones. Its just after S3K that they branch off.

You know what would have been cool? If [Mirage Saloon act 2 boss spoilers]
the magician egg robo turned into Honey too.

If you told me id be having fun with a sonic game in 2017 I'd prolly would've laughed at you.

Spent a good amount of my time smiling during the first couple acts. Gonna take a break now but it feels good playing sonic again.

If I got to Icecap or Launch Base and heard that shit instead of the original song I'd want a refund tbh

So you would rather NO re-release then, right? Because that is what you are basically saying. If they cannot use the original tracks, I would rather they make original mixes or re-use the PC version of Sonic 3 & Knuckles tracks instead.

I would honest-to-god rather just have emulated rereleases of S3K like we've been getting than a "Taxman edition" of S3K that couldn't use the original music, yes. If they ever make a "Taxman edition" of S3K it needs to be the definitive way to play the game, which it can't be without the original soundtrack.

Entry of the Gladiators is a public domain song. Carnival Night is just a remix of that song. It can't be that hard lol

Ever been in a Super Meat Boy port thread?

Yep. It can't be considered the "definitive" version of the game when the old game is superior in music.

It's not just one or two songs either, it's half the soundtrack of the game.

Separating Classic and Modern into separate dimensions saves a lot of headache from arguing. Modern still has the same past, but Classic Sonic should have an alternate future where he keeps having Classic adventures and doesn't degrade into that monstrosity. It makes no change for fans of the old timeline while giving Classic fans their own timeline. Everybody wins.

Will play through Sonic CD now on steam a kind gaffer gave me a code yesterday and i have not played that in a decade+ (on gamecube sonic gems collection as a kid) and don't remember much of it.

Hopefully i can use my ps4 controller through motionjoy or whatever program.

Wonder how much i will like it and where i will rank it with the other classic games and Mania later today/tonight when i am done:p

Man, Special Stage 5 is sooo tricky. I'm gonna beat it sometime today but is it hard to keep up the pace along with the turns and not get hit D:

My thought is that the modern games have the same past story, but we never played those versions. Stuff like Adventure's and Sonic 4's flashbacks to CD use all modern designs. Sonic 1, 2, 3 and CD happened in the modern universe, just slightly different, and we never saw it.

Generations poses a problem with this theory, but Sega has already blurred the lines between alternate dimensions and time travel with Sonic 2006 and Sonic Rush. So it's not really something new for the series to mix up the two.

Maybe the modern stages in Generations are the actual versions of those stages in the Modern universe from the hypothetical games we never got to play.

Well, I got all 7 chaos emeralds on my Sonic & Tails file.

Super Sonic is as fun as ever, I love blazing through the stages in crazy times.

Still not unlocked any of the stuff in the Extras menu though, I'm terribad at Blue Sphere stages.

I just completed it with the seven Chaos Emeralds. Definitely my new favourite Sonic game! That is saying a lot since living up to the classics, let alone surpassing them was formerly an extremely tall order. Whitehead, Thomley, Pagoda West and everyone involved did what nobody else could do for Sonic in the past two decades, and I really hope they will all return to make more games.

Oh my god this boss suuuuucks

First game over at
Oil Ocean A2
as Knuckles

I ain't got the jump height brah

defeat those strange ball tentacles first hit em as they go up after both are gone you can easily hit eggman. Just make sure to avoid those laser and sting tentacle attacks.

Yeah, that would have been neat to round out the characters.

I was taking my time with the boss to see if he would
turn into Mighty or Ray.
I suppose you could make the argument that Fang/Bark/Bean were used because they're villans or (at the very least for bean and bark) neutral characters.
.

Really excited for the future of the franchise. As others have said, they have plenty of opportunity for to continue this formula with new zones. Mania 2 should rightly start with Emerald Hills Zone.

Personally I say GHZ is the only Sonic 1 zone fit to be in this game. All the others in that game are either boring as hell (Marble, Labyrinth) or were basically remade better in later games (Starlight, Spring Yard, Scrap Brain).

Like obviously you'd choose Stardust Speedway over Starlight. Yes, there's differences, but not enough.

I'd rather them go on to make Sonic 5 next with all new stuff instead of doing Sonic Mania 2 (do that for the 30th anniversary)

What game remade Spring Yard? That sounds awesome.

DualShock 4 works natively in Steam.

I mean Spring Yard basically became the casino levels in the later games, as well as Collision Chaos - well, a lot of zones in CD really. It's the prototype of any flipper/bumper heavy level.

In Mania's case, it's basically been usurped by Studiopolis.
