Kevin went full Ethan this week. lol

I am pretty pumped for Xbox One X, so I welcome Kevin as the official Xbox version of Ethan.

Instead of "this game would be great, if I wasn't tethered to a TV," I want "this game would be great if it didn't look like a blurry 720p game from a decade ago."

I was actually surprised that he (and Greg) were that optimistic on Xbox based on what was shown. Microsoft has had stronger E3s in terms of game announcements/exclusives and those years were not enough even coupled with price reductions and some great pack-in offers. Not to say they couldn't eventually turn things around as Sony did in the PS3 days but it is going to take a LOT to do it.

Yeah, I don't get how there can be excitement for iterative consoles when by definition, they'll always be tethered by the limitations of the original console.

Now, if they got rid of the Xbox One S entirely and made the Xbox One X $299? Yeah, I would have preordered one immediately. lol

It's weird, I think Xbox One X is definitely a better value than the Pro, but I'm just waiting for a next gen console at this point. As long as companies continue to support the original Xbone or PS4, it's hard to get excited.

At least with Switch, there's no other way to play Mario Odyssey or Splatoon 2. You HAVE to buy a Switch if you want those experiences.

Same. This mid-cycle update stuff always felt like a bit of a sham to me. If they have to support original hardware, we're only really going to see resolution bumps to 4K, and for people without 4K sets, like myself because I think upgrading TVs is a waste of money, there is going to be little benefit for spending nearly half a grand on a new console. I view VR the same as well in that I wouldn't want to spend 400 bucks on a peripheral mid-cycle.

This whole generation is just bizarre. Microsoft thought they had the clout to finally do their sneak attack into the living room, and that blew up in their faces (thankfully. I still maintain that if their DRM stuff took root, it would have been disastrous for everyone in the industry). And PS4 seems underbaked as well for what Sony is trying to do with VR. Despite the really long cycle previous gen, this generation just seems a bit rushed and as if it caught everyone flat footed.

I'll only upgrade my consoles until they aren't supported anymore, or games truly start running like crap on them (which if you believe the platform manufacturers, that's not supposed to happen).

As for the Switch, I'll get one when there are more games I want or there is a price drop. I really liked Splatoon, but I played that a ton on the Wii U. Same with Mario Kart. Mario looks awesome, but I'm not going to buy a system for one game. BotW exists on the Wii U, and... I dunno. I also am not a big portable console person anymore.

No way they turn it around like Sony did with the PS3. I just appreciate the hustle and effort. Also I am OK with a mid cycle upgrade if the visuals of other games are a similar upgrade to Forza 7.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I was trying to say. Sooner or later they'll have to move on to completely new hardware.

I sold all my Xbox stuff a long time ago, but I'm pretty happy to see Xbox fans have better options now, especially with things like Xbox backwards compatibility happening. I'd feel much better about buying games in the xbox ecosystem if I knew that there were good options for my games to be enhanced by future hardware. It's just a shame it's not all titles.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

You all are right, just different perspectives....Kevin/Greg to argue from a viewpoint of people who already own Xboxes and are part of the MS ecosystem. MS showed enough stuff to justify continuing owning an Xbox and even for people to consider upgrading to XOX if they need the latest console hardware.

While your approach seems to be more about MS attracting users who are already satisfied with other systems. MS didnt show anything that would force PS/PC or Nintendo fans to move - they would need big exclusives catering to those fanbases for that. Forza 7 looks great but its mostly for the audience that already owns a Xbox to begin with stuff like Blue Dragon Or Lost Odyssey was there to attract other audiences.

Sony doesnt have to worry about anything MS has shown and the Pro is still cheaper. Switch is more or less invincible as long as Nintendo themselves doesnt screw it up - dont think there is much that MS/Sony could offer to hurt Switch and what Nintendo is offering.

Episode 554: An E3 With Too Many Great Games

And holy crap there are a lot of games to be excited about this year (and next, too). Join us, won’t you?

Totally agree with Greg during the Sega talk.

One thing worth noting is that Saturn emulation is actually really good now. I am no expert on these matters, but I have had zero issues playing my 50+ Saturn games using the Mednafen core in Retroarch. Everything looks and plays as it should. So the old story that the Saturn is too difficult to emulate really shouldn't be an excuse for Sega not re-releasing those games, especially when they could use the wizards of M2 to do it.

Didn't he work at the mobile department at SEGA?
To be fair, I don't think the initial Sega games had microtransactions. I don't even know if Sega makes original mobile games anymore... the last one I remembered was Valkyria Chronicles in Japan, and it's deader than dead.

Huh. So the man that ravaged Chrono Cross with an insultingly low, seemingly vendetta-driven review score suddenly wishes it was included on the Mini-SNES?

Want to go back for seconds, do you Greg?

Disgusting.

Phil better come back with a vengeance following his hiatus. I expect a whole slew of new voices to make up for his missed time.

I think Ethan underestimated how much resources it takes to develop 30-60h of a BotW type experience...thats not something you just whip out in a year lol. If they release another new Zelda experience with that much content it will be a new standalone game and 60 bucks - even if it uses the BotW Engine/Assets.
Cross, Trigger, whatever. I forget what order they came in.

You're missing the point that Greg is a monster.

To be fair we established that Greg was a monster years ago..so its nothing new xD

I followed Glixel on Twitter because of the promise of John Davison, but in all honesty, I was disappointed and wound up unsubscribing. They did some neat work, but they also pretty bog-standard crud as well (mediocre listicles, trying to lure the pop culture audience a bit). I also think that quality control is, as a standard practice (EDIT: I'm talking about on gaming news sites in general), pretty low down the priority list, but there were frequently errors in copy that I saw. I flagged a couple to them on Twitter (or maybe the same one a couple of times) thinking they might actually be watching the account, but apparently not.

I should have listened to the podcast, though, because I've always been a fan of Davison and I think he shines in audio.

I just wanted to say that I love this podcast. I don't really care that its not the most informative show about the most recent games. I've have probably been listening since the first episode Shane B was on . I have since gone back to listen to all the episodes multiple times. It's something that I sincerely look forward to every week. I am one of those nerds that has to check out the youtube feed sunday night to get my fix. Thank you CJ, Greg, Phil, Greg F, Mike, Ethan, and even Dormer for contributing to my favorite podcast of all time. Thanks for the good times boys

The new format for Greg's Generation 16 sounds great! I think it suits how people seek out info on YouTube and makes the episodes more digestible.

Yeah I hope so. I've been spending the past few days reorganizing the YT channel and reworking the next game into a standalone episode. I'm hoping to have it out for $3+ patrons next week.

Well, we know a tweet question in advance this week!

That was... what's a more hyperbolic word for "hyperbolic?"

I imagine the man behind the word "retrocity" should be able to think of something.

And speaking of which, the John Davidson of movies has a new teaser trailer for the film adaptation of Phil's favorite book!

The Night Trap documentary sounds interesting. Is it just about the development or does it go into everything around the game?

The game seemed so cool when I read about it in Sega Visions. Looking forward to finally buying a copy.
