Jazz |OT| Straight, No Chaser

I noticed that GAF’s last Jazz OT was dead and buried, so I thought I’d make a new updated one. The kind of Jazz I’m talking about is straight Jazz - improvisation, saxophones, the works. This OT exists in order to provide fellow Gaffers with recommendations for more Jazz. This list will grow as more people recommend their favorite albums and tracks.

If you want to get into Jazz, or just want more, this list is a good place to start.
Pharoah Sanders – You’ve Got to Have Freedom
Pharoah Sanders - Moon Child
Pharoah Sanders - Lament
John Coltrane - My Favorite Things
Dave Brubeck - Take Five
Charles Mingus - Haitian Fight Song
David Becker - Distance Travelled
Bad Plus - Dirty Blonde
Esbjorn Svensson Trio - When God Created The Coffeebreak
Herbie Hancock - Watermelon Man
Herbie Hancock - Hang Up Your Hang Ups
Koop - Forces... Darling
Miles Davis - Someday My Prince Will Come
Roy Hargrove Quintet - I'm Not So Sure
Roy Hargrove Quintet - Strasbourg/st. Denis
Roy Hargrove Quintet - Bring It on Home to Me
Thelonious Monk - Straight no Chaser
Thelonious Monk - Round Midnight
Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers - Moanin'

GAF Recommendations:
Madlib- Shades of Blue
Yesterdays New Quintet- Angels Without Edges
John Coltrane- A Love Supreme

I seriously hope this thread doesn't die.

Anywho...my recommendations:

Madlib- Shades of Blue
220px-MadlibShadesofBluealbumcover.jpg

A good homage to Blue Note records. Madlib adds his own flare to well known jazz tunes from Donald Byrd to Herbie Hancock.

Yesterdays New Quintet- Angels Without Edges
yesterdaysn_angleswit_101b.jpg

A fictional jazz group made up by Madlib. Well worth the listen for those that are into quintet type of jazz sounds of the 50s.

John Coltrane- A Love Supreme
John_Coltrane_-_A_Love_Supreme.jpg

Don't need to say much about this but truly the best jazz record I ever heard.

Donald Byrd- Stepping into Tomorrow
220px-Stepping_into_Tomorrow.jpg

A blend of jazz mix with funk, Donald really delivered quality throughout this record.

Tis a shame these threads rarely have any activity. I bought love supreme last August and didn't really care for it at first but then feel Lin love with it after continued listens.

I've also started listening to Miles Ahead and I'm really feeling it. My Ship and Miles Ahead are so good. Since I've had spotify I've been try to branch away from Miles Davis and John Coltrane, with monk and art blakely.

I'd say my favorite performances are on A Love Supreme (this is his best work, period), Ask The Ages, Speak No Evil, and The Real McCoy. The whole albums are fantastic.
If he was on a love supreme he was brilliant, I've already stated how I've come to love that album. But I will definitely check the other songs out thanks.

Today British singer Andreya Triana releases her latest album Giants. Giants is Andreya's second album. This album's sound is still blues and folk oriented, but the sound differs in choice of instruments. There are more piano chords, hand claps, and background adlibs in this one. All of the instrumentals are pretty decent with some standouts like "Clutterbug". Andreya Triana compliments the production phenomenally. Her voice is as beautiful as ever. Her tone, pitch, and flow are one hundred percent on point in every track. The writing on almost all of the songs are pretty substantial, the only ones I found average were "Heart in My Hands" and "Changing Shapes of Love". The album shifts throughout tone in the album, from tranquil and uplifting most commonly and Andreya perfectly captures these two tones in her voice. Giants is not only a stellar entry in Andreya Triana's discography, but also in the genre.

Notable Tracks: Gold, Clutterbug, and Everything You Had Pt. II

Great OP! I hope this thread lives on, because we do need a dedicated jazz thread.
I recently 'discovered' Antonio Carlos Jobim - Wave:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F016NbHwszE

I really like it a lot. I LOVE bossanova shit like this. I memorised Stan Getz albums so this is very refreshing.

Any cool jazz piano players that are similar to Bill Evans in terms of style?

Another recommendation for this thread is Kamasi Washington's The Epic

3 hours of pure jazz without any chaser. It's probably one of the best albums I've heard this year next to TPAB and Tales from the Land of Milk and Honey.

Amazing album. Can't wait to get it on vinyl.

Never heard of him, but I'll look into his work.

Checking these out now.

Heh, I was joking, I recommended him in my post. Rollins is a giant, he is still playing. 88 years old.

Check out Saxophone Colossus, Tenor Madness, Village Vanguard, Newk's Time.

lol indeed...

Been on a huge Jazz kick lately and looking for some artists to get into besides the usual suspects (Coltrane, Davis, Monk, etc).

Yes! Such an amazing album, absolutely recommended.

Live version of The Epic.

Also, check out their channel. They always have a jazz show going on :).
They play in November in Köln (Cologne) and I'm there. I'm already excited!

The new John McLaughlin album is on fucking fire. Full-on Mahavishnu/Shakti fusion revival.
Didn't know that guy still releases albums, I only know his Mahavishnu stuff. Will def listen to it!

I didn't realize that Christian Scott was on Akua Naru's Black(&Blues) People.

The web of music seems small in some cases. That album has some really great features. It beats The Journey Aflame in that regard.

If you haven't listened to The Miner's Canary I highly recommend it. Jazz, rap, and soul all up in there.

Melody Gardot is amazing. If you enjoy old school Jazz/Lounge type of songs...you'll love this album along with her other work. However, her recent album is hit and miss.

Having a terrible time figuring out the origin of a sax melody stuck in my head.

I'm pretty sure it's 60s/70s era jazz. Somewhere between Garbarek and Rollins?

The notes are roughly:

A G A A# A G F C E F F
G F G G# G F D# C E F F

You can also hear Robert Glasper working with the melody at the beginning of G&B on the piano at :14 here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFB7ZEGzJRk

I know it's probably some obvious jazz standard, but I can't seem to come to the right song. Help!

I am an extremely casual jazz fan but I recommend the group David Murray, Geri Allen, & Terri Lyne Carrington "Power Trio".

Saw them live (it was great) and their album is called Perfection.

Let's try and revive this thread a bit !

Here's my top 10 jazz albums -- linking to my favorite track of said album :

1. Alive (Hiromi Uehara)
2. Kind of Blue (Miles Davis)
3. Rebirth of Cool (DJ Cam Quartet)
4. Herb Alpert Presents Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 (Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66)
5. Scenery (Ryo Fukui)
6. Birth of the Cool (Miles Davis)
7. Take Ten (Paul Desmond)
8. Time Out (Dave Brubeck)
9. Chet Baker Sings (Chet Baker)
10. The Pimp of the Year (SOIL&“PIMP”SESSIONS)

And here's my latest favorite discovery : a late 70s jazz-fusion funk - heavily Hancock feeling - japanese band named Casiopea : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKOekWuzk3o
Tracks aren't in the right order in this video, but if you're looking for one tell me and I'll give you the name !

1. Alive (Hiromi Uehara)

Funny. I just discovered Hiromi recently and my jaw has been on the floor for the last few weeks. She is mind-blowing!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d88GGBH_aNc

Being a huge music and jazz fan I'm kinda embarrassed I haven't come across her before, especially since I'm very familiar with Simon Philip's work. What a phenomenon! Her piano skills are almost inhuman, but at the same time she has an incredible sense of musicality and it's not all flash. I absolutely love discovering musicians who warp my sense of reality!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CY5dTBhRxOA

Honestly I could have made my top 10 with the first 5 choices being albums from Hiromi, you gotta listen to her discography now that you discovered Alive !

Her previous stuff has way more fusion, those are my favorites :
Clair de Lune (Beyond Standard - 2008)

Suite Escapism: Reality (Move: The Trio Project - 2012)
Brand New Day (Move: The Trio Project - 2012)

Summer Rain (Another Mind - 2003)
Dancando No Paraiso (Another Mind - 2003)

Time Out (Time Control - 2007)
Time Travel (Time Control - 2007)

Voice (Voice - 2011)
Delusion (Voice - 2011)

Spark (Spark - 2016)
What Will Be, Will Be (Spark - 2016)

I just realised there's so few studio version of her discography on youtube, I'll try to upload some if I find the time.

I also got surprised the first time I realised it was Simon Philips on the drums, his work on her trio is truly insane !

In my opinion Hiromi is best thing that has happened to jazz post-2000, and her trio albums being the climax of all her past work !
I tried nailing down to the maximum but she has a lot of other works, so don't hesitate to listen outside of the albums I listed !

Thanks for the suggestions. Yeah the new album is great. I agree, Hiromi's trio is the most exciting thing in jazz right now. I hope they do a full US tour soon. The intense interplay between Hiromi's piano and Simon's drums while Jackson lays down the solid groove is just a delight to listen to. They explain their chemistry really well here:

This is an excellent thread. Crossposting my top ten from here:

Ornette Coleman - Free Jazz
Eric Dolphy - Out to Lunch!
Miles Davis/Gil Evans - Porgy & Bess
Charles Mingus - Mingus Mingus Mingus
John Coltrane - Giant Steps
Thelonius Monk - Alone in San Francisco
The Quintet - Jazz at Massey Hall
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
Cannonball Adderley & Bill Evans - Know What I Mean?
Sonny Rollins - Saxophone Colossus

It saddens me to think that the newest record on this list is over sixty years old, but this is what I came up with putting no special effort into ensuring diversity. That's not to say no one's doing anything good; I'm a particularly big fan of Partikel, who put out an incredible album last year, and Dave Holland, whose album Hands has been on continuous rotation for me more or less since it came out.

Surely you Japanese jazz folks have heard the good word about Chihiro Yamanaka, yes?

Only forty posts or so? Bah!

Anyway, here's my (tentative, at least at this point) Top 10 Jazz albums.

20. Oliver Nelson - The Blues and the Abstract Truth
19. Allan Holdsworth - The Sixteen Men of Tain
18. Anthony Braxton-For Alto
17. Eric Dolphy-Out There
16. Ornette Coleman-Free Jazz
15. Miles Davis-Kind of Blue
14. Return To Forever-Light as a Feather
13. Mahavishnu Orchestra - Birds of Fire
12. Out To Lunch!-Eric Dolphy
11. Miles Davis-Miles Smiles
10. Ornette Coleman-The Shape of Jazz To Come
9. Sonny Rollins-Saxophone Colossus
8. Grant Green-Idle Moments
7. Jaco Pastorius-Jaco Pastorius
6. Wayne Shorter-Speak No Evil
5. John Coltrane-Meditations
4. John Coltrane-Giant Steps
3. Charles Mingus-The Black Saint And Sinner Lady
2. John Coltrane-A Love Supreme
1. Pharoah Sanders-Karma

If you need to know my taste, all I know is that I think ELVIN JONES IS GOD. That's all.

This thread is so dead. Let's talk about Japanese Jazz. Do you have any recommendations? I was in an awesome record store tonight in Tokyo, just browsing, and I was pretty overwhelmed looking at the Japanese Jazz.

Are you still in Tokyo? Do you like free jazz? If so, head to Aketa no Mise near Nishi-Okubo. The atmosphere is like nowhere else I've ever been in the world and the acts are always incredible.

The last time I was there I saw a trio of guys that were just wild. After their set I had a little chat with them; it really strained my knowledge of Japanese but it was a great experience.

Be forewarned if you do go that the band may have more people in it than the audience.
