The Silent Hill 2, 3 & 4 PC thread - A guide to a better HD Collection

I recently finished SH2 and now starting SH3, It's kind of jarring at first going from SH2's capped 30fps to SH3's 60fps but its definitely a good change.

What are you guys doing to take care of the screen tearing in SH3??

If you're on Nvidia just force Vsync through the nvidia control panel, worked for me.

This thread is nice but the price of some used copies makes it unreasonably for most. It's still a shame it hasn't made it to GOG or some other digital shop for purchase. These games deserve it.

Is there any difference between the US and EU versions of Silent Hill 3?

Software-wise, no. Retail-wise, you get a soundtrack CD in the US copy, while the EU has none (as far as I'm aware).

anyone else find silent hill 3 jumps from 60 to 30 fps randomly at points? using a 670 btw

30FPS during cutscenes vs. 60FPS during gameplay you mean? Otherwise, if you are referring to during gameplay only, then open areas like the Lakeside Amusement Park can be more demanding, while interior levels like stores and toilets are obviously less demanding.

Used copies on eBay and Amazon are same price as new games nowadays. Unfair and unneeded, but worth it?

I followed the instructions exactly for silent hill 2. The game seems to play fine but if I go to the options menu I get: sh2pc.exe has stopped working.

So I'm trying to fix Silent Hill 4 and am completely lost. Which values exactly do I change to match my resolution? There are multiple width and height values.

Edit: Nevermind I changed them all lol. Can someone help me out with the controls though? I'm trying to get them like the PS2 version, and do I have to run ArtMoney every time I want to play the game like this? It seems to reset if I close it.

It's probably a software problem on your end (as it works for seemingly everyone else). Try to re-install the game, play around with your settings, see if the error occurs in vanilla SH2, etc.

Yes, Artmoney is a memory address program. If you close it, its overriding memory values for SH4 will be lost.

Regarding the controls: Either set up the controls through Xpadder/Pinnacle/JoytoKey or see if the game's options or Sh4config.exe recognizes your gamepad.

I fixed it somehow by messing around with options in settings.ini.

Now my problem is xpadder. Everything works okay with my PS3 controller except the left shoulder button. I set it to left sidestep (d) but it controls the map (m). I tried changing it to the search key (s) just to see what would happen and it worked for 1 minute! and then it reverted right back controlling the map! I might just have to give up using that button. I'm sure I can get by without it.

edit: I also just realized I don't need to use sidestep because i'm gonna select directional control.

Alright, I think I fixed it. The settings in the options menu seemed to be conflicting with xpadder.

Everyone, all brands, can easily get AA to work (along with the lens flares and other effects) with a much simplified version of the trick I posted here: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=41997937&postcount=129

Drop this file: http://we.tl/c9f0aaY6NA to your C:\Program Files (x86)\Konami\Silent Hill 2 (or equivalent) directory.

No need to alt+tab from your game or search your card's id code anymore.

And hopefully, very soon, I'll have some other more exciting thing to announce that will improve your SH2 PC experience. :)

full disclosure: I have yet to read this thread in its entirety but here's my situation and questions:

PC stats are:

AMD Phenom II X4
Radeon HD 5770
Win7 64-bit

I have tried several times to get SH2 and SH3 to run on this PC, including using the CPU affinity settings to lock it to a single core, but both games constantly freeze on me at random times with no rhyme or reason and regardless of what in-game settings I use. For SH2 I gave up and ran it through PCSX2 (mapped L3 +R3 to switch between HW and SW rendering for cutscenes) but SH3 is still all funkdified with the shadows as we all know.

Will the stuff in the OP fix this or do I just need to give up and make it a dual-boot with XP32?

Boy the PC FMV cutscenes not only look horribly stretched they sure look like over-compressed crap.

I mean it's disappointing going from this:

sh2pc2013-02-1114-11-oajj6.png

to that:

1-pcq5jc3.png

(^ and I am not even showing it in stretched form)

Ewwww

If only someone could improve their quality while also making them look right on widescreen monitors...

If only someone could do this:

right? Wouldn't that be awesome?

Drop the data folder to your C:\Program Files (x86)\Konami\Silent Hill 2 (or equivalent) directory and overwrite. :)

Amazing work done by Angular Graphics! If Silent Hill 1, 2 or 3 or 4 will be released digitally, everyone should gift him/her a copy of each :)

I've changed the OP of Silent Hill 2 to include both the new 16:9 FMVs and the AA override fix. All thanks to Angular Graphics! Big round of applause everyone!

It works fine for everyone else, e.g. W7 64bit with AMD Phenom II X3 720 and a AMD 6950 in my case. The issue is on your end.

You should probably check your drivers, make sure that your affinity allocation is correct (only 1 core). Have you tried testing the game with different compatibility settings? Also, are the crashes specific to the games or is it the whole computer? Try to run Speedfan and log the temperature of your PC.

Are Silent Hill 4 cut scenes fixable?

Unfortunately not that I know of. The PC version of SH4 also seems to be missing some post-processing filters - I'd probably recommend playing SH4 on PCSX2 with the widesreen fixes if you have a decent enough computer.

Haha, thanks. You know how long it took me to make this!! Days of researching all 4 released versions of the game, endless experiments with the aspect ratio (I feel stupid now for taking me this long to realize my silly mistakes) and stuff you don't know about involving installing XP on a VM, solving incompatibilities between various versions of avisynth filters and encoding framerates of as low as 0.xx fps :p

The included readme reveals a few surprises regarding additional sources I used, some mild cleaning up of the video that I decided to do, and ultimately deciding to remaster every single one of them, including the SH2 & 3 trailers.

Are these 60FPS like the PS2 ones?

I think you refer to my cutscenes? There's a readme included in the pack where I explain a few things namely that the PS2's FMVs are 29.9x interlaced.

I don't know if and how the PS2 deinterlaces the FMVs, it's possible it doubles their frame rate during that procedure.

My FMVs are sourced from the PS2 version and their framerate was indeed doubled to 59.9x fps during the deinterlacing process, but ultimately I discarded every-other-frame, so they are back to the original 29.9x framerate.

Doesn't work for me, i'm with a 5850 and i'm trying the other fix, but nothing! Works only if i disable aa on startup, maybe i miss something...and i don't understand, the file local.fix is blank ?

No it shouldn't be blank. If it is blank then, naturally, it won't work. Please check its contents with notepad to confirm it's not blank. If it is, redownload it.

I can't test it right now but it's possible if the game crashes that its contents get deleted, perhaps something like that happened to you and it's now blank for you? In that case perhaps you should write-protect it.

Have you tried testing the game with different compatibility settings?

You mean the Windows compatibility mode stuff (XP, XPSP2, XPSP3 etc)? No I haven't messed with that yet. Is there a specific one recommended or just trial and error?

BTW I was talking about my experiences playing the games straight up without any of the hacks (except the patched SH2 exe) so I was soliciting experiences of people with similar rigs who've followed your OP. I will give it another shot this weekend and report back!

I was a little depressed by my poor decision to play SH2 main game at 1080p for my screenshot run rather than 1600p (an error I corrected in Born From Wishes which came out great), but I should start my SH3 screenshot run soon.

Thanks! Now works but only reverb lens, while advanced filters is always not available, is supposed to be in this way ?

No.. it should be available..

Let's see what breaks it.

1) Disable AA, delete the file, start the game and confirm all options are available. Exit.
2) Put back the file, start the game and confirm all options are available. Exit.
3) Enable AA, start the game and confirm all options are available.

It's people like you who make the teams behind shoddy HD re-releases look like incompetent twits. You sir, have done a great thing to improve everyone's enjoyment of these fine games, and are a credit to your gamer uniform.

Finally managed to get SH3 working properly, and I'm blown away. Why does this game look so good! Looks so much better than the HD collection. Now if only I could find a copy of SH2 that wasn't $200 plus. Really wish this was up for digital download.

It's so depressing that it's not. :(

I completely forgot about these games. I mean to play them when I got my nice new computer.

:lol

That's what it goes for new on amazon. Could get it used for $39, but I really don't like to buy used stuff. I've played SH2 to death anyway.

Yeah Konami hates us. :[

I remember it being one of the most requested games GOG or steam at one point.

Konami also hates money.

Which version? I'm kinda interested what my EU digipack with a making of DVD is worth, eventhough I'll never part with it.

BTW, the PS2 version of SH3 still looked amazing when upscaled with the EU launch PS3, although there were some glitches with the cutscenes; Douglas' beard glowed in the dark, and once Heather jumped up and down. =D Too bad I got the yellow light last year.

It was the US version of SH2 directors cut. I've been seeing PC-DVD versions of these games were put out also(EU only?). Would've been nice to have DVD instead of the 5 CD version I got. Takes forever to install too.

I have the 80g PS3 that came out with MGS4. Tried SH2, and James' head would bob up and down, and one of his legs would flicker in and out of existence. Envy those with a launch PS3.

Just got to the Silent Hill portion of SH3. Got used to the keyboard+mouse controls, only thing that bugs me is the camera being on tab. Getting some screen tearing as well. Put Vsync on but it doesn't work on my AMD card. Overall it's been awesome though.

I remember the Squ1zZy resolution patch not working on my Silent Hill 2: Director's Cut years ago...has there been a workaround for that, yet? Maybe I should finally dig the game out and start it for once.

Works for my DC version. Remember to use the fixed.exe.

Hmm, I got SH2 PC last year and now I got a new PC... should I dare to play it again. Maybe.

I was having tons of issues with it last year (crashes etc.) even with all the patches and fixes, but that was Windows Vista.

Remember to set allocated cores to only 1. This is the biggest reason for any stability issues. Hope you get it to work on your W7 PC.

The default control scheme is so fucked up, there's got to be a better way to change it than from the menu, which does not work for me. Is there an INI file with the binds I can edit? I'm using a Logitech controller.

I tried both the fixed.exe and sh2_affinity_shortcut.exe, and still no dice. :( I am unable to do this step:
(Keep in mind: If SH2's original resolution is not set to 640x480 as it normally is, the Respatcher won't change anything)
...because 800 x 600 is the default/lowest resolution available for me.
