It is a dark time for the
Rebellion. Although the Death

Imperial troops have driven the

base and pursued them across
the galaxy.

Evading the dreaded Imperial
Starfleet, a group of freedom
fighters led by Luke Skywalker
has established a new secret
base on the remote ice world
of Hoth.

The evil lord Darth Vader,
obsessed with finding young
Skywalker, has dispatched
thousands of remote probes into

I guess I forgot about ANH ending in a downer note, and all those scenes in Hoth too.

I also figured it could start with a flashback to that. Maybe the crawl would describe events prior to that. That would be a bit of a twist, I guess.

Sucks for you. I liked it, closest in spirit to the OG Trek.

But, i not going to derail this thread. RLM are entitled to their opinions like any other movie "critic." Their opinions are just entertainment to me.

So, any takers on whether Rey losses an arm? I would feel incomplete if something like this doesn't happen.

The crawl will probably be:

1st graf sum up: Rey found Luke and helped defeat the First Order.

2nd graf sum up: The Republic is still in tatters after the Hosnian destruction

3rd graf sum up: First Order regrouping to attack, reporting to Snoke on Skywalker & Rey...

The first scene will be that First Order regrouping scene (think opening of Return of the Jedi on DSII) and after some villainous back n forth, we cut straight to:

Rey handing Luke his father's lightsaber.

hopefully if you have some form of imagination left, you can imagine those scenes. or don't bother, i'm sure Disney will release After A New Hope: A Star Wars Story so you can fill those plot holes.

sorry to be cynical, it's just getting harder and harder to care about this series. it feels like going through the motions. oh no, the force is out of balance again, guess we better kill a new bad guy. it's tough for me to get excited about any possible future. imo this needs to have a massive ESB-level mind-bending twist that pulls me into wanting to see what happens, especially with the new characters.

Star Wars isn't really the place to go seeking/expecting mind bending twists though. Outside of the one time Lucas pulled that big one straight out his ass, they don't really work too well.

Star Wars is mostly straight ahead fairy tale shit. Nothing too twisty.

It'll dedicate a paragraph summing up TFA, and then I imagine the remainder will be dedicated to stuff that could have been in the background of Leia sending Rey off - ie, the New Republic scrambling to respond as the First Order fully invades.

Sure the Resistance managed to destroy Starkiller Base but not before the Republic (or most of it at least) were completely wiped out.

I wouldn't be surprised if TLJ opened with a big battle sequence to show how dire the situation now is and how close they are to securing the dominant position. I think opening the film with a First Order victory would be pretty cool.

If you put all the crawls side by side:

(sorry for the ugly format, just did a quick search)

What stands out when you compare the OT with the PT crawls is how much more personal the OT crawls seem. Part of that is of course the scale - the OT is relatively limited in scope and has the depth of the Indiana Jones movies, where, even though the entire galaxy is at stake, it really is the journey of 3 people, and the PT added all this extra stuff - but sitting in the theater for TFA, seeing that logo pop up for the first time again and realizing "oh wait, I'm actually about to see a new Star Wars movie that's probably going to be good, oh shit", and seeing the crawl start with the simple and plain 'Luke Skywalker has vanished' was pretty amazing.

Simple, to the point, personal and something that immediately gets you excited. People have gone over it more than enough so I won't do it again, but there's no emotional investment at all when you start a new trilogy with some nonsense about the taxation of trade routes. It's about the characters.

So, what I'm trying to say is that I'm guessing the new crawl will continue with the TFA/OT-style. Focus on individuals. Not just the Rebellion or the First Order or the Galactic Senate disbanding or whatever is going on, but Rey, and Kylo, and Luke specifically.

And considering that we know that TLJ will start exactly where TFA ended, and that every movie has started with a shot of spaceships (mostly the evil ones), I agree that we'll start with something else before we move to Rey. Probably Kylo licking his wounds, showing what effect killing his father and losing to Rey had on him, and maybe setting out for revenge (in the same way that Vader in Empire was driven) or to finish his training with Snoke, or something. Maybe immediately going for the rebel base on that planet I forgot the name of, with that being the opening action scene. Although that might bring it too close to Empire's opening.

I just realized it's a good thing I don't write these movies because then we'd really get sloppy OT remakes every single time.

Yea I just figured it would be a more elegant way of handling that scene rather than it being told by someone in traditional flashback.

Well, what was destroyed was the Hosnian system, the Republic's capital. Thus the attack by Starkiller Base was more akin to destroying Brussels and/or Belgium, than destroying the EU outright.

Thing is, in that real world analogy, there's enough autonomy that one could expect the rest of the member states to act of their own accord even while a broader response is planned out, and there would be enough of a decentralised military to at least try fighting back at the borders.

With the Republic, was everything in the Hosnian system? Extra materials suggest the capital moves every few years in the current Republic, to avoid the same kind of over-focus on Coruscant that plagued its predecessor. But does that mean the capacity to establish a provisional/wartime government is still around on other worlds, or is the Republic going to be running around like a headless chicken?

I think Laura Dern's character is going to represent the rest of the republic, which will frequently put her at odds with Leia? I think? I don't actually know, but it seems like setting those two opposite each other as they both try to do the right thing (But in different ways) would make for some interesting drama.

Think Cain vs Adama in Battlestar. Maybe not that harsh.

I dunno. She might not be that at all, too.

Whenever I remember that we're getting Laura Dern in a Star Wars movie I just have to pinch myself. An honest to goodness A-level actress (and probably my first movie crush when I was a kid).

I don't have anything against someone like Sam Jackson, but his inclusion in the prequels always bugged me. He's a bit too much of a comic book version of an actor (which is why he works fine in the Marvel movies for instance - or hell Tarantino makes good use of him as well). He just doesn't fit the tone of what I see as SW movies - it'd be like putting Jim Carrey in one of these.

I'm not trying to say his inclusion ruined the prequels btw. Those movies had other, much bigger problems. But him being there was indicative of the tonal misfire there, for me.

Also, I'm not hating on the guy himself. He had some really good roles here and there over the years. But there are two versions of that guy - one I can take seriously, and one I can't. Mace Windu was the latter.

This post went off on a weird tangent I guess.

Most of the rest aren't really twists at all, the ones that are, are certainly not big ones, and certainly not on the level of size at which you need to continue being interested.

The series has tried to throw "twists & turns" in, but most of them either source back to the one big 'un, or just... sit there.

It's not the most complicated of stories, and probably shouldn't be. Either you're in it for the characters, or you're in it for the Audio/Visual spectacle, or some mixture of both? But if you're in it for the scintillating plotting and the complicated twists, you're probably gonna be underserved.

edit: and yeah, the Death Star does have a theme in Star Wars, and it's almost exactly DUN, Dun dun DUNNNNNNN

(it's in Rogue One twice, too)

It's easier to gleam some basic narrative out of this one, even accounting for the fact we're already familiar with the cast. You can associate all the military stuff together to get the idea of the First Order making an attack. You can associate all of Rey's stuff to get an idea of how her training is progressing. And of course, that final line, which is much more confrontational towards the narrative than, "Chewie, we're home.", which merely implies that they lost the Falcon at some point.

Speaking of that TFA teaser thread, the page linked to is getting into view count breakdowns, which hasn't really been brought up much!

So, anyway, using the YouTube numbers, (because the autoplays in twitter/fb/insta, etc are ridiculously skewed)

official channel - 30mil
movieclips - 6.5mil
zero media - 1.5mil
kinocheck - 2.4mil
filmselect - 1.2mil
Total YouTube views, first week: roughly 41.5mil

TFA's first teaser, to date:
official channel - 23.6mil
movieclips - 77.8mil
Total YouTube views: 101.4mil

Rogue One's first teaser, to date:
official channel - 44.3mil
movieclips - 1.6mil
Total YouTube views: 46mil

If we get a Kylo vs Luke fight in this movie, it's hard to imagine it will end differently than the Obi vs Vader fight in 4. And I don't think they're going to kill of Luke just yet. That'll happen in 9.

So yeah I'm not seeing a Luke Kylo fight really. Can't see Luke wanting to kill Kylo, and not fighting him just ends in death or Kylo turning good (and that's not happening either in this movie). It feels like too big of a confrontation for the second movie in a trilogy.

Edit: Although, thinking about it some more, it's hard to imagine the final confrontation being anything other than Rey vs Kylo. Having Luke there as well might be weird - that's supposed to be Rey's moment.

But there I go again with all my suggestions basically resulting in the story of the OT.

I would suspect, given the Falcon clip, that it may be Kylo with a small escort. Like maybe he has some personal ship (to sell toys and all) with a few fighter craft, while he then lands with some troopers. Him to take on Rey/Luke, the troopers to try and destroy the temple/search it for anything of value.
