But Batman’s hard-boiled nemesis Egghead has stolen one of their unattended time bubbles and taken off to the Legion’s own time period. Looks like Batman has to head to the far-flung future with one group of heroes while Robin stays in the swinging sixties with another. Holy time-travel paradox!
Batwoman #5 By Superstar Marguerite Bennett (July 19th) - In this special one-off issue with art by Stephanie Hans (Angela), learn the truth of what went down between Kate and Safiyah, which led to the future Batwoman having to leave Coryana for what she was sure would be forever!

But has Slade truly shed his villainous past?
Green Arrow #27 By Percy, Campbell (July 19th) - Oliver Queen is a pillar of morality. A champion of ethics. The essence of truth. Or at least he thought so. There he meets the muscleman Atlas, who himself has run afoul of Chagra, the mysterious figure that caused the reality shards that put Forager on this multidimensional trip to begin with. What happens when a Bug of New Genesis teams up with a legendary powerhouse like Atlas? It’s a story we could only call “Atlas Bugged”!
Doom Patrol #7 By Way, Allred (July 26th) - How have you been, Niles Caulder? The Chief is back, and he’s ready to reshape the new Doom Patrol to be just like the old Doom Patrol—a prospect not everyone is happy with. Eliot Rahal (The Paybacks, The Doorman) and Khari Evans (Harley Quinn, Harbinger) bring us a goofy take on the characters (ok, goofier than their inception was at the hands of Jeff “Real Hawkeye” Lemire) as they run into trouble in their first chance at freedom after over 30 years.

Drafted by Neela, the new Timewalker, Faith must join forces with an anthropomorphic dinosaur and the rest of the Valiant heroes as she warps through time to stop a force which threatens to undo time itself. No doubt, this issue will also be filled with moments of “goddammit Aric just use the armor already” and him refusing to. Now the armor has shown up at his home and it’s had enough waiting – what is its motive?

Honestly, they could just polybag it. Sex Criminals has done it with the XXX variants.

Sex Criminals only does that for variants. They still have an appropriate main cover to display for people to see.

Thanks Messi, Feeza, and whoever else helped make the thread.

I'm going to spend like 1/8 of my bonus on comics this month.

Also moving to my one of my favorite neighborhoods on Monday. Never thought I'd be able to afford it, but I found a way, so July is going to be the start of a new life for me. There is also an American comic store two stations away, so I'll check that out and report back!!

I'm sure it'll be disappointing, but I'm really excited for Spider-Men II. I wonder how the cliffhanger will be followed up considering Miles is in the main universe full-time now.

That doesn't negate the polybag as an option. It wouldn't be the first comic to do that for whatever reason.

I know there was a book within my last year of buying physical books that actuslly did come bagged. I think it might have even been a Marvel book.

DC has used the same binding and paper stock on their omnis for the last two years or so. Both very good. The binding is a little bit worse than Marvel omnis and the paper stock is a lot better.

I'm betting 616!Miles is a villain. Funny enough the Spider-Women crossover already did that twist with Gwen's Cindy being a villain IIRC.

It'll probably be something like that but I hope it'll be a little more creative. Heck, Miles just did that himself with his dad being a villain in the Miles/Spider-Gwen crossover.

I wonder if Bendis actually had a plan all those years ago or if he just wrote the ending and hoped he'd figure it out later. Peter's reaction is pretty strong and immediate when he does his Google search.

Curious how Bendis will resolve the two miles being around, I mean if molecule man changed things would Peter even think to look up the original miles morales.

This is one of the worst pieces of garbage. No seriously, I have read many bad comics from Chuck Austen to Rob Liefeld and this is definately up there. Even the bloody covers don't care (issue 5 meantions Coil, yet the person on the cover and issue is Sickle).

Ann Noceti is one of the worst writers. Is she writing anything currently? Just curious lol The sad thing? I am planning on finishing Catwoman after this. It is the only way to read these, to quickly read some of the worst comics all together.

Actually, she did right Inhumans: By Right of Birth which was a pretty good story. It's about the birth of Black Bolt and Medusa's son, Ahura. Really details how fucked Attilan's political system used to be (it was based purely on genetic purity).

It's pretty good. Very pulp spy vibe to it. I like it. But more importantly: Dick is very much still Dick.

I'm gonna get into that top 10 posts if it kills me. Might have to read more than 3 comics a month though.

At present time I'm around 1400 issues into the order, with issues from anywhere between 1969 and 1972 appearing depending on the comic line. The order appears to have gained a little bit of a bloc rhythm. Previously it was an issue of this, an issue of that, maybe a few issue of this one, now it's several issues of Thor, then Fantastic Four, then Hulk, etc. allowing for stories to build up and link together.
I like it, although it does sting when there's a back-to-back run of something like Daredevil (which is still stinking).

I think because it's been 400 issues since the last time I did a thought dump on the run, I'll break my post up in to several smaller ones. That way I won't be text critting the thread, and it gives me a chance to breath!

I've also noticed that as soon as the 70s kicked in Marvel attempted a little more social commentary on the racial situation in America, as well as drug use. After reading some really clean, family issues throughout the 60s it was a bit of a surprise to see Marvel tackle these issues.

Granted none of the 'main characters' use drugs, but even so to have Harry Osbourne (rich kid) fall foul to them was an interesting take. I guess that was a fitting line to introduce drugs in to, I can imagine Spider-man having a younger demographic than some of the other comics simply due to Spider-man being a teen and still in high school.

Roy Thomas

I think it's only fair to write a little bit about Roy Thomas, as it seems to me (just from reading and no researching) that he's the one actually in control of Marvel comics right now. Stan Lee's name has appeared less and less as the writer as the years tick on, and Roy Thomas' name has appeared more. Granted Stan Lee still puts his name down as Editor and proudly 'PRESENTS' a lot of the title, but he no longer seems to be writing anything other than Spider-man.

Roy Thomas on the other hand is doing it all! I don't mind this, as when Roy Thomas is good he is gooooood, but when he's bad, he's boring. Thomas seems to constantly be at an internal fight with himself to make sure his script word count is over 5000 for everything he writes. He likes to write.
I get the impression that he doesn't trust the artists to visually represent what he has in his mind, so he has a lot of narrative boxes outlining situations, the look of places, and so on. Oh and when characters speak... they speak. They speak like Thespians. Even street thugs.

Despite all of that Roy Thomas deserves a lot of credit for somehow being able to keep track and entwine all of these Marvel characters and comic lines together to keep a somewhat consistent MARVEL UNIVERSE going. There have been a few times where there's been a slight mess up, or a callback that wasn't needed, but would you have noticed if you had read the comics as they were paced and released (and not back-to-back binge on a digital platform several decades later)?

Avengers

The Avengers continues to be the backdrop for the Marvel Universe at the moment, although it's not as if it has a lot of competition for that honour other than the Fantastic Four. I've lost track of which version of the Avengers this is now, and I get the feeling Roy Thomas has too as members come and go, sub in and out.
Despite that, and in all honesty it's not a distraction, Avengers has provided some good moments so far (and so odd ones).

Kang has reappeared, he's this sort of time travelling cosmic Dr. Doom type. He lured the Avengers into a trap by capturing Tony Stark, all of which was a cunning plan to pull them into his own timeline so he could do battle against them! In fact, I think it was this event that saw the 'OG Avengers' (Captain America, Thor, Iron Man & Black Panther) say 'No thanks' and leave the Avengers for a bit, letting the subs (Wanda, Quicksilver, Vision & Goliath) take the helm for a while.
I don't blame them, as being taken into another timeline to play a deadly game of human chess against Kang and some Cosmic Chess expert fittingly enough called Grand Master must have been daunting. At one point the Avengers even travelled back in time to fight Hitler as part of this 3 issue story arch.

Oh and Black Knight is now an Avenger - he saved them with his magical time travelling sword. I had forgot all about the Black Knight and his own personal redemption, so this was a good callback in fairness.

The mental headache that is Hank Pym continues to be the most interesting of all the Avengers simply because he's never around and when he does he's messed up. The guy has swapped from Ant-Man, to Giant-Man, to Ant-Man again then GOLIATH to finally Yellowjacket. His switch to Yellowjacket was done as a surprise to fool his wife Janet to see if she still loved him or not.
Now, I have no idea if this was all pre-planned or not, but they've done such a good job at building Hank Pym up as being unstable... and I think I like it! At current time Hank has taken a back seat from the Avengers for his own health and to spend time in his lab (and with his wife). Of course, since Hank has retired so too has Janet who now spends her time shopping with the vast amounts of wealth that was often mentioned.

On the flip side we've had poor old Hawkeye who just can't catch a break, or get noticed, so has went through something of a rebranding. He gave in to his former thief like ways and stole some of the Pym Particles and decided HE WOULD NOW BE GOLIATH! Hawkeye as Goliath is terrible, and funny in equal measures. He constantly stays tall just for the sake of it, and acts like a massive pain in the arse whenever he's given a speech bubble. Again no idea if this is by design or not, but I get the impression that perhaps Hawkeye has some deep rooted insecurities involving size. Or being noticed. Probably being noticed.
I do wonder though why they (Marvel) thought they needed to regimmick Hawkeye like this.

Hawkeye's stint as Goliath has since ended and he's returned as Hawkeye again.

Yes friends of ComicGAF, Hawkeye has returned as Hippeye complete with mini-skirt. Can you guess it's the 70s?
Credit to Roy Thomas though, he did build this up slightly including Hawkeye disappear for a few issues after the realisation he had ran out of Pym Particles and could no longer maintain his erection of height.

I guess the highlight will have been the Kree/Skrull war. I can't imagine what it must have been like to read this as it was released. The callbacks, references and long burn on this story arch is really impressive, with some major long term payoffs to some of the first few Fantastic Four issues dating back to the early 60s!
Rick Jones at this point is now Captain Marvel. Marvel lives in the Negative Zone, but is anchored to reality via Rick Jones. Why Rick Jones? Why. Rick Jones is single handedly the most annoying entity in all of the Marvel Universe that I have met so far. What was the idea behind him? Was he supposed to be the every teen?

But you'll have to wait until the next update to hear more about my thoughts on Avengers and the Kree/Skrull war as well as Daredevil, Spider-Man, Hulk and the Fantastic Four!

Finally...

I knew there was a reason I wasn't too keen on Rick Jones. He reminds me of a certain politician.

Looks like Marvel is indeed adding Superior Spider-Mans numbering to Amazing Spider-Man Legacy ones.

There is much more nuance to Mark Millar. He has integrity. I look forward to his humanitarian efforts.

Lauren Purje's You Might Be An Artist If... was a fun little collection of comics. Adorable art style and hilarious at times. Comments on her pet peeves, anxieties (art or social) and a bunch of other things.
