So my first update went fine, charged my controller for an hour afterwards and turned my console back on. Made my Mii and now I'm downloading the second update.

This is really a buzzkill, but I so badly want to play Nintendoland and Mario Bros U that even this downtime couldn't keep me from being excited.

So, do we think the Wii U has passed 1 million worldwide yet?

425k in USA(Nov)
308 in Japan (opening)
40k in UK (opening)

is 227k for rest of Europe launch and the last 2 weeks, NA in December and rest of the world achievable?

Also, for what it's worth, that 425k number for the US is only for a 7 day period, 18th-24th which is when NPD reporting closed.

The Japanese number is only based on the first two days on the market. Same with the UK number, that's based on 48 hours.

So whatever it's at, it's well beyond those numbers.

I know bud, hence why I put un brackets what the counting period was for those numbers and in the last sentence mentioned about the time since these numbers represented :)

Din't know the NPD was only for 7 days though, thanks for the information!

Wasn't trying to call you out or anything, just pointing out to anybody wondering just how short a time frame those figures actually represent.

Can't you have the update download in the background while playing those games (or otherwise while the system is sleeping after you play)? I thought that was a thing.

So I know people are having trouble registering Wii U stuff for Club Nintendo - I registered Mario & it told me it wasn't eligible for coins. Is that one of those known issues they're going to rectify?

Club nintendo has been busted recently. People posted similar accounts in the club nintendo thread, and I had issues the other day.

I completed a survey that didn't give me coins and I had to do it again. I also just registered a wii that I bought for the family last Christmas and got no coins for it. The site took the code so it's now invalid.

That happened with me for the Wii U. I sent them an email and when I checked Club Nintendo again a few days later, the survey was back on my to do list.

I think that's only for software updates. The hardware updates I was doing didn't seem to allow me to do it.

Finished all my updates system wise for now and giving my Gamepad a good old charge again ready to get playing a little later on.

Wants the largest console games publisher to avoid Nintendo's platforms.
eShop is back up but nothing happened. Yes, Rayman is tomorrow as in December 13th. That's in 20 minutes for me. I hope they will already give us the demo then.
The charts section works now.

Happened to me too. After emailing them, got an answer that it was fixed, the game was finally shown as registered so I completed the survey but still got no points.
So it looks like it's not totally fixed for me as of today.

The Wii U has become my favorite device for playing streaming porn on my HDTV. my 4 year old daughter basically just has to tap the picture of her favorite character on the screen and the next episode of that show plays, no hassle. That's weird.

Never buying another console again, unless...

I have like six other things that go on Youtube, three of them hooked to TVs, and I never use my Wii U for browsing outside of quick in-game stuff because I have an HTPC but it's bugging me that it isn't working. :lol Whenever something is fussing up, I seem to obsess over it.

let me get this straight:
we cannot browse youtube on the browser anymore but we can still use the app?

sounds like google wants to force us to use the app i've already deleted <.<

anyhow got an announcement in my eShop about the VM18 content.
Nintendo must have been really hammered about it if they felt the need of explaining it in the eShop itself...

Regarding Club Nintendo (U.S. Account):

After filling out the same survey for the 3rd time in a week (it took but never added coins and kept getting re-added to my to-do list), I got a little curious and emailed Nintendo. They responded:

"Thanks for writing. I appreciate your contacting us regarding the Coin issue you experienced when registering eligible products via Club Nintendo. We have experienced intermittent issues over the past several days, but are actively working to resolve them. Please be assured that we will make sure you receive Coins for any eligible registrations or surveys taken during this time. You have our most sincere apologies for any inconvenience this matter may have caused you. Thank you for your continued patience."

Last time I logged in, they had just posted a similar message at the top of the website. The actual site is down now, so they might be trying to fix it. Hope that helps someone, because I did a google search before hand and saw a few people complaining but no answers...

This is so fucking irritating! The app is awful and streaming youtube from the browser worked perfectly. It went from working this morning to not working at all now, really hope they update this.

unfortunately if Google wants to force this there's nothing anyone can do about it.

wait I thought this was an issue on several devices, as posted on the previous page, and not just somethign only affecting WiiU, If so then it is not somethign they are doing to force use of the youtube app. Or am I missing something.

Found something the Youtube app did better than the browser. Continuous play!
Search for Buzz lightyear and it will play all the buzz lightyear search results non stop.

Good for my daughter to watch on the TV screen.

I'm not sure how to do continuous nonstop play on the youtube.com browser.

can't someone make a website that hides our browser type from google?

it doesn't work that way.

every single browser sends several informations to the server, among these informations there is one called user agent.

the user agent is used to identify the browser, the hardware and the OS.

ie: this is chrome user agent on a Mac
Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_8_2) AppleWebKit/537.17 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/24.0.1309.0 Safari/537.17

this is firefox

Mozilla/6.0 (Windows NT 6.2; WOW64; rv:16.0.1) Gecko/20121011 Firefox/16.0.1

as every single information send by the browsers (like the url referer), users can actually manipulate the browser and send false data.

there are several plugins for both firefox and chrome that let you do that.
unfortunately we don't have anything like that for the wii u (and unless someone will crack it we'll never have it).

edit:

you can actually use some advanced techniques to avoid this issue.
you could build indeed a website that using curl could load the youtube page and display it to the end user, acting as a proxy.
but building a proxy for youtube would probably put down on his knees any server, and anyhow google could blacklist the proxy server and not serve any page to it.

I just used spoofer-extension to view youtube in Chrome with the Wii U european user agent

Mozilla/5.0 (Nintendo WiiU) AppleWebKit/534.52 (KHTML, like Gecko) NX/2.1.0.8.23 NintendoBrowser/1.1.0.7579.EU

It's loading in the Flash player now (which the Wii U Browser doesn't have). Curiously, with the default Chrome user agent, even though I have html5 enabled (at http://youtube.com/html5) I am still being served the Flash Player on my PC too

Something is screwy on the site

maybe that's how they are blocking it.
serve flash to a browser that does not have flash

edit: thanks for posting the Wii U user agent, i was actually curious to see it, but i didn't ever bother to actually check it out.

The app wouldn't be as bad (but still bad) if it didn't always log me out and want me to re-pair by entering a code. I don't understand how they thought this leanback or whatever app was a good idea. Seems to be the same app they use for a lot of the set top boxes, it's the same as the PS3 one.

The best Youtube app is the tablet enabled Android one. I am NEVER updating that thing.

DCharlie

And even i am moderately surprised
lol, is your nnid going to be DCharlie?

it is indeed - please dogpile me accordingly with friend requests :)

Thoughts after a very short introduction :

short version : i think i had the experience nintendo expected people to have! lol.

- updates were all done and complete in 20 minutes - i was expecting the X hour horror fest with multiple freezes and server drops, but nope. Smooth - 20 minutes is still , i guess, relatively slow but not the horror story i'd read online

- even the Remote Control set up was done in -two- steps - all up and running. Perfect.

- Miiverse is pretty spectacular and , jesus, you fuckers can draw!

- Graphically everything does look very nice and clean, you can see the GPU has something about it

- two hard locks - both in Youtube of all places. A little odd.

- really like the pad - was nice to sit lying in bed this morning and be able to add friends whilst my kid slept.

- Kid absolutely adored Nintendoland (and ultimately Jonnyram's experience with his kid sold me on the unit) - he sat loving the Yoshi fruit game and loved F-zero

- not played MH and Mario yet - maybe tonight.

- not installed yet but already have a mini-"chub on" for Karaoke :)

i probably missed your post about it, but i though you weren't going to get the console at launch because of your family troubles, what made you change your mind?

I sold off a huge chunk of collection and has some spare cash - Jonnyram and a few others had mentioned how much fun the games were with kids and i still have to look after our one kid whilst we await our second one, so i thought "ah sod it". So selling all my US Famicom games pretty much paid for the machine + 2 games + controller.

So - in my warped "budget meff" head this all made sense ! ;)

I'm also going to be wiping out the rest of the collection so that should , theoretically, net me a large buffer of cash and i -still- have a job that pays more than enough. So ... yeah.

Though my time playing it is likely to be limited.

No regrets to be honest, in fact, i'm much more impressed than i expected to be - and now i'm more baffled by nintendo not demoing this stuff during the launch run up (or even now) - it's impossible to get what the hook to the machine is from videos, you need it in your hands to have the "OHHHH!!!" moments.

i agree, hope you'll enjoy the system thanks to off-tv gameplay =D

I've managed to get it to change back to html5 once or twice in Chrome using the default agent, but for some reason it keeps failing to acknowledge my html5 settings for long, and reverts back to Flash Player.

Here's what I get using the default user agent:

Here's what I get using the Wii U user agent (same thing):

thanks for the tests, radiohead...
we can now say for sure that it's indeed a bug.
we'll just have to wait for google to sort this out
