Anyway, get the game on PC if you can. Or play the PS4 with a mouse and keyboard. The gamepad controls are terrible unless you are playing simulator mode (where everyone is forced to use a joystick of some sorts).

Tanks are not like cars. I know that seems like a no shit statement but you generally only want to have one input direction going at once. You can drift the T-50 around corners, so it's definitely something people need to practice.

Also, stock tanks and weak drivers mean poor gear selection/acceleration.

How do I know which airplane to research? Do you first decide on what kind of flying you want to do, then pick the corresponding airplane? Or is it like a shooter FPS, where you unlock "better" airplanes as you go, and it's a good idea to hold some unlock/research points in reserve for those? It's really unclear.

Yeah... I'll be adding more but before 30 minutes ago there wasn't an OT at all. We were having discussions among like 3 different "War Thunder Coming To PS4" threads. I have some schoolwork to do though so those improvements will be later rather than sooner. If you have some suggestions or relevant material, I beg you, throw them at me. I'll edit them in first chance I get.

Drifting is good fun. Shooting them in the ass and circling. It seems the tanks are magnitudes less agile than World of Tanks tanks. When I say turn, I mean standing radial turns traverse speed. Their turning speed is just poop. And they don't have the torque to turn on anything that's not a flat angle. These are just reserve tanks though. So I just need to keep playing.

If you have any relevant information for the OP. PLEASE throw them at me. I don't like the OT as bare as it is. But at least we have a place to talk now.

Planes are sorted by tier (also called "era") 1-5, and also have a BR (Battle Rating) 0 - 8.7 with many different measurements inbetween.

This BR is changed with patches as a way to balance matches. Your three highest BR planes are averaged to figure out what sort of match you should be in. You will generally only ever face planes that are 1.0 full BR higher than your average. Your spread will increase if you have a higher tier airplane, however, like World of Tanks. It makes you eligible to face planes that are one tier higher than yours, so keep your lineup all at the same tier where possible.

You can pick the type of plane you want to fly, and you will generally research all around the tree as you move up.

In general, the Germans and Americans require a type of flying known as "energy" fighting or "boom and zoom". This generally involves diving on a target, firing in a brief window, then flying away to maintain your speed while lining up another attack. The Russians, British, and Japanese all brawl - they like to get into turn fights and don't worry about energy as much. Start with the Russians if you have no idea what you like. They have a very, very generous tree and are forgiving to fly.

You generally unlock better planes as you go, although these planes will have different strengths. The bomber tree is pretty self explanatory - you generally unlock heavier bombers that can carry more to a target area. You generally get more horsepower, better handling, and better guns as you advance up the BR/tier system. There are heavy fighters, which are usually twin engine planes that are used to kill bombers and attack ground targets. You will quickly learn the strengths of weaknesses of these planes by playing a few rounds with them.

You never keep reserve research points. You are always putting them towards something. A fraction of what you earn is also granted to you in "Free XP" that can be converted to research XP via gold currency. You will also earn research towards new parts with your performance in a given plane. You do not earn XP on planes that you haven't used in a round.

What is the "daily double" that I saw someone talked about?

Do player get drawn randomly into a team? I've never played a shooter and I ranked first in 2 battles... I hope I didn't pick a losing side.

Is Germany a good choice for noob?

Should I buy a 4th slot and fill it with plane?

Every day, your first win with each country is a double reward. This is signified by a "2x" underneath the country banner. It resets somewhere around 5PM PST every day. Playing all the countries until you win your first of the day with them is an effective way to move up in the game while not encountering grind. It is essentially playing with a free premium account. It will also expose you to all the differences between the countries and let you invest in the ones you like.

You are not forced to move up in tier or BR unless you want to. It's perfectly fine to "stay a noob" and just fly the early planes if that's what you like. You can still progress down the tree (though higher aircraft earn more research points, the grind gets pretty heavy at tier 4) while doing this.

It is random unless you are in a squad with someone. But the game is balanced by era/tier and the battle rating of your planes.

I would say absolutely not. They require special tactics, rely heavily on crew for things like reload, and their style may not be friendly towards someone using a controller. In later tiers, they get LOTS of cannons on their planes and are capable of incredible burst damage - the highest in the game. Those planes may be more controller friendly, but fair warning that the early planes will be frustrating as they are generally undergunned.

You are 'out' of the match when you have no more planes to use. Domination matches tend to chew through aircraft very fast while at the same time lasting longer than ground strike. They are essentially giant brawls over capture points. You'll want as many aircraft as you can bring for those.

Altitude and airspeed are your weapons, once you learn to keep up your airspeed/altitude and when to dump speed for altitude and vice versa you start doing vastly much better.

You win by carefully picking fights where you can hit the enemy without dumping all your speed and altutide, if you are turning circles at low altitude you should consider your plane already forfeit even if you win the turning battle vs your current enemy.

This is called energy fighting.
altitude = potential energy
airspeed= kinetic energy

You can trade one for the other at will (but it's not a lossless conversion), if you run out of both you are dead as you are a sitting duck. As long as you have more energy than the planes you are fighting against you have a large advantage over them.

Your engine (especially on lower tier planes) can build energy very slowly (as long as you're not at or near your maximum airspeed, then you will lose airspeed faster than your engine can build it).
It is up to you to use your energy as a resource to fight without running low unless it's absolutely neccesary.

This guy (even though he mumbles and has an accent) has amazing guides on the topic of energy fighting, boom and zoom tactics and has videos for each plane and type of plane (fighter, bombers, heavy bombers etc) for each nation.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCamYCPolDw

Once you understand the basic principles of energy fighting a whole new learning curve and world of possibilities and experimenting opens up to you.

After that it becomes a matter of knowing the strenghts and weaknesses and understanding the playstyle of each plane (are they better at climbing than you, do they want to boom and zoom, can you outrun them, can you outrun them if you climb? can you outturn them?) .
Alongside that you will do better by learning the weaknesses of each plane (e.g does the plane have thick armor in the rear making it a better idea to shoot its engines) as well as the deadzones for their gunners (especially in the case of bombers)

The weaknesses/playstyles/armor thickness concepts are no different from what you'd learn in a game like world of tanks so they should not intimidate you. You learn this shit while flying the planes yourself as time goes on.

The concept of energy fighting is the biggest thing that will be very alien to people not used to playing combat flight sims/games but it is not hard to grasp and will turn your flying games from endless senseless turning battles to highly entertaining and highly varied gameplay.

Find a playstyle you enjoy and go from there.
e.g pure energy fighter or maybe boom and zoom (dive bombing and diving on enemy fighters steeply then NOT slowing down and turning but climbing back to altitude asap to have another go) or being a sneaky bomber going after the objectives or a flying fortress fighting it out with enemy heavy fighters

This game has a ton of depth, atmosphere in spades due to the awesome graphics and tons of variety.

The last thing I want to say is that the game requires patience to play properly, you can't just fly headfirst into the swarm and start turning , die respawn and start over.
It's as much about energy , positioning , picking the right targets at the right time and escorting bombers/playing objectives as it is about 420 MLG noscope shootbanging at other planes.

I can't talk about the tank mode as I've only spent a few hours with it and it didn't click with me (I played world of tanks for years though)

That said, getting a Domination game is generally less common than a Ground Strike game. I wouldn't recommend spending any Premium Currency (Eagles) on extra slots unless you just can't help yourself. As you improve, you'll use less planes, and if you ever switch to Realistic Battles (I haven't) it's useless to have a bunch.

I play Arcade exclusively and fly very conservatively because getting shot down sucks... but I know it's not easy to do when you're first starting off. Gotta pick your fights carefully and avoid furballs / useless turning battles - there's no shame in just flying in and fucking right off :) Especially if you're in a plane that's fast for its tier (Italian MC 202, for example).

If you have Premium Currency, buying crew xp points or, in all honesty, premium planes are my suggestion - wait for the deals, some go really cheap. I've only used my currency on planes. The Chaika with cannons (I-53P) is a hilarious troll plane if you're patient and careful. The D.520 is a really pretty premium plane on the British tree.

My recommendation for starting nation is the British. The Hurricanes are absolute beasts / super easy to fly. They have so many machine guns, you can spray all day. That said, they are a little on the slow side, but turn very well. I've never used the Spitfires, but they are not to be trifled with, either.

Another noob semi-joking recommendation: Straight up avoid Russian planes not named Mig 3. The I-15 and I-53 will surprise you in the early games. Of course, with plenty of other noobs, it's fairly even... Experienced players do cruise the low level games. I've been known to get down and dirty in some Tier 0 battles every now and then :)

Add cmart7 if you like, I play an hour or two every day (West Coast, PC).

Me doing this is most carried over World of Tanks knowledge... It's probably all wrong. This is the T-26 Reserve Russian default tank.
  • Rank : Same as Tier
  • Battle Rating : General effectiveness rating. Goes from 1.0 to 8.0
  • Reward : Dunno
  • Mass : Weight of vehicle I'm guessing?
  • Engine Power : Horse Power at Revolutions Per Minute
  • Max Speed : Kilometers Per Hour. 1.6mp/h = 1km/h
  • Maximum Inclination : The amount the turret can aim up or down?
  • Turret Rotation Speed : Degrees Per Second. Out of 360 degrees. (?)
  • Vertical Guidance : Left is how far down turret can aim. Right is how far up it can aim. (?)
  • Hull Armor : In Milimeters. Front. Side. Rear.
  • Turret Armor : In Milimeters. Front. Side. Rear.
  • Armor Penetration : Amount that your gun can penetrate?
  • at distances : amount gun can penetrate at respective distances
  • Reloading Rate : How fast you go pewpewpew
  • Type and specifications of current gun

EDIT : Can someone correct this if you can? Maybe do one for Planes. I'm out of my element on Planes. Gonna try and add something like it to the OP.
