Memories of Murder is in my Top 5 of All-Time but holy shit...The Waling felt like a blatant (bad) copy for the entire time.
So much so that I couldn't even finish it.

You should also watch Castaway on the Moon, Train to Busan and The Handmaiden if you didn't already. Great movies.

Train To Busan was good but felt a little flat compared to everything else I listed. I can see why people love it, though and I'll give it another chance.

I disagree with The Wailing copying MoM. One thing they have in common is the flawless cinematography and maybe the tense atmosphere but on a whole it's not comparable, imo. Cops being idiots is a trope you'll see in almost every korean thriller ever made so that doesn't count, haha. :D

Give Man on High Heels a go. Also Assassination and The Thieves, also Age of Shadows is probably worth a watch, and Daeho: The Last Tiger of Joseon if you want some more Choi Min Sik.
Thanks for the suggestions, I'll try go watch these when I get some money again at the end of the month. :D

Alright, I feel the need to roughly rank the films I've seen over last few weeks/months. My wallet is crying but a new world opened up for me. Am I missing any essential new wave korean films?

<3

GOAT 10/10
The Wailing
The Chaser
Oldboy
Mother
The Host
Memories of Murder

Holy Shit that was awesome 9/10
I Saw The Devil (this one may slip into GOAT territory with more viewings)
The Good, The Bad and The Weird (hilarious and exciting fun!)
The Man From Nowhere (pure action but very emotional!)
A Bittersweet Life (So stylish and perfectly filmed!)
A Dirty Carnival (So epic!)
Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance (Bad Luck – The Movie)
A Tale Of Two Sisters (I love the concept)

Really good 8/10
Lady Vengeance (Need to watch it again, it has been a while)
Joint Security Area (Touching tale about friendship. Good stuff)
Hwayi: A Monster Boy (Cool revenge flick, engaging plot)
A Hard Day (So funny! This one is underrated because people maybe don't know that it's a comedy?)
New World (Well framed and while it's not as epic and emotional as Dirty Carnival it still captured my attention from beginning to end)

Korean actors know their craft. The most obvious lead actors are also my favourites and are a big reason why I love the movies so much.
Give Man on High Heels a go. Also Assassination and The Thieves, also Age of Shadows is probably worth a watch, and Daeho: The Last Tiger of Joseon if you want some more Choi Min Sik.

I'll also recommend Poetry. It's about an older woman starting to lose her memory who enrolls in a poetry class, and then the movie takes a dark turn. I found it pretty touching.

Oh, I forgot to list that, oops. Belongs in the 9/10 category for me for sure! Once I'm done with the thrillers/gangster movies I'l probably try some of the more mellow stuff. I remember watching a funny movie on TV a few years ago with a guy who kidnaps an old dude because he somehow thinks he's linked to an alien invasion or something. Any idea? :O Can't find it but maybe it wasn't even korean.

Oh since you are asking around try Masquerade. It has Lee Byung‑hun's best work imo. Very funny as well.

Failan for a more mellow but ultimately heartbreaking experience.

Edit: Can't recommend this enough

You're right but there were scenes that felt way too samey imo. I really had the feeling like I'm watching a movie made by some dudes who were big fans of Memories of Murder.
I watched my fair share of korean thriller cinema and never had this feeling before.

You should really finish The Wailing. I'm not saying you'll end up loving it but that ending is fucking crazy and it will at least differentiate Memories of Murder for you.

Maybe I'll give it another try. I'm not sure, thankfully there are a lot of good movies out there.

Can't recommend this enough

Absolutely, such an amazing and unique movie.

Watched Castaway On The Moon.

You were right, it's...absolutely exceptional! <3 Dem feels ;_; Uplifting and life-affirming, too. I'm really impressed!

I also watched Save The Green Planet. I had once seen half of it on the national "arthouse" TV station. Oh boy, this one goes places, haha! It's an exhausting experience but a great one. Truly unique!

Alright, got my bluray copy of Love Exposure! I'm probably gonna hang out at home all weekend, so I should have time to watch it on Saturday. Zero expectations, all I know is I really enjoyed Cold Fish.

Sion Sono might be my favorite director but I hated that movie. Its up there with the most disgusting films I've seen.

If your parents have no problems with subtitles, a really misleading and complex plot, blood, weird humor and children screaming nonstop...Yeah! <3

It's not really graphic, just really tense. I think it should be ok.
I am so glad I didnt listen to you people.

What the fuck, Love Exposure. What a bizarre experience lmao.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't thoroughly entertained by it from beginning to end, though. The low budget look took me a bit to get used to but when that happened, I couldn't help getting sucked into the totally fucked up lives of these crazy characters. The length definitely helped with that. Four hours, man. FOUR HOURS?! Time flew.

Now I want to rewatch Cold Fish. Maybe I should watch some more Sion Sono in general, actually. Any other movies from him aside from Love Exposure and Cold Fish you guys would recommend checking out?

Oh and just like with Cold Fish, the song playing during the credits was just amazing. What was the song? Now that I think of it, I loved the use of music in this in general, too.

e: got it, Yura Yura Teikoku - Hollow Me. Not on Spotify, damn it.

e2: OH YEAH, can't forget those over-the-top blood effects. Love that stuff!

e3: close to pulling the trigger on Himizu bluray from Amazon UK and Strange Circus DVD from Amazon US, but I wonder if I need an American PS4 to watch the latter? I do have a PC connected to my TV, but it doesn't have a DVD drive. I guess I could rip it on my brother's PC, though.

I watched Sweet Bean by Naomi Kawase last night and I have to tell you guys, it absolutely destroyed me.

The old lady was so adorable and the way the story unfolded messed with my heart.

It's such a beautifully shot film, I would class it as feel good but I was a tearful mess by the end of it.

I seriously recommend you give it a watch if you can.

In other news, I was walking around Sainsbury's in Swansea a couple of months ago and bumped into The Raid's Gareth Huw Evans. Exchanged a few words with him and went on my way. What I'm trying to say is I'm glad I went to Sainsbury's instead of Tesco that day.

Sorry about the late reply once again.

From the films I watched myself so far I'd certainly recommend:
Strange Circus, which is quite fucked up.
Suicide Club and Noriko's Dinner Table.
Guilty of Romance which is pretty damn brilliant.
Himizu which is depressing.
The Land of Hope, again, very depressing, yet uplifting as well.
Why Don't You Play in Hell? is very fun and a needed change of pace, back to his whacky side.
Tokyo Tribe. Not one of my favourites, but still worth a watch. Might like it more than me.
Love & Peace didn't click with me when I watched it as I was expecting something very different, but it's still a good film. Need to rewatch it one day.

Haven't seen Shinjuku Swan yet, but I'm hoping ThirdWindowFilms picks it up one day...
Really hope I get to see Antiporno one day as well.

Man, what would I give to see Love Exposure again for the first time. Even though it's a 4 hour movie, I think I already saw it 4 times or so. It's such a bizarre and utterly brilliant movie, which at its core is a simple love story, yet it practically is also everything else at the same time.

I think I've read somewhere that the original cut was going to be 6 hours, but not a single movie theater was willing to shot it at this length, so it had to be cut down. The DVD I own only has 2 deleted scenes I think, but one of those is already 10 minutes long.

Same, Love Exposure is a masterpiece and Himizu is a nice film but I had to stop Cold Fish fairly early into the movie. Just gross, horrible stuff.

This is a good movie too.

Have any of you seen Peppermint Candy or Last Life in the Universe? Great films (the former has an amazing musical score, too) but yo... some of the most depressing content. Each film left me in a funk for about a week. Breathless is probably my favorite Korean movie but it's also a downer.

Thanks for the Sion Sono recs! I have a feeling I'll end up buying every single one of his works sooner or later lol.

Dad lent me his Akira Kurosawa collection bluray which has Seven Samurai, Rashomon, Yojimbo and some others. I've never actually seen a Kurosawa movie from beginning to end so I'm pretty excited to check these out, Seven Samurai and Rashomon in particular.

Star with Rashomon. Next watch Yojimbo. And then Seven Samurai.

If you like what you saw, Ikiru, High & Low, Hidden Fortress, Ran, Kagemusha and Throne of Blood are all completely essential. Then there's plenty of other greats like Stray Dog, Red Beard, Sanjuro, Dersu Uzala, Lower Depths... it just goes on and on and on. He's on that Hitchcock level as far as abundance of quality goes.

You can't go wrong with any of those. They are all brilliant.

Try to watch Akahige (Red Beard) as well one day.
It's one that get's forgotten quite often but remains one of my favourites.

Does anyone know a cop movie that was posted on here? I thought it was Korean but may have been Japanese. Was pretty recent and but was an undercover cop I think. Had really good fight scenes... Can't remember much except it was posted on gaf.

Was it New World? It's pretty great, but i don't remember it having particularly stand out fight scenes.

All the others that come to mind right now, are Chinese (Special ID, Flashpoint, etc), though.

Just saw a trailer and discover the existence of this movie : Triple Threat

I mean the director previous film are pretty garbage (the one that i saw). But with this start of martial art cast ? tony jaa and Uwais (the raid dude), Tiger Chen (the dude in man of tai chi), i mean he better not f big time. The trailer look pretty good, but at same time it doesn't show a lot so.

Has anyone seen the Korean movie The Outlaws(2017) / 범죄도시 yet?

This one: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_outlaws_2017

I'm thinking of seeing this later today or the new Bladerunner movie.

Saw it on Saturday. Very enjoyable film. My favorite Korean film of the year after Midnight Runners. If you want a fun enjoyable experience without much complexity then Outlaws is your best bet. But if you are a fan of the original Blade Runner and love slow though provoking films then definitely watch the new Blade Runner.

Has anyone watched a korean film named Ri-eol? I watched It the other day because a friend recomended it and I ended up hating it big time. I'm starting to believe she only told me about it because she has a crush on the lead actor

I haven't actually seen the original blade runner movie lol. Is it essential to watch that first? I love cyberpunk so that's why I want to see 2049.

If you love cyberpunk, you should watch the original anyway to see the film that gave the genre (or at least greatly influenced) its visual style
