Toronto-Age |OT3| Going Off the Rails on a Gravy Train

Finally catching up on the transit debate from last week (Metro Morning has some good interviews on the topic) and it seems just as bad as advertised. Ford didn't want to debate it, but when he did he wanted SUBWAYS SUBWAYS SUBWAYS again, which wasn't the topic which was on the agenda. They were suppose to find revenue for forms of transit (LRT) which had already been decided. But now a few of the councillors get to say 'See, I was for subways AND I was against taxes', even though they're basically contradictory points to take. Now we get to depend on the Province to make the decision for us, which always works well when it comes to transit, right?

I guess this is what we should expect now through next year. The 2014 municipal election campaign is in full swing for the majority of council.

We might be going to Sneaky Disease for the next meetup? You can catch something walking through the doors. Although I will admit the beer is cheap and the nachos are decent.

Kraftwerk hasn't set a date yet right?

Not to my knowledge. The MH meet up did say Victory was good and wouldn't mind going back.

Wherever the battleground takes place is fine with me.

I don't even care anymore whether it's subways, LRT, etc, but that being said, the city needs to pick one thing and stick with it. I don't want to have to switch between 5 different services when travelling from one end of the city to the other. If the decision is LRT, let's run with it, but no more of these half-baked solutions.

Thank you. You'd be better than a lot of councillors. They just don't know when to move on and accept that a transit plan has been decided upon and it's time to figure out how best to deliver on that. City Hall is just twiddling their thumbs right now because no one can work together.

I have no idea, but how many councilors and TTC execs do you think actually ride the transit? I think Andy Byford does, but I would guess he is one of the few.

Just gathering thoughts on the Monster Hunter night last Saturday. Did you guys have fun? I mean it was pretty obvious EM and his wife were out of our league. I think their weapons could solo those 1-2 star monsters easily.

If it's something you guys want to continue I wouldn't mind making it a monthly thing. Suggestions on another spot are welcome. Hopefully I can get my HR up a notch so we can have a challenge fighting stuff. I was hoping for more lurkers honestly.

I think my wife and I were clearly the most skilled Monster Hunters. She knew about Korean pop music and I had pink sunglasses.
What more do you need to play Monster Hunter? (oh wait... you need a copy of the game)

A meet up to play games is a great idea. I just wish it was for games I have/like. No one wants to play wipeout adhoc? Where's the vita love T.O.-GAF?

I'll get my HR up when Kuro learns to kill monsters faster.

It was alright. Though I forgot we could all do this online...

Dammit kave_man! I will be sure to shoot you with my pellets next time! >=[

Incidental or regular commuter use? Not many actually use it for a regular commute. Just a handful, from the folks that I've spoken with. A few others have conducted one-day "observational reviews" that they assume will pass for actual research.

Which sort of begs the question whether our transit services would be any different if a more substantial cadre of councillors had to commute via the TTC.

Exactly. If they had ride public transit everyday it would be Toronto's top priority. But it's hard to make decisions about transit when you are rollin' around in an Escalade.

I actually think – I recall - there is some sort of mandate that at least one or two of the TTC councillors need to be regular TTC riders. Not sure how that is enforced or what, but I do recall something like that in there. It's still a small number.

It still doesn't mean a whole lot. A TTC rider who happens to take a route that commutes from midtown near the subway will have a much different perspective than someone who's stranded in the middle of nowhere.

Hey you'll get no argument from me, I was just pointing out that they have considered this.

I'm a pretty regular Rocket Rider so any new help the TTC gets is fine by me. I'm one who will benefit greatly from the Downtown Relief Line if they ever build the fucking thing.

I just noticed I randomly streetpassed Quadratic last night. So that means you were the guy I went by on the opposite subway that was wearing the Donkey Kong t-shirt? I didn't even recognize you from the other day

I'm now actually curious if there is such a city bylaw, and what those councillor usage of the TTC is.

Yeah! That was me. Generic Asian guy syndrome. Can't blame you.

Remember when Giambrone came under fire for having $3,000 worth of cab fares when he was TTC Chair? I'm sure Stintz is no better though. She can be found on streetcars and subways for photo shoots only. At least Giambrone did make some progress with installing the GPS and stop announcements in vehicle, televisions in stations, station modernization / accessibility improvements (slow as they are going) among other improvements. Stintz's impact has mostly been on the revival of the LRT projects, which were convinced before she was Chair.

Not only the execs avoid the TTC. Some TTC streetcar drivers will actually take the streetcar on their way home, but I see most jump off at Roncesvalles and drive away in their plus sized SUVs.

edit: I sent out a Tweet asking about City Councillors commuting daily by TTC. Only response so far was Gord Perks saying he does commute downtown on the TTC. Other people saying Mary Margaret and Joe Mhevic come in via TTC as well.

"I do". Great answer. He probably lives directly on the subway line, which significantly cuts down on the potential for headaches.

Notes from the Ford Press Conference via Twitter:

Metro Morning ‏@metromorning 48s
Rob Ford says unless the province agrees to give Toronto $100 million per year to host a casino, the deal is dead.

CP24 ‏@CP24 1m
Ford talks about putting a casino in T.O. and his support for it. Says "he's not married to (idea of) casino, I never campaigned on casino."

Mike Layton ‏@m_layton now
Mayor says gambling revenue should go to transit. The only tool he supports. If that's the case, going to be a long time till we get any

Metro Morning
‏@metromorning
The Mayor is listing things he would have paid for with money from the non-existent casino deal. Transit, parks, community housing...

At least we won't have to hear this debate go in circles any more, since there was never any funding to begin with.

Along Bloor, yes. Keele and Dundas West Station are both within Ward 14. It also has multiple streetcar lines, including King, Queen, Roncesvalles, Dundas. So it's quite transit heavy.

I thought Parkdale started under the GO line, and stayed under Dundas. That would put it some distance away from Bloor no? But yeah Parkdale has better transit than most the city, but I thought it would be getting the DRL since it was a "downtown shoulder" that didn't have any subways.

^ lol I love seeing his reactions when he's defeated.

Dundas does 'weird things' in the west end. It actually curves up and intersects Bloor. I live on the other side of High Park, so trust me on this one.

http://www.toronto.ca/wards2000/images/pdf/ward_14.pdf

edit: But yeah, what is traditionally thought of as Parkdale is further south of Bloor, but Ward 14 goes up into what would be considered the tail end of the Junction I guess.

Around 365 metres of subway per year, if you go by the Spadina expansion cost.

Hm. The Eglinton Crostown boring machine (which started tunnelling yesterday, woo!) tunnels at a rate of about 15m/day. So, under Ford's plan, you'd dig a hole, tunnel for just 25 days, then stop until you get the next $100M a year later. This has to be the most inefficient subway strategy I've ever heard.
