I only got around most of the Bond films back in 2012. In the lead up to Skyfall I bought the 50 Anniversary edition, and watched them from one end to another. Admittedly I skipped some of the Roger Moore movies but I'm making up for that now. Next one I'll see is For Your Eyes Only when I feel like it, and then I only got four more movies left.

I actually bought Carte Blanche one time, and it's the only Bond book I have ever bought. Unfortunately I never got around to it, before I sold it welp. If one want to read one book, and one only, which one would you guys recommend?

[edit]
There was a James Bond Jr. cartoon?

I've read precisely one James Bond book, and I can't remember what it was called. Not one that a film had been based off of, that's about all I recall.

Ive read them all during high school. been awhile. but Casino Royale and From Russia with Love were my faves. Goldfinger is really good too.

1. From Russia With Love
2. Goldfinger
3. Casino Royale
4. Goldeneye
5. Dr. No
6. You Only Live Twice
7. Thunderball
8. Skyfall
9. The Spy Who Loved Me
10. The Man with the Golden Gun
11. Live and Let Die
12. Moonraker
13. Quantum of Solace
14. The World is Not Enough
15. Tomorrow Never Dies
16. Die Another Day

I still need to see OHMSS, Diamonds are Forever, For Your Eyes Only, the Dalton films, and Spectre. I haven't seen Octopussy or A View to Kill in such a long time that I don't feel comfortable ranking them.

Kind of iffy on Skyfall's placement. I could easily put it above YOLT and Thunderball, but I just love Connery so much as Bond.

It's been literally decades since I read most of them, but my memory of the Bond books puts Live and Let Die and From Russia With Love fairly high, and Man with the Golden Gun very far below the others. Goldfinger and Thunderball are pretty close to the movies, a couple of the most faithful adaptations along with FRWL.

You Only Live Twice was the oddest one of the bunch, hard to rank it exactly,

I read some of the Gardner novels as they were coming out, but they were enjoyable but forgettable. They had some cringeworthy specifics like Q'ute and Felix Leiter's daughter.

Carte Blanche was riveting from an action standpoint, but pretty dumb overall.

YOLT is probably my first memory of Bond growing up and it will always hold a special place in my heart. I can watch it and appreciate that it's objectively poor in many aspects, but I'd rank it higher than it deserves if ever I could be convinced to put together a ranking.

My list up to this point is like this:

24. Die Another Day
23. A view to a Kill -> which hurts that is that bad, the score is so fucking great.
22. The Man with The Golden Gun
21. Octopussy
20. Moonraker
19. Live and Let Die
18. Diamonds are Forever
17. The Spy who Loved Me
16. Tomorrow Never Dies
15. The World is not Enough
14. Dr. No
13. Spectre
12. For Your Eyes Only
11. Thunderball
10. Quantum of Solace
9. You Only Live Twice
8. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
7. License to Kill
6. Skyfall
5. Goldeneye
4. The Living Daylights
3. Goldfinger
2. From Russia with Love
1. Casino Royale

Yeah, I don't like too much the Moore era. It's funny, but not very appealing to me. For Your Eyes only is pretty good though.

man we still gotta get all of the Bond actors reunited in some sort of fashion. would be cool to see them all together.

Yes it is.

Shame that Connery didnt want to do the 50th celebrations. How amazing would it have been to see all 6 Bond actors together before they inevitably start dying off (Moore is 88 and Connery is 85)?

Shame, would've been really great to see all actors come together for such a special event. I hope that maybe some day they'll manage to get them all together. All six in a row would be absolutely great to see.

They aaaaaaaaaalmost got Connery for the Academy Awards that year, didn't they? Like it was as close as they've ever gotten, but just couldn't close it out.

Brosnan on being fired after DAD:

“I was in the Bahamas, working on a movie called 'After The Sunset' and my agents called me up and said, ‘Negotiations have stopped. [Producers Barbara Broocoli and Michael Wilson] are not quite sure what they want to do. They’ll call you next Thursday’ " the actor says in the book. "I sat in Richard Harris’s house in the Bahamas, and Barbara and Michael were on the line —‘we’re so sorry.’ She was crying, Michael was stoic and he said, ‘You were a great James Bond. Thank you very much,’ and I said, ‘Thank you very much. Goodbye.’ That was it. I was utterly shocked and just kicked to the curb with the way it went down.”

Amy Winehouse was also originally tapped to do the theme song for QoS.

I might have to pick up this book, some interesting shit in here.

They should just say fuck it and use a wax figure for the missing actor, like BBC did for Doctor Who:

I don't remember Tom Baker being black

Edit: thanks Blader for the Brosnan quote. What a shitty way to go. Goldeneye will be forever in my top 3 Bond movies. The rest of his movies ranged from ok to shit but Brosnan was not the problem at all.

Ok. Just started from the beginning with Dr. No

Pretty decent movie. I'm surprised that so many Bond elements are present in the first movie. I would have thought that they would be introduced over time. Obviously there are uncomfortable ethnic stereotypes, but the dialogue is great. I also liked all the little traps the Bond sets up and his detective work.

The island stuff is a bit weak. Dr. No is in the movie for like 5 minutes, and it doesn't really wrap up satisfyingly. Obviously the pacing is gonna be weird in an old movie, but it held my attention throughout.

Such a travesty. Would've been amazing to see a more grounded Bond film like CR with him. I have a feeling he and the movie would've been amazing.

I dont think a CR style film suits him. Craig has a harder look and far more convincing physically, which would be required for the audience to really buy it. I watched Goldeneye and Tomorrow never dies recently, what immediately stood out is that Brosnan could not carry a fight scene, its especially apparent after watching Bourne and Craig's Bond.

They tried to do that with bearded Brosnan in Die Another Day and it did not work. He tries to do the Campy Bond and Gritty Bond at the same time, but the tonal shift is too much

Yeah I mean I'm all for saying Brosnan should have got another shot, but Casino Royale or anything close wouldn't have fit him. What he needed was another Goldeneye caliber movie, maybe just with a little bit less 90's.

Heads up, Best Buy has pretty much all of the Blu-rays on sale for $4/each except for Casino Royale and From Russia With Love.

Free shipping and most of them are still in-stock except for Quantum of Solace and Skyfall.

Sup Bond thread.

Just watched SPECTRE and it was pretty bad. Not Quantum-of-Solace-bad, I don't think, but still not pleasant.

Despite the goofiness of DAD and awfulness of TND, I like Pierce Brosnan a lot. I think I'd rate him #2 behind Connery.

I enjoyed QS quit a lot, maybe even a little bit more than skyfall and Casino Royal being the best. Haven't seen Spectre... yet.

I need to watch Spectre a third time. This time knowing all of its flaws. I can't quite decide if it is worse or better than Skyfall. Casino Royale is the best Craig Bond though, and Quantum of Solace is second.

I posted in the Spectre thread and while I didn't hate it was probably the most disappointing Bond movie I've ever seen(and I've seen them all many times except QoS).

Just seems like the script started with the best intentions but everyone just mailed it in by the end. Bringing back SPECTRE and Blofeld should have been so much more spectacular than this.

I loved Spectre until I read GAF and then went back to see all of the flaws on my second view. That sucked. It's by no means in the same class as Casino Royale or Quantum of Solace.

I thought Spectre was decent the first time I saw it in theaters. Its gone down to below average on a subsequent watch. It has the poorest last 1/3 of any recent Bond film. Skyfall was better but it still wasnt a great film either.

And thats coming from someone who thinks Craig is a fantastic Bond.

Agree

I didn't like Skyfall all that much but Spectre put that all on it's head. It's a masterpiece compared to that trollop. Such a shame. Probably suffered to much from Craig and Mendes being too buddy buddy and nostalgic about Bonds gone by.
