Okay, I'll do this too. Honestly I can't see myself watching 50 movies in a year - I barely watch 10, and I don't really go to theaters unless I'm dragged there. But let's see.

EVOL 100% - 01/50 books | 01/50 movies

Books:
1. Duft der Zeit: Ein philosophischer Essay zur Kunst des Verweilens - Han Byung-chul ★★★★★

Movies:
1. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story ★★

Duft der Zeit: Profound philosophical statement on the modern perception of time, and a call for a more reflective life.

Rogue One: As someone who cannot give two shits about Star Wars but is familiar with the lore, this bored the shit out of me. Props for the ballsy ending though

Finished my first book. Starting my second one. I think it took me 17 days to finish my first book in 2016. 2017 is off to a great start.

Don't get confident, last year I had 4 books by Jan 5th...then came real life :(

Illness is the doctor to whom we pay most heed; to kindness, to knowledge, we make promise only; pain we obey.

I've found the lazy days right after new year the best time of the year to get a head start on movies. Books are more about finding time and not biting off more than you can chew.

Pretty much my only hope is to watch several movies before work starts back up. Two down, 48 to go. If I can get to 5-6 by next weekend, there might be a chance. Once baseball season starts in April, I'm toast.

Books are all about consistency. 30 minutes to an hour a day, more on the weekends. Already down one book, since today was super chill.

Movies
1. The Thing from Another World (1951) - ★★★☆ The original from Howard Hawks, you can see what Carpenter stripped away to make his masterpice.
2. Whiplash (2014) - ★★★ - Never saw this, but caught it on TV and thought the acting was super powerful. Didn't enjoy it per se though.
3. The Big Short (2015) - ★★★★ - Great movie, but the source material, the actuality of it was so devastating to so many.
4. Sweet Home (1989) - ★★★ - Supposedly influenced resident evil series, worth it for the really fun practical effects.
5. The Mist (2007) - ★★ - Ho Hum Stephen King horror. I'd be more interested in how they fought off those mist beasts, but instead we got bickering humans
6. Spectral (2016) - ★★★★ - Netflix original, thought it would be trash... but it was fun. Just don't look up the science
bose-einstein condensate would break down when exposed to heat of humans
. Plus; I could watch anything with James Badge Dale.

Just a recommendation for people, I've just watched "Sing Street" and it's one of the best films I've seen in ages. I don't think I stopped smiling throughout - especially recommended for anyone who was in a band when they were younger.

It's on UK Netflix.

I never seem to be able to do enough movies to get this done.

I actually started counting after briefly popping into the 2016 thread and in four months of 2016 I read 79 books and watched...4 movies.

Always been interested in this challenge, so I'm going to give it a shot this year! Can we count books that we started reading in 2016, but will finish this year?

Yep. Rule of thumb is less than 50% complete when the year begins, but you have to count it somewhere. Might as well be 2017.

Don't expect to make it this year, due to time constraints, but will still keep track, since it's good accountability!

donny2112 - 3/50 books | 7/50 movies

Books:

  1. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Parts 1 & 2 (320 pages) (2016) - ★★★☆☆ (Jan. 4, 2016)
Reads like a fan-fiction. Same lack of vision/scope. Same focus on retelling existing people in new (and sometimes out of character roles).
Time travel is a method to just revist those people/places that the fan is already familiar with, too. On the plus side, the time travel allows certain people to be aware of changes that can make their own sacrifices so much more fulfilling, and it's heartwarming to see them be aware of their impact even if it is in an alternate timeline!
If you can get past the first third, it does get more interesting. Just kind of unbelievable from the characters for the first part, but guess that was needed to setup the rest.
  2. Nighty Nightmare (121 pages) (1987) - ★★★★☆ (Jan. 18, 2016)
Like the Transylvanian story told by Chester in the middle. Always fun to see how Chester's conspriacy theories start looking more and more possible as the story goes along.
  3. The Hobbit (308 pages) (1937) - ★★★★★ (Jan. 19, 2016)
Love the wrapping up Tolkien does at the end of his books. Instead of leaving it up to the imagination, he paints with broad (and sometimes specific) strokes to let you know what happened to the people after the end of the main story. LotR did the same. Wonderful story. Mix of the cartoon and the movie for specifics with the cartoon doing much more to track action for action and word for word with the book for the parts it covers. Good to see the elements of the book in both, though. Wonderful!

Movies:

  1. Bad Moms (2016) - ★★★★☆ (Jan. 1, 2016)
Way too much cussing, but the central theme (
no parents are perfect, even if they act like they are
) is good. They have to go through some really raucous places to get there (
love the club where she's trying to pick up a date and keeps defaulting back to mothering the guys. Mom at heart!
), but the message eventually comes out. Not bad, but still way too much unnecessary cussing.
  2. Underworld: Evolution (2006) - ★★★★☆ (Jan. 8, 2016)
Liked the love story. The evolution part is all a little murky, but then this is a mythos unto itself.
Alexander Corvinus killing himself was completely out of character, though. Spent 800 years living, building up this secret force to watch out for and clean up messes for his two sons, and now that his sons found him out and are trying to take over, "Welp, time for me to die!" Don't think so. Maybe he saved himself at the very end, but that seems exceedingly unlikely. Loved the mutilating end for the two sons, too, by the way.
High quality B-movie without the gratuitous B&B. Nice stuff!
  3. Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (2009) - ★★★☆☆ (Jan. 9, 2016)
Didn't like this one, at first, but it grew on me. Lucian really does a good job carrying the story. (Re)Introduction of some of his high lieutenants is cool, too. They changed the scene
    where Sonja is killed
compared to the original flashbacks, and I liked the original flashbacks better. Oh, well. Still a good origin story, and Viktor continues to make
significant appearances in the third movie of a series where he was killed
    in the first one! :lol
  4. Underworld: Awakening 3D (2006) - ★★☆☆☆ (Jan. 10, 2016)
Selene is not as awesome here as in 1 & 2, and her acting was pretty flat, unfortunately. (-_-) Compare Resident Evil's Alice's feelings toward
the pretend daughter to a clone of Alice from a simulation[/b] to Selene's feelings toward
    her own, actual daughter
    . It's like there's little attachment/caring there. It's all toward
Michael who's supposedly dead instead of to her daughter
. Also, it's really disappointing that they took a strong, independent, awesome Death Dealer that's been a total ace for six centuries and make her into a lost, uncertain, scared person (mostly) who seems to want the assuredness and protection that only
    Michael could've given
her. Come one! You cut out her teeth here! Again, in comparison to RE, thankfully Alice has stayed herself through all the movies. Need the old Selene back!
    [*]Underworld: Blood Wars 3D (2017) - ★★★★☆ (Jan. 11, 2016)
The old Selene is back! :lol She's still just as uncaring about
her daughter as she's left her (at her daughter's supposed request) with no recourse to find her
, but at least she shows a little bit of real emotion about it. Do mean a little, though. Also, the addition of Four from Divergent in Awakening pays dividends here! With the Divergent series (thankfully) put out to pasture, can take the best part of that series and use him in Underworld! Love Selene's new hairstyle,
and coming back from the "dead" to sport it is top notch
    ! Get real closure on
    Michael
    , and now Selene's an
    elder instead of the hunted
. Interesting to see where this goes now. Strong female leads are out in full force with the Northern Coven sporting a good one
    who also becomes an elder
, too! In Divergent, Four always seemed to be pulling up whats-her-name's slack and fixing her really poor decisions. In this one, he's a good complement to Selene, though. Shout out to the casting director for hiring The Woman from Sherlock as the leader of the Eastern Coven. Great choice!
    [*]Hidden Figures (2016) - ★★★★★ (Jan. 19, 2016)
Great, uplifting story. Wonderful movie and great to see early NASA workings. They made
    John Glenn
into possibly more of a linchpin character, but creative license and all. Hope John Glenn got to see some of it before he passed. (-_-)
    [*]Resident Evil: The Final Chapter 3D (2017) - ★★★☆☆ (Jan. 28, 2016)
Loved the 3D in RE: Retribution, but the 3D here was not used to its full effect, at all. Wondering if it was a post-conversion, or they just didn't want to put in the (minor) effort to throw in some cool 3D scenes of stuff flying toward you. For a movie called "The Final Chapter,"
they sure left open the door for more sequels with Alice/Alicia
. As typical, previous series knowledge is not required and really is a detriment, as they once again upturn everything you thought you knew was going on from the last movie. Story continuity is not a big deal with this series outside of maybe the Afterlife -> Retribution transition. Mila's looking good.
Having babies seems to have given her some noticeable breasts this time around.
Action scenes were a less intense on her than past movies, so that may be a sign of her just slowing down over time. Decent watch, but a let down from someone expecting this to be even bigger and better than Afterlife and Retribution. Lack of good 3D didn't earn any favors, either. If this is the last one, gotta say it's been a fun ride!
    [*]

Publication order is probably better. A lot of the impact of New Spring won't really hit unless you're at least a bit familiar with the world.

If you're attempting to read all these books this year, I would strongly recommend not reading them back to back. You will likely get burned out on the series pretty quickly. Read a different book or two in between Wheel of Time novels to stop yourself getting bored of the same thing over and over.

Thanks for the advice. I'll be sure to mix in some light reading/comics every few books to keep myself from going crazy

I finished Kuroko no Basketball, but started the last season when 2017 hit. Counted it this time.

I barely watch anime now, but I'm going to try to stick to real films for the tracking if possible.

As someone without much love or patience for most movies, are the Amazing Spider-man movies worth checking out or should I just skip them and wait for the reboot?
