The pool play for the Sunday finals games were a snore last Evo, not to mention a lot of nobodies getting streamed while the big shots are being eliminated off stream. It was a pretty meh Evo in general tbh.

This year I'll probably tune in into the Sundays finals games just on Sunday for the most part and stick to watching the side game tournaments on Friday and Saturday.

The stream experience in general wasn't great. Remember all the audio issues? And yeah, loads of big names eliminated off stream, which was a huge bummer.

You can't avoid big names being eliminated offstream at EVO. The tournament's fucking huge and there's only so many streams to fit people on.

What did suck about last year though was that I think none (or just very few) of the games finished on Friday, which meant that Friday was basically all pool play and Saturday was full of games that were either playing out their top 8s or grinding down to their top 8s all at the same time. Tons of high-level matches couldn't get stream time because of it.

Brobzoid

how do I slip unnoticed out of a gloryhole booth?
There was an awesome Hong Kong vs. Taiwan (15 vs 15) KoF14 event yesterday. Each player had two lives so needed to be taken down twice.

HK got 4 wins and then ET comes in for Taiwan and starts kicking the crap out of everyone with Angel, Joe and Ryo. Seriously the highest level of play seen with these characters and extremely impressive overall, just relentless offense and mixups. Good luck blocking that Angel.

He brought the score to 4:14 in favor of Taiwan until losing his second life to a player called Benny.

Benny then brings the score all the way to 14:14... at which point they decide to turn it into a 20 vs 20 tournament lol. Unfortunately for HK the next player that comes in for Taiwan (not sure what his name is) gets to the win with the final score being 14: 20. Taiwan wins.

Xiaohai, ET, M' (from Japan), Madkof, Reynald etc. are all confirmed to be attending EVO, can't wait to see how things turn out.

is there a video archive of this somewhere?

Tekken top 8 was moved at the last second from Friday night to Saturday morning. That was the only Friday game.

Yeah sunday didn't even feel all that hype compared to past evos where there is a sea of crowd getting hype. No energy was felt due to the audio issues and clear amount of seats being empty.

Last evo sucked for me.

I stayed in my room and streamed the finals on my phone, then turned on ESPN for the televised SF5 finals. Felt damn good, then I went to the afterparty with a VIP pass.

Fuck, now I'm starting to regret not going to EVO again. :(

Fuck it imma make predictions. These dudes have the best chance of winning Marvel, in order.

You forgot #8 Jay Schneider Viscant.

Been in the hyperbolic time chamber for 6 years training to take the last ever Marvel 3 tournament to complete the circle of poetry.

A huge issue for me is brackets not being updated live. I want to be able to follow the tournament as it's happening, without having to refresh twitter for updates. I wish we could get to the point where smash.gg is updated every single match.

EVO has been dropping the ball for years as a tournament(not so much as a specticale). Maybe this will be a wake up call for them to finally get their shit together.

Thanks so much for this.
I'll definitely try and look for some of these while I'm there!

Thanks a lot! Will run these by the pals.

In case y'all are still reading this and for anyone else I have a couple other spots that are off the beaten path but really good imo

Ping Pang Pong (Gold Coast Casino) - This is a super short trip from Mandalay (2mi maybe?) and without question is the best Chinese restaurant in Las Vegas. They have a fantastic Dim Sum setup and serve all the other good stuff like ribs, good noodle dishes, etc. My personal favorite there is the Wor Wonton Soup but seriously, everything here is amazing.

Market Street Cafe (California Hotel) - This is a Downtown place so a bit of a trip but if you have a car they will validate your parking and save you the $3 lot fee. I really only recommend this place for three dishes. First, from 4pm-10pm they have the best Prime Rib deal in the city. $9.99 gets you a giant cut of prime rib, potato, veggies, unlimited salad, and cherries jubilee...and it's all amazingly good!

The other things worth noting are the graveyard deals. From 11pm-9am (yes really) you can get the best Oxtail soup I've ever tried and a $5 Steak and greens. The steak is nothing special, just cheap as hell, but the Oxtail soup is delightful. I usually get an order of fresh ramen noodles on the side and eat them together. Be warned that there will probably be a BIG line for the Oxtail soup around 11pm-1am but it does slow down after that.

I'm not down with the EVO gloom. I'm counting the days, will be locked inside my room with all my screens going as usual. I can see how EVO has lost some shine due to many other events becoming a bigger deal, but still, EVO is the one big showdown where fucking EVERYBODY shows up, there's still nothing like it.

I thought the arena on finals day was an interesting idea at the time, but, now that we've seen it, thumbs down. The sterile atmosphere just doesn't compare to past EVOs. I wouldn't root for poor ticket sales for finals day, but if they do sell poorly, at least a possible upside is that finals could get back to the ballroom where they belong.

McRibs aught to let someone else take the helm, preferably someone who's more active with the scene like Jebailey.

Who needs Vegas food when you can get a bucket of Popeyes Fried Chicken at a discount?

What? Wizard is many things, you can't claim he isn't active in the community.

I believe KBR has said that he isn't going.

Surprising considering this is the last EVO for MVC3. Could have been potentially the only two-time MVC3 EVO Champ.

I'm really hyped for this EVO as it will be the first one that I'm going to. Always wanted to go to EVO and it's finally becoming a reality.

Okay, "active" isn't the right word. MrWiz is more of a behind-the-scenes guy compared to Jebailey who's front and center with a funny shtick that's very endearing.

Not gonna discredit MrWiz though. Running a event as massive as EVO is a logistics nightmare and probably isn't something Jebailey would touch.

I just learnedI'm going to be in Vegas the week of EVO! I'll be totally free to do whatever until... Friday afternoon. Then I leave.

Any pre-EVO stuff going on?

I mean, not having live updated brackets isn't a reason that EVO's attendance is down.

Heck, if anything,

I'm sure the hype will pick up next week. People are just laying low right now. You can see certain people practicing.

Uh, you know he works for Dreamhack and CEO is moving to a 9,000 person arena next year, right? I think Jebailey absolutely would take something that size on if the opportunity arose.

There's a pre-EVO event on that Thursday, looks like fun. Also it's right next to the Pinball Hall of Fame which is really cool, definitely recommend checking that out.

I've been meaning to make it out to the Pinball Hall of Fame before Evo every year but I keep getting bodied by stuff on Thursday. Maybe I'll make it out this year, especially given that it's relatively close to Mandalay Bay.

I also meant to go to Border Grill last year but the timing didn't really work out. It should be 100x easier this year since I'm staying at Mandalay Bay.

EVO struggling to maintain momentum but people keep attending out of obligation, while other tournies increasingly provide better player experiences yet are unable to obtain the prestige of the de facto leader 🤔

I would kill for a fantasy-themed fighting game. Why is this not a theme? I watched that video Tizoc posted and just thought "Goddamn I want to main a Necromancer"
RIP Testament
.

Love these character designs:

Why do Japanese streams always record at 360p? wtf?

Edit: Daemon Bride has a sick neutral, too! Wall climbing as skeleton spider guy that throws homing fireballs before air dashing in?

We need more gameplay variety in our fighting games.

Edit2: AND Chaos Breaker has assists?!

Yeah, he's not going this year. He's been home in Chile since March or so, I think? He isn't doing any travelling this year, I believe.

Evo really needs a shake-up in regards to how it lays out its games for pools. A lot of crowding problems at the event is caused by not really taking into account which games get folks gathering to watch even during pools. It causes certain areas to become congested and other corners of the venue to be barren. A different layout could alleviate that but I doubt it'll change much if at all.

But this is the fighting game golden age..

I'm still salty they released big games this close to each other. They aren't yearly shooters!
