I second this! Pleeease? Pretty please with a cherry on top?

I really got into Shiren last year, and recorded a video of an in-game demo. There's like six demos, but they're mostly boring walks through towns... that one is crazy enough to more than make up for it though. Disclaimer: the game is usually not that crazy. Thankfully.
That video is pretty awesome. I wasn't even remotely considering this game until this thread. The breadth of options in that video is pretty interesting (setting up fake characters, transforming into enemies, spells from staves, traps, etc). How vast is the breadth of options in the full game? Is there a lot more than that? That's the appealing part for me so far.

Quoting myself from another thread, but I wound up walking into a GS today and snapping up the last (only?) copies of both of these games during my lunch break! :D
congrats. i hope to meet similar luck this weekend when i go out to hunt for my copy here in toronto.

btw, does the game allow you to move the live map to the other screen?

I finally figured out what game Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer reminds me of:

The Dungeon Revealed (a.k.a. Dungeon of Doom) for Macintosh.

Has anyone played this one? Man, I used to love playing this on my neighbor's Macintosh when I was a little kid. Is there any way to play this on PC?

Thanks, and yes. You can toggle the upper screen to show a floor map overlay, a log of recent text (damage dealt, received, experience gain, loot found, etc.), or an overall map progress indicator. I typically leave it on the floor map overlay, which is pretty identical to the one that you can also overlay on the touch screen (where the game plays out).

Sorry, I just finished up for the night.

I completed my first adventure, and made it... 12 floors in, I believe? I was level 10, when I died, and on the WFC Rankings for this month, squeaked in at 72nd place with ~176,000 points. Not too shabby for my first outing!

I was in a mountain cave, escorting a little girl looking for her folks for the past 3 or 4 floors, when I encountered a fire elemental/spirit type thing and what looked like a cannon-wielding pig-orc beastie. Thought to myself, "uh-oh, I better find a narrow corridor to fight them in", when the fire spirit killed the girl, leveled up, and split off another fire spirit! And, of course, just as I reached a corridor, the cannon guy lines up just right and blasts me for 20 damage, also blowing away some of the wall. Fire spirits surrounded me, and between the 3 of them, I didn't stand a chance.

The WFC rankings does add a nice competitive dimension to the whole thing. My only currently ranked adventure is under the name 'Shiren', but once I realized how many there were, I changed it to 'Mej Shiren' (it just barely fit!) So that will be my designation in future adventures.

Cheers folks, and g'night!

This is kind of a hard question to answer. That's a video of gameplay on the 21st floor, and that's about two-thirds of the way through the main dungeon - you're basically playing in the big leagues at that point, and you need every trick you can muster (or an obscene string of good luck) to keep going through there without taking your time to be super-careful. I'll admit that the video shows a good chunk of the neat things you can pull off, and with the new way item drops are weighted in the DS version, some of the neater items won't show up until later on (probably).

But I assure you, even at early levels, you have to be clever with item uses - nearly everything has a time and a place that it can used for maximum effect. Fay's Puzzle Dungeons (available in the starting town, and which in the DS version can be accessed in any order and repeatedly in one trip) show off many of the uses of different items....and if you want to have any hopes in the later levels (let alone the last secret dungeon), you'll need to learn to exploit pretty much every aspect of what's in your inventory.

After typing all that, I'm not sure I answered your question......I'd say that video shows maybe about 40-55% of the item techniques in the game. That may sound like an odd number, but I'm bad at this kind of thing...it may also sound like a disappointing number, but I must assure you, the number of options you have in the game are perfectly suited to the game.

I admit that the item use isn't quite as detailed as it gets in some roguelikes...but personally, I prefer simplicity in the case of these games, and in something like Nethack, I'd really be stumbling blind on every try if I didn't have a wiki for it open in another window. Shiren, on the other hand, manages to keep it's "rules" quite simple and elegant. In Japanese roguelikes, there's generally much less reason for the player's mind to wander, and I prefer them that way (although I still have room in my heart for Western roguelikess...when I'm in the mood for ASCII graphics)

DOUBLE POSTING MADNESS!

As if in answer to my please, IGN has added three videos and a whole gaggle of new screens to their media archives (hooray!). Of course, most people will just look at the FFC: Rings of Fate review instead, but you can't win 'em all.

Naturally, I have comments on each one...

Fay's Puzzle: To a hardcore player, there's a rather humorous amount of hesitation in this video. I'm fairly sure that the "right" way to solve this puzzle (and not risk the enemy attacking and praying he misses) is to take the lower shaft, which will leave to two staffs and a dead end. One of the staffs you get will send the monster flying down the hall, and the other one will cause it to switch places with you (and end up in the dead end), giving you quite a few moves to head for the exit. Fay/Fey/Fei speaks in Olde Englishe now? Well, I suppose that's better than giving him an awkward and potentially embarassing "foreign" accent....

Old Cedar Road: I have to admit, this is a pretty clear picture of what early gameplay is like....I'd say the person playing isn't quite "in the zone", since they make little non-optimal mistakes like talking to the NPC twice, but this is a good approximation of early floors (which may turn a lot of people off, but for many, it is far too late! Mwahahahah, etc). I find it interesting that the reviewer had only encountered a certain woman once before this video - most players will get through that whole subquest by the time they've really started sinking hours into the game. At least in the original version...

Mount Kebri: Rather boring, especially considering how hectic things can get once you hit the mines (you start running into Kid Tanks there, and that family of enemies produces some of the nastiest foes in the game). Maybe they toned it down a bit in the DS version, but this is generally where the ordeal becomes great (to nick a phrase). It's still technically not very deep in the pool, but it's where you tend to find out whether you're on a sustainable run or not.

I have to admit, it was a nice handling of the Spike Bomb...self-destructing enemies can be really nasty.

Overall, these videos accurately depict gameplay, but it's not what I would call the usual gameplay - things get much more interesting after Cedar Road, the mine is usually nowhere near that empty, and the puzzles can be rather mind-expanding (they'd make a good brain training game....almost).

So I doubt these will sell anyone on the game, but I'm not going to find fault with IGN for hosting them. If watching those videos was like how playing the game was for them, I can understand the score they gave the game.

Anyway, I'm thinking of adding "NEED RESCUE" passwords to the op - although probably only for a week or two, and I can't be relied upon to add and remove them faithfully. If a mod finds that they have some extra time on their hand, they can feel free to do whatever they like with the OP.

Or maybe it should go in the online forum, and I should put a link in here....we'll see how much attention this topic generates through the rest of the week.

oh, right

WHEN SUBMITTING A RESCUE REQUEST, STATE THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF YOUR DEATH

(I think this is important - I can't verify the details of the rescue system yet)

You can also put friend codes in this topic, I guess, or boast about who you are on the rankings, and I'll add to the op. If I believe you.

in case it wasn't clear
the fire elemental split everytime they get hit by an explosion, that's why their number keep increasing... because they got hit by the explosion caused by the tank monster
also you said the tank monster did blow away some of the wall... that wasn't in the snes version

I'm currently ranked 60th for this month (I'm assuming having been rescued once halved my final score or something as I only got 220,042 for my effort).

I made it all the way to the 30th level baddy and think I almost had him via a combo of pain sharing and doppleganging, but was finally beat down by the Red Wizards (slowed, sealed, drained 3 levels, and whatever else they could do to me) and then finished off by the now un-doppleganged boss.

I guess telling the circumstances of one's death before a rescue could be a neat way to know how best you can help them (besides reviving them you can also give them 1 item...not sure if that can be a jar filled with items though).

As someone that has never really gotten into an RPG other than Earthbound for SNES and the Paper Mario games, would i be able to play this? Or would you need to have gone through an RPG primer like final fantasy first?
The hype in this thread is getting to me but i've always avoided RPGs and don't really know how they work. So I would hate to buy this just to find out I have no idea what is happening..
any suggestions?

Since this game is different enough I'll bet you can start your schooling right off in this game since it isn't following many of the standard RPG conventions. If you have the time you may want to train up with a free PC game like Nethack, perhaps, to get how hardcore roguelikes work, but I don't think any further console RPG experience than you mentioned there will make much of a difference.

Oh, I don't know. The ASCII graphics and dozens of keyboard commands would scare most folks off. He's better off just jumping straight into Shiren as long as he remembers he's going to die. A lot. That's what makes it fun!

I have to say there is an almost Zen feeling that comes with this game, "Oh well I just lost my +50 Sword, shit happens, time to move on and try again."

Its all about your equipment but at the same time, its all fleeting and even your best items WILL eventually be lost.

so well i already made a few runtrough... the first few floor seems a little easier (there seem to be less enemies around and i also found quite a big number of healing pots) but the latest one are definitely harder than what i remember (the dragon seems more buffed and the piggo weren't there and they didn't hit that hard) the new enemies rules,i already hate the golem guy and the flying bird (he ruined one of my clone staff :( ) i don't understand what does the hidden eye monster...
oh also i'm coming to tortfeasor rescue but if you already die at floor 17 you don't stand a chance with this game

Just bought this, and it turns out to be a remake of the SNES game! I wasn't expecting that, heh. I don't mind it at all since this is the first time Shiren is in english, but I already beat this a while ago...

The new features are kinda cool I suppose.

Nope, not listed yet. I loved how when I searched for "Shiren" at circuit City's page it didn't simply not find anything for "Shiren" but it CORRECTED my search to "Shrine" since I clearly mis-typed.

Gamestop dood looked at me crazy when I said "I'd like to get Shiren" and looked at his magical Gamestop PC and couldn't find the game listed :(. I ended up geting Phantom Hourglass instead.

I guess I'll order Shiren off of Amazon! On the positive side, my local Target had a bunch of Black Onyx DSs in stock :D

If you'll only stop playing Bulder's Gate 2, then you'll find time to finish these 8 fushigino games at least 8 times over!

You have to ask for "Mystery Dungeon". They didn't know what the heck "Shiren" was when I went in either.

Hmm, this thread and those articles on Gamesetwatch have made me quite interested in the roguelike genre. Now, is this pretty much the (or one of the) best console/handheld roguelike I'll be able to find?

Yeah, it is. There are other quality localized roguelikes but most of them would be hard to find now. Shiren's definitely the way to go.

Finally got my copy today. I knew it was the Super Fami version all along but I was still kinda surprised when I started up the game and was like "Oh. It's the SNES one!" I accidentally killed a blind girl. I failed in saving another little girl due to tons of teleport traps. I got blown up by a tank. It was awesome.

So is EB the best option to pick this up in Canada? Or are people having luck elsewhere? (or is it non-existant period)

Amazon.ca ships in "1-4 weeks", Amazon.com won't ship this to Canada, and I'm going to Japan for 3 months on Tuesday (don't want to play this one in Japanese).

I tried both Unemployed Ninja and Pokemon Dungeon and didn't like either, after seeing the reviews I'm guessing I should stay away from this one too.

I gotta say, i'm enjoying this one muuuch more than Izuna.
There's just more to this one, what with NPCs out in the levels with you, having partners (I just end up using them as meat shields) and the whole rescue system.

Just rescued some random person on Wifi (some guy named Cloud) from level 8 and got a nice reward. I also started stockpiling jars of holding for more warehouse space. Phew this game is addicting.

and when you say review you mean ign crying the game is too hard for them to swallow?

anyway i had an awesome run,i made tons of experience killing gedoro and had the strongest shield, then i found a big monster house on floor 28... i read a scroll of confusion and try to race to the end, some death angel get out of the confusion since they move 2 times in a turn but i'm equipped with the ghost sickle! they die in 2 hit, then when i'm really near the end a dragon has the really really bad idea of killing the monster near him,the fact that he ranked up mean he got out of confusion and now he can hit me as rank 2 dragon can hit you with flame as long as they are in the same room! i'm 2 steps away from the exit,i have 45 hp and i think "well even if the dragon breath i still get to live with 5 hp"... i proceed to walk to the exit then a tigers throw a bunny at me for 5 damage and the dragon finish me clean
arggghhhh :/
