At least thirteen dead as van hits crowds in Barcelona

Hope there are no deaths. Scary stuff.

Europe is one of the safest regions in the world though. I can't really think of many other areas that are safer then your average EU country. We should do more to prevent things like this, but not going to Europe out of fear is a bit strange.

Yeah, Europe is basically as safe as it gets.

I'm watching tve 24h and they haven't said anything about terrorism yet.
Yeah, me too.
The only information available is that they are blocking everything around to prevent them escape and that there were loud "explosion" like noises (which for all we know could come from the houses). Both efe and TVE (spanish public tv) haven't said anything like that as of 17:46

Jesus, such a ridiculous streak. What's worse is that this type of attack requires no real prep and can be acted upon almost instantly, meaning that anti terror orgs will have a hell of a time preventing these from happening.

Knowing Spanish TV, they probably just heard someone on the street say they saw two people run away, one with a gun (which is always what people say after an attack/potential attack) and then reported it straight away as fact.

This is crazy. Was just texting with one of my best friends who lives there. Happened to be walking on Ramblas. He said he just started running when he heard screams and people were running towards him. Now the area is on lockdown cause police is still looking for 1 guy.

AFP via BBC: police source confirm it as a terrorist attack.
Reuters quoting local media say two armed men have entered a restaurant after van crash.

Hearing it all on BBC news channel.

Man, the world is so small.

Was there just this last weekend. It's a highly trafficked stretch. There's a wide pedestrian path in the center with a one-way road and sidewalk on both sides (lined with shops/restaurants). Hopefully no one was seriously hurt.

tve24h is so shit. They are giving no insight at all, haven't mentioned deaths, gunshots or the guys in the restaurant yet...

Police and security services stop more of these than you might think across the EU but it's usually done with low-key interventions. Still a blow to morale every time one slips through.

Wait for the inevitable 'how could the authorities not see this coming?' spiel even though we 'see' dozens coming at any given time and do the best we can to prioritize the avalanche of intelligence.

Just saw a very graphic video on Twitter. You can see several injuries, a few children among them, lying on the ground not moving. This is sickening...

TV3 (catalan TV) says there were gunshots before entering the restaurant.

Terrible news, but why is this also happening in spain of all places?

We were in alert 4 of terrorism attack. Especially if it's an Islamic attack, it makes sense. Also lots of tourists.
