Not sure why they are trying to get into the crowded console/PC market where they lack expertise instead of focusing even more on the mobile market.

Uhh... and the mobile gaming market isn't crowded?

They're just acting as a publishing arm mainly for indies to give them more exposure on platforms as written in the OP.

Tiny Metal looks like an interesting Advanced Wars clone. Last Standard and Merkava Avalanche look uninteresting so far and Deemo is just Deemo, now in VR.

Isn't mobile the worst crowded market? Crowded with "free" games?
I guess that is why they release on Switch, the only market that is not crowded
yet
.
Also, some games work better on PC/consoles and some on mobile. Better to release to the right market, even if it's more crowded.

My favourite bizarre collaboration is Sony Pictures, Sega and Nintendo logos all appearing on splash screens for Astro Boy: Omega Factor.

Not too dissimilar to Microsoft then.

Honestly, calling them a mess for this is pretty stupid.

So if another company also has branches that go in opposite directions then it becomes ok? Yeah that's really clever.

The most blatant evidence of what a mess Sony is it's how Vita was mismanaged, Japanese and European branches were willing to(and did) support it while the American one didn't even give it E3 space 3 months after its release, and they were all part of the Playstation branch...

If MS and Sony make money despite this think how much more money they could do with a better coordination.

Just to be clear i'm not saying that this is a bad news, for gamers more games the better.

It's interesting that they are put so much into gaming while their film & TV division continues to die on the vine.

I think this year saw better fortunes due to their Marvel partnership involving Spider-Man. We'll see how it does long-term.

Kaz was a big part of Playstation and runs Sony, so in a way, it's not surprising that they see the value in gaming.

Amusing that after all the calls for Nintendo to go third party because doomed, both Sony and Microsoft will have published on the Switch as third parties first.

They were both technically on the N64 but those were technicalities.

Sony Imagesoft fell under Sony Music and released on other platforms.

This sounds like a return if Imagesoft under a different name.

Nothing to do with SIE, a different beast.

they weren't
They were. Once PlayStation launched SME canceled all their unreleased SFC games, including the fully complete Jerry Boy 2. They also immediately ceased Mega CD and PCE CD-ROM2 publishing.

The only Sony division that kept multiplatform support going was Psygnosis (under SCE) somehow for awhile on Saturn and N64. SME went PSX only though and they shut down their western branch (Imagesoft) with it’s resources being folded into SCEA and it’s development team becoming 989 Studios.

Actually, didn't Sony Music own Tenchu long ago before it being passed onto Activision and then FROM Software?
Yes, Tenchu was originally a SME property. Others include Solstice/Equinox, Skyblazer, Extra Innings, Jerry Boy/Smartball, Kileak the Blood, Kowlooon’s Gate and Speed Power Gunbike. They also handled a lot of licensed games like Robocop, Hook or Mickey Mania.

SIE does own gaming rights to the property, they're even in the copyrights for the 3DS game.

Not just that, oh my fucking god, they actually credit two actual SIE employees in the credits:

It’s also already on iOS, Android, Vita and Switch so it’s a known quantity. Rayark has also sort of made a name for themselves in the rhythm genre between this, Cytus and Voez.

I'm really excited about this push, and I'm *really* excited for Tiny Metal. I'm craving an Advance Wars game, and it's hard to believe that this is coming before Wargroove. Out of nowhere!

(Still really excited about Wargroove.)

With the growth of game development environments, high quality game development has become possible even in small scale environments, and the evolution of digital publishing has made it easier to distribute developed titles to users worldwide. On the other hand, with a mixed bag of titles overflowing the market, there are also situations where interesting titles are buried without being noticed.

At Unties, we dig up the masterpieces buried in those situations, and support them so that more users notice and pick them up. We spread information about excellent games and sell titles for multiple platforms.
This is really good its a win for everyone really.

This isn't completely unheard of actually. Sony Online Entertainment was a division of Sony Pictures before it got booted over to Sony Interactive Entertainment.

Mind, SIE sold off the division after getting it.
One of the many mistakes SIE made IMO
