Just beat the second boss. That scene where a bunch of machines were having
sex (or at least trying to) before fusing. I first thought they were going to attack in that fused form but instead they gave birth to an Android which then gave birth to itself (or something like that) which was so WTF.
And this is just the start!

What does this game and RE7 have in common.

When you fucking health is low they damn well make sure you know the whole time. Like come on games I know I'm about to die but for the next little while I don't need half the screen to be red or the game to be black and white with an anoying beebing the whole time!!!

Automata is very consistent in blending its UI as an actual part of the game world.

But you're an android....if you're an android and you are near death, i imagine that your vision, etc....would be in the same state as the onscreen character.

I'm in the middle of route C, and all I can say is wow.. what a game. I thought after playing routes A and B that the game was very good, but nothing special. I'm hooked now and relieved that the main routes aren't completely a Groundhog Day scenario.

How about the level-down potions? Is using those to lower your level, then treating the second hardest colosseum as a bloody palace type thing a viable idea?

I know debug mode also exists, but would much prefer a mode/colosseum I could enter and have waves thrown at me.

The final challenge in the three DLC areas is actually super fun, and pretty much the sole legitimate challenge in the entire game. I highly recommend doing them.

Just realized that when you die you don't even regain the health pods you had before that point, so these save points aren't even save points. Now that I have none left, I'm stuck in a death spiral against final boss.

Casually fuck this game hard.

Lower the difficulty then lol

Alternatively, you can load your latest save and stock up before this fight. A similar thing happened to me where I underestimated how much curatives I should've bought before that fight. Although I don't remember if you can do it in Route B as easily, I didn't die, so I never needed to find out.

You think after how much of a pain this game has been for me I'm going to bother with side quests? No, absolute main line.

That rant before was for end of route B / was level 31.

Tell me about it. Instead of taking another hiatus I might just rush through the last three endings to trade this game in while it still has value... Kinda feeling some Crash Bandicoot :P

Beginning of route C at level 37. All the enemies are level ~50 and taking forever to go down. I'm underlevelled, aren't I?

So just picked this up again after shelving it for Persona. Up to the forest zone and hit a brick wall at the boss there so have gone round doing side quests for now.

Any tips for a newcomer, anything I should definitely do/not do?

- Here's a list of recommended sidequests: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost...ostcount=18814

- Don't be cheap, and stock up and get lots of curatives. There's a boss fight that occurs later in Route A (The one Merchandise is complaining about actually) that can be more difficult than it needs to be if you're not prepared.
- Actually remember to fuse chips, it helps save so much space!
- Experiment with the pod programs, as they're a lot more fun than the standard laser.

- There's two extra pods, one is in the desert, another is in the (minor spoilers) Flooded City, found through fishing anywhere in the area. Said city is also where your sidequests get cut off for Route A (Although they're not permanently missable, and some even show up in Route B and onwards), so keep that in mind and complete them before that point.

- You can sell anything that says it can be exchanged for money, including the Machine Cores. Don't keep them. The only exception is the Desert Rose, as those are used for a sidequest.
- Personally, I don't recommend using the Overclock (Witch Time) chip if you come across it, the game's more fun/challenging without it. It also ruins the music!
- Actually make use of the fact that you have 3 loadouts for your chips. I for one had an all-around loadout, one that was focused first and foremost on movement speed and exp gain, and then the last one can be for whatever fits your fancy, like a 9S-centric (Hacking) loadout.

The second major boss battle is what I'd answer with if we're talking in a more general sense, but of course that depends on why it's not working for you (and what you're looking for from the game) specifically.

What is considered a "major" boss battle?

I'm primarily having issues with navigation. I keep getting lost trying to find my way through areas (even on my second or third time through), and the map isn't helpful. Combat also isn't quite clicking for me, although it's certainly passable.

If it helps it's easier to navigate when you rotate the map to a top down orientation.

Also fast travel unlocks after a certain time.

The game's world isn't that big, so trust me, you'll memorize how to get from place to place soon without the map. In the meantime, use the map markers if you aren't already, in order to make sure you aren't lost. If you're doing sidequests or something and that's frustrating you, refrain from doing them until you unlock fast travel.

As for deciding whether or not you should put it down, finish the entire game unless you absolutely despise the gameplay imho. After all, if you can't stand the combat and what not, there's not much point in forcing yourself. Well, unless you're into the story, then just put it on Easy/Auto Mode if ya want lol

I just wrapped up the first completion of the game, and ended up enjoying it way more than I was expecting to.

Offensive Heal and Deadly Heal kinda broke the balance of the game just a little bit, but I'm not complaining. I don't think I had to use a single curative since the opening section.

I beat the game this weekend and I'd say your two points are the game's biggest weaknesses.

With that said, the narrative of this game is unlike anything I've experienced playing a video game and had all sorts of emotions running through. It's a stunning game, and it's bad qualities are easily forgivable for the game's storytelling.

This is one of the most beautiful gaming experiences I've ever had.

I can't believe people haven't made a bigger deal about the transparent black bars during cutscenes. It's one of the most baffling design decisions this year. At least The Order and Evil Within didn't obscure part of the cutscene and committed to an aspect ratio. Other than that and the terrible PC port, I'm having an okay time

If you've gone through any of the Nier topics it's brought up fairly regularly in each. I personally didn't mind it, as the only thing it really affects is the ability to take clear screenshots.

Just started today! Got through the desert, and that was strange...

Few quick questions. First, do enemies scale? Is there any benefit or negative aspect to grinding if I'm not usually good at these types of games and am primarily playing just for the story? Secondly, I know little about the story except you sort of have to "play through" a few times to get new endings and eventually the real ending. Is there any way to screw myself out of this? Lastly, how important/good are the side quests? Are they all good or are some filler content?

They scale, but the bosses don't I believe. Doing too many of the sidequests and what not may inadvertently make the boss fights too easy for you if you're a high enough level, but honestly, it's pretty hard not to eventually become overpowered unless you're playing in Hard mode or something, due to some of the chips being too powerful.

For the story, there are five 5 main routes, Routes A-E. It's pretty straightforward, and no, you cannot screw yourself out of an ending.

The sidequests are pretty good, here's a list of recommended ones that go into more detail: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost...ostcount=18814

One thing here is that the side quests might at time feel a bit like a chore, like you might find yourself surrounded with quest markers like an Ubi game. Do them anyway at your pace because all of them feature a satisfactory ending, like the quest itself might not be so great but what happens when you finish it is absolutely worth it.
