I neglected upgrading weapons/chip capacity because hacking got me comfortable, and now I'm regretting it, haha.

I dunno about grinding, I never needed to. Feel free to do a sidequest or two if you're that outclassed though.

Speaking of, why did it seem that his name was censored whenever 9S mentioned him in the side quest?

Yep... Lol, I love how the side quests expand on things lol

He's kind of a bitch no matter the level lol. But yeah, upgrade chips and stick up on healing items. I'd say just heal spam your way through that fight.

Regarding the censor bit, there is an interesting theory that you can actually also just replace it with taro as well to see his views on game developers who just spout their views at you (cough kojima cough) and the groupies who mindlessly follow what he says.

A bit of self-deprecating humour.

Wasn't too outbalanced, it was just the boss, really.
Though I spent about thirty minutes in the Forest Kingdom, and I feel it was worth it.

Yeeeah, that one. You're right, heal abuse is one way to go about it. Felt a little cheap, but if the sentiment rings with others, then I'm sure it's fine. Sadly didn't have any more room for chips at that point, but the first thing I did after beating it was buy the chip slots I was missing.

Music question: has anyone seen a solution to the absence of all mixes on the original soundtrack? Nier's music is marvelous, of course, but as people mentioned in the first thread, it's a shame that often, only one version of a particular song is present on the OST. Not having the crazed vocal versions of The Emerging Will boss tracks, or the (superior) vocal-less versions of Memories of the Sandstorm and The Replicated City really hurt it. I guess you can still find them on youtube for the time being, but are there any more lasting compilations people have made? No follow-up on the official goods released thus far, of course.

Alien Manifestation just keeps growing on me - especially when I noticed it's actually the first proper stage music at the very beginning. Amazing use of "endgame" music out of order to greater effect.

And yes, the 3-minute mark makes the whole track.

Man, route c is a slog. Got halfway to my destination while infected, couldn't make it up to where I needed to while constantly being knocked down by enemies in my weakened state and die, and the last place it had let me save was the bunker. It sucks this stopped being fun.

That particular part isn't really supposed to be fun tho.

You should try to avoid the crater in the middle, go left past it

It's just not a good sequence. The game could have the character struggle without taking away most control from me. It reminds me of carrying around an egg in Monster Hunter.

So now I have to get back out of the bunker, do the flight sequence over again, then fight back to where the virus kicks in...and pray I go the right way this time towards the least amount of resistance and frustration.

I shut the game off for the night. I'll get back to it tomorrow.

I got through that part on my first try, and in 3 goes later for trophies never failed it, even purposefully reaching the bridge just so the counter would reach 100%
quicker for that ending.

Honestly not sure how people mess it up. I went through the crater, fell all the way to the bottom, climbed the ladder, waited at the top of the ladder for the next stun to wear off before jumping out and then made it all the way to the bridge first try. Like there is a lot of room for error.

I think I passed the half-way point in route B. Part of me wants to rush it to complete the story but part of me wants to take the time to do more side quests. I mean, if I didn't do the Jean Paul quest in B that boss fight wouldn't have been as good as it was.

It's possible to get stuck in the crater if you go directly straight across to try and jump out instead of going around up the slopes, because the stun likes to trigger when you try and double jump. The first time I did this I actually got lucky when an enemy attack knocked me clear out of the crater after being stuck for like a full minute.

It took me a few tries to get to the bridge. It's easy to mess up because at that point in the game you're used to hang gliding everywhere.

For myself, going right of the sewers will get you stuck, center will get you ganged up by machines, and going left around the buildings was the safest.

Yeah, I recall people in the other thread saying "I didn't have any trouble," as if that somehow negated the trouble that so many people had. It's the only part of the game I disliked. Hard games are great, and high-concept is great (I would never say any of Nier's daring tracks are pretentious or obnoxious, and I think people who complained about Agro being hard to control in Colossus are crazy), but this one just doesn't fly. Plodding along already accomplishes the narrative aim, without the infuriating falls.

It doesn't negate it, people are just pointing out why they didn't have as much trouble. Anyways, that part is a great example of how it can be difficult to do something that is meant to purposely irritate the player. They're putting you in 2B's shoes, as everything has just gone to shit. Bunker is gone, and everyone is dead. She's separated from 9S. Additionally, you see her slowly succumb to the virus, seeing her various functions get disabled one by one, to the point where both your screen goes gray, as well as it becoming harder to hear. Realistically, you sense that these are her final moments. I found it quite effective in how it helped to illustrate the pain she was in. I liked that Taro did that. But at the same time, moments like that are admittedly tricky, because as we know, if you are unfortunate enough to get horribly lost, or god forbid die multiple times, it of course takes away from that depressing moment, and maybe even makes you not a give a shit at all. Instead of you feeling for 2B, you instead start to get pissed off that you can't complete that part to begin with.Generally speaking, I don't mind moments where the game does stuff like that to you,but at the same time, there's this unspoken rule that said moment can't last too long or be too difficult, otherwise don't be surprised when players hate it. I felt that the whole virus thing was ultimately a moment that did not last too long, hence why I liked it, but I can admittedly see why it was more difficult for others, thereby tainting their experience as a result.

I was creating a title called NIER Gestalt/Replicant when this title was called Versus XIII but because it was very likely that our games would release around the same time, I was thinking “oh man, Versus is an action RPG right? It would suck if the release dates were close to each other.” NIER ended up releasing without having to worry about Versus XIII but then, when I was creating Drakengard 3 I thought “it would suck if they release close to our release,” and it was the same again when we were creating NieR: Automata this time too. Looking back, I feel like I was trapped by the curse of Versus for about 10 years.

Really puts things into perspective lmao.

Quick question regarding quests and playthroughs:

Without spoiling anything, I just went through the big battle against Adam and rescued 9S. I was postponing some quests, like the Parade Escort or the last fighting-monk-robot, since they were too hard for me (lvl 30 at the moment), but then I saw that they had disappeared. All my quests have disappeared, in fact. I assume that they will come back in the second playthrough, right? Will I keep my level and progression in those quests when I start playing with 9S? Or will I have to do all the previous steps to reach the point where I was at.

Also, on a related note, how much game do you think I still have left, based on what I just said?

Some of them will come up back in the 2nd playthrough. But there are certain quests, basically stuff that only 2B would be doing (Like any Operator 6O related sidequests) won't be available. That said, fear not, as no sidequest is permanently missable.

You will keep your level, progression, chips, pod programs, items, etc. in your upcoming playthroughs.

As for how far you are, you're like 60% done with Route A.

Oh yes, I'm in complete agreement about the sensation they were attempting to invoke and was generally very impressed by it...except for the fact that you had to make a tricky double-jump across a pit in the interval between the virus shocking you, and if you failed, this wonderful, clever visual storytelling trick was instead drowned out by profound annoyance that takes you out of the very moment they've worked so hard to create. Frustration in the difficulty in walking is daring and wonderful...frustration because you can't advance as the story wants you to was evidence of an actual design error. Not that this has any bearing on Nier being one of my favorite games ever.

One of the neat things about seeing the reception for this game is how it either leaves people with a loss for words for a bit, or when they eventually write something or do a video for it, the way I've seen people talk about Automata has me all like... Damn, y'all really loved this game huh lmao

Just finished ending A. Kinda out of the blue, to be honest. One moment I was escaping the factory, next I was fighting Eve. I still have a ton of questions!

What was going on with the weird self-destructing religion?
What happened with Pascal and his village?
What were the brothers, exactly?
What's up with A2?
Why did she kill the "king" in the castle?
What's up with the aliens?
Where's Emil?
Why are Devola and Popola in this game?
How can I upgrade my weapons beyond level 3?

etc.

Hopefully most of them will be answered in the other routes. If I didn't know that this game has different endings and multiple playthroughs are required to unlock them, I'd be very pissed off :P

Just noticed something on the Options menu that I don't know if it was there before. What's "Voice Changer"?

Hmmm, interesting. Route C spoilers While Pascal's Village is fine while playing as A2, it's completely destroyed by the time 9S wakes up. Hypothesis, in a fit of psychotic madness Pascal razes the village to the ground, laughing in glee as he shoots down the ones who trusted him with their lives. No one was spared, not even the women and children.

So, I started Route B and O-M-G, this thing is amazing. The combat is even more fluid than in Route A! The use of hacking makes it a lot more tactical, since I try to position enemies in a way that the explosion will hit the most of them. Also, the Spear of the Usurper is a beast. And I'm loving the golden enemies that start appearing even in early areas.

The weird stuff is starting to happen, too. And that's great. Route A feels like a prologue now. I can't wait for the revelations to start pouring in... and to finish a few sidequests I left undone in Route A. I'm coming for you, Servo!
