In case you are starving for some Switch discussion, CJ and I talked about it last night:
http://backinmyplay.com/bimp-gaiden-nintendo-switch-announcement/

Ok this was a good discussion - you brought up some interesting point...especially the idea local coop via streaming didnt cross my mind - this would be kinda rad. Just shows how much we still dont know about the details of the Switch.

PS. And yeah i see Ethan spending at least 1K at launch - cant blame him though.

Congrats on 10 years! Thank you so much for doing this show every week without fail all this time! It always makes my Monday better.

Thank you CJ, Stewy, and Phil for being at this so long. Thank you Ethan for stepping in as the fourth chair recently. Thank you Mike Phillips for bringing an edge to the show. Thank you Greg Ford for being the nicest guy in the world. Thank you Dormer for ultimately bringing us Dormerbot.

Thank you Player One Podcast for being the best show on the internet.

There are few, if any, gaming podcasts that treat their listeners as equals and with respect. There are few, if any, gaming podcasts that realize that world of video games does not have to be so serious all the time.

But most of all, there are few, if any, gaming podcasts that show up week after week, month after month, year after year, for a decade.

Here's to ten more!

It was a good fill-in conversation, but I think CJ went into pure fan fantasy a couple of times (especially "what about multiple pack-ins?")

Also, six hours would be great. Not sure who said that, but it would be.. but I'm skeptical that's in the realm of possibility.

Yeah I was clearly talking out of my ass when I said multiple pack-ins. That's pretty unlikely - though maybe we'll see something like a Nintendoland or Wii Play where a pack-in has multiple mini-games. But I'm gonna stick with Mario Kart 8.5 being the perfect pack-in.

As for 6 hours - probably a pipe dream. The Switch will likely be between 3-4 hours even just based on how battery life goes when you play a graphically intensive game on an iPhone or iPad mini. It may even depend on how each game is optimized for battery.

Congrats guys! I've only been listening for maybe 3 of the last 10 years, but your show is one of the few podcasts that I never miss. Thanks for all the laughs.

Congrats guys, I have listened for 3-4 years only, but its grown to become one of my absolute favorite podcasts overall. Love the general enthusiasm of all the participants, love that discussion includes arguments and disagreements, and love that you cover not only the newest and greatest, but also older stuff like virtual console or 3D classics or Mega Drive or whatever makes sense. Keep up the good work! Kevin needs to stop saying how a game is awesome ten times over though, and get to the argument instead. But when it comes enthusiasm, he is just as good as the rest.

Ah, this one was an enjoyable listen.

Congrats on 10 years! I've only been listening for about 4 years, but it quickly became my favorite commute podcast. And one I'm sure to never miss!

Totally agree, got to be better at explaining my thoughts better. Especially when I am super excited and blast through a 16 hour game in 3 days :)

Thanks!

Haha, your enthusiasm is greatly appreciated though, and I can see why that sometimes can be distracting. The Switch-talk you did with CJ was really great btw, combining arguments and enthusiasm perfectly imo.

Congrats on 10 years.

I remember what I was doing the first time I listened to the podcast. I was out for a walk late at night and I got lost because I was new to the city I was currently living in. I can't remember the episode anymore, but I've probably listened to the entirety of the show twice. For whatever it is worth, my favorite episode is still the Christmas/New Years show where it started with Phil reading all the titles to the Garfield books. "Garfield sits AROUND the house" is engrained in my mind.

Here's to another ten!

Greg doubling down on the whole idea that you need to pre-order from Amazon to get 20% about 2 minutes after Phil debunked that notion. I do not understand the consistent impassioned defense of pre-ordering on this podcast.

pre ordering is bad because so many games get released busted. just wait a few days then order from amazon. normally the 20% last the first week or so anyway

The 20 percent isnt even that good on ps stuff i realized. Because sony doesnt charge us canadians tax on digital.

Last weekend i bought tf 2 digital for 7 more dollars than the 'great' amazon discount from prime.

I wanted the convenience to boot up tf2 anytime i want. I realized lately im Tired of swapping discs and if its a game im never going to sell bc mp, than digital just makes sense.

But yeah, you get 2 weeks.

Greg preorders a lot of games that dont see much play. Thats the vibe i get from listining anyways. I cant say i havent been guilty of falling into the e3 preorder deal a few times on bad games i forgot to cancel.

Is the Amazon 20% thing available on amazon.ca?

Sorry, but Phil didn't "debunk" anything. The 20% deal during E3, as far as I remember, is for anyone. The 20% off deal you and Phil were referring to is for Prime members as far as I know. That's $80 a year.

I didn't intend to sound like I was doubling down on anything. I'm just not going to make the assumption that everyone is willing to pay for a Prime membership.

Same thing goes for the digital/physical media discussion. I've been pretty vocal about the fact that I prefer physical media on the show, so while it's great to know that ordering digital not much more expensive than physical, it really has very little weight when I'm deciding how to spend my money.

My main point is that there is absolutely a benefit to preordering games. Like most conversations when it comes to gaming, this topic often gets lost in hyperbole about the evil game industry and giving them interest-free loans. What I'm arguing is that different things are important to different people. Whether it's convenience, whether it's a discount, whether it's preorder bonuses....one size does not fit all.

Speaking of pre-orders, I'm holding myself from pre-ordering this:

mega-drive-tectoy.jpg

megadrivecontrole.jpg

It's a Mega Drive re-release by Tectoy. Unfortunately not the original chips but a similar circuit design (it's not emulation). Composite out only, but it does have an SD card slot with 20 games pre-loaded as well as a cartridge slot. It's coming out next year for about $100.

I preorder because:

1- I frequently get $10 back in addition to the 20% off each game (Best Buy Gamer Club Unlocked). Preorder tchotchkes are sometimes a nice bonus.
2- I like playing games when everyone on podcasts and message boards is still talking about them..
3- I like to form my own opinions about games. I frequently end up disagreeing with reviews so it doesn't make any sense to base my purchases on them.

This trend of people trying to tell other people how to spend their money is pretty annoying to be honest.

Only just recently for Prime members (as in, September).

Prior to that, preorder deals (E3/Black Friday) were the only way to get games for less than list... and if you're not a regular Amazon user, Prime savings might not really be enough to make a membership worthwhile.

Yeah, if you know you are going to buy a game, there's no reason NOT to preorder it because it's so cheap.

I got BF1 and Titanfall 2 for 50 CAD (which I guess is like 35 USD?) because I preordered them on Amazon.

Heck, it makes me wonder if the margins on games are huge because retailers are regularly taking 20 dollar "losses" from people who preorder.

Preorder at $50 makes sense. Usually, sell back in the first couple of weeks is $35-40. Basically paying a $15 fee to try out a game and then returning makes sense if you are willing to eat the cost.

The opposite I think. I get the impression that margins on games are pretty small but Amazon/Best Buy use them as loss leaders to get you into the store/onto the site and buying more stuff. They also want you to trade in games to them and get store credit, the margins on used games are huge.

I kinda want one...

Hey, if you still want one after the reviews come out I'd be happy to help.

I dug out my original Mega Drive and it's actually Canadian. :p Tectoy stuff used to be more expensive so all my games were imports from a local shop.

It came with a game called "Ren & Stimpy", looks like it's a Canadian show.

Great discussion of the Nes Mini guys, and I loved to hear all the sad stories about people not getting one. Makes you wonder if its worth it for Nintendo to waste all that goodwill just to make it the "hot item" for Black Friday.

Can't we all just agree that Nintendo is simply adding to the nostalgia factor with the NES mini by bringing back the supply shortages that plagued the console during its lifecycle?

(I mean, how was Nintendo to know how popular Super Mario Bros. 2 would be?)

My uncle works at Nintendo. He said there are chip shortages.

When Ethan talked about how he is having the Nintendo Swtich experience right now I could see a Polygon article with that title.

I wonder what the guys think about Japanese mobile games that use the gacha system, since I count myself as not being interested in any way in a 10 dollar iOS Mario game (in part because of the cost), but for some reason I can throw away two dollars a week on Final Fantasy Record Keeper for the remote chance of getting a good loot drop.

They're two different models of course, one is a one off standalone game and the other is essentially games as service, but there's something about that model that convinces me to spend small amounts of money where I wouldn't otherwise with mobile games.
