Remember:

DO NOT just post the title of the movie you wratched. It isn't conducive at all to the kind of discussion & communication we want to engender here, because it tells us nothing of you, the movie, the impact of the latter on the former. Post scores, descriptions, essays, poems, gifs, hashtags, whatever provides you the best outlet for personal expression, you unique little digital snowflake. Also, Marvel movies are mostly shit. - icarus-daedelus

Even if Casey Affleck is a prick, I can't deny that this performance was Oscar-worthy. He really sold the movie and the main character he was portraying.

I enjoyed that the movie was slow, and very much rooted in reality. Sometimes stories don't get neatly tied up, everything resolved. Sometimes characters don't get development during a time span of two weeks. But everyone interacted like adults. Like real human beings, not caricatures.

It wasn't as good as Moonlight and La La Land, but very powerful, none the less.

Get Out is genre filmmaking at its finest. Wickedly terrifying for most of its runtime, Peele's debut is accomplished in its tension and detailed twisted world that feels all too real at points. The script is remarkably tight, using every minute to its full advantage. Missing even thirty seconds of this film for a quick bathroom would be a huge disservice to how it expertly builds the lore and atmosphere subtly and constantly. It's also quite funny, but not overtly so, allowing the audience to really buy into the reality of the somewhat ridiculous situations.

Kaluuya continues his excellent body of work as our lead, giving a nuanced portrayal of a role that could easily come off as a blank slate. The entire cast really is excellent, with every character getting a few memorable moments. Howery in particular is fantastic in a comic relief role that allows him to punctuate some of the film's best moments. Abels' score is appropriately off-kilter, serving the film's more mundane elements well and its lesser ones fantastically.

The most important element though is what Get Out is saying about our world today. Modern mainstream horror has sadly avoided making statements for the sake of cheap thrills. Get Out has those thrills, but they certainly aren't cheap. This film has a bite to it that's rarely seen in this genre nowadays. Peele is loudly proclaiming the horror inherent in racism in any form through this film. It's fitting that its final moment of dread comes from something unrelated to the more unrealistic aspects of the story. Get Out is a stunning debut and one of the best horror films in years, leaving one with a lot to ponder about a variety of social topics. Perhaps most importantly, it is the rare Hollywood release that simply must be seen to be believed.

Top 5 New Watches of Feb:

1: The Lone Wolf and Club series - Just wonderfully pulpy samurai action (though I liked 2/ 3 the most and found the 4th one pretty not so great)
2: Lady Snowblood - Beautifully shot and paced.
3: Moonlight - A solid Best Picture. Wonderfully character driven and haunting in a lot of ways.
4: John Wick Chapter 2 - Knows what it is and has a blast with it.

I actually think that's it for new watches last month, did a lot of rewatches of movies and Lone Wolf was 6 flicks so I did alright.

Steve McQueen: The Man & Le Mans
I started February with a doc about Paul Newman's racing career and ended it with a doc on McQueen's passion for racing. It's a pretty interesting juxtaposition: whereas Newman seemed to be a more grounded guy and looked at racing as just the most fun hobby/career he had, McQueen seemed a bit more existentially flailing and saw racing as the thing that gave him the most meaning (his opportunities to derive spiritual satisfaction out of acting and moviemaking seemed more few and far between). The fact that it may have contributed to his death is a real kicker on top of it all.

Anyway. It's an interesting doc in its own right, drawing on a ton of apparently once-lost behind-the-scenes footage of McQueen's Le Mans film and some audio recordings of McQueen speaking from Mexico where he was receiving treatment for the cancer that would shortly kill him. The production on Le Mans looked a complete clusterfuck, yet now I'm really intrigued to watch the movie itself despite its middling reception. From the anecdotes, you get the sense that McQueen was a real lonely guy -- seemingly of his own design -- and it's a shame his passion project was wrapped up in such a crazed, disastrous production. Hell of a story, at least.

I just watched Seven Samurai and Green Room, both films which I enjoyed quite a great amount!

I liked Seven Samurai a great deal more than Rashomon, mostly because of its scale and the fact that it's much more bombastic than the latter's low key affair. It does take an eternity to get going, but it's never really boring and the extended siege sequence at the end is great even if the bandits are really really really dumb.

Also Kurosawa's weird portrayal of women continues in full force. "Back in the days" were some weird times.

As for Green Room, I thought it was simple and well directed. I saw Blue Ruin and enjoyed it a lot, but my opinion of it decreased over time because it didn't leave an impact at all. But Green Room is my kind of movie, punk rock aesthetic with crazy antics in an ultra gory thriller fighting Nazis. I did read in an interview that the director didn't indulge in the violence as much as he could have and that made me sad because the violence, if used sparingly, punches like a rocket. Great stuff.

Also, I just wished they cooled it with the use of euphemisms and stating things to other character who doesn't need an explanation. I get it was supposed to be alienating but there were a few scenes where I had no idea what was going on besides VIOLENCE, which is good enough I suppose.

Either way, I enjoyed both films quite a lot :)

I'm planning on watching Logan with a small number of friends (we're keeping it rather quiet this time around so we're not inviting too many people) on Saturday, just to have the entirety of Friday to enjoy the Switch hehehehehe

Most valuable rewatch: Network

Not mean enough to be memorable: The Greasy Strangler

Tentatively, I will be working through the rest of my Criterion backlog for a while (yes, I still have some), but it'll be nice to get back to something without a major theme.

Don't hold your breath for any kind of progressive feminist Kurosawa film.

And for that matter, be forewarned -- assuming you get around to it -- that The Hidden Fortress features perhaps the all-time worst performance by an actress, ever.

I can't get enough of that movie. Definitely feel pretty connected to it, since the plot is a lot of what I went through when I was a music major in college. The screaming, chair throwing, insults, and self-doubt in that film aren't too far from the truth at a lot of institutes. And man, that final sequence.

Last night I watched Goodfellas for the first time. Probably the only Scorsese movie I haven't seen, and one of those films that was a "you will never be allowed to see that" thing when I was growing up. This movie does a good job of adding humanity to people who are downright despicable, creating some really memorable characters in the process. Camera work in this was great as well. Pretty sure most have seen that Copa Cabana shot a couple times, but man there's some brilliant shots here that were probably the height of style when this came out. Very good movie, though I don't think I would rank it above Godfather.

Only thing that bugged me was Ray Liotta's makeup. Most other characters looked natural, but Liotta seemed to have this heavy eyeliner and ultra-defined cheeks that gave him this odd marionette look for a lot of the movie. Maybe it's just the unique shape of his face, but it took a bit to get used to when most other cast members didn't share the look.

I'll definitely watch again. I feel like I would have worshipped this movie when I was 16.

I'm not expecting it or even holding it against his work much. It's just really really interesting.

Vertigo (1958)

Been on a Hitchcock kick lately saw Rope (1948) then Rear Window (1954). Vertigo is quite simply, a masterpiece in thrillers and mysteries. Great twist and had me on the edge of my seat by the end of it. I truly wish James Stewart and Hitchcock collabed more as this is one of Stewarts. Also the score is absolutely stunning.

Get out
Great movie. Loved the "race relations" angle. Loved everything about it. It had funny moments but never forced them. The laughs were natural and earned. The directing expertly drew me in and creeped the hell out of me at times. Eagerly looking forward to Peele's next work.

The Great Wall
Decent action movie. Rather germane but enjoyed the Chinese culture angle on an otherwise predictable script. Liked that it wasn't another "white savior" resolution.

The Founder
Loved it. Really shows what kind of person (morally and ethically) it takes to build that kind of empire. Toes must be stepped on, if it were.

Hidden Figures
Another damn good movie. Inspiring but also sombering in making us acknowledge the racist bullshit they faced. I can't believe I had never heard of these amazing women before.

This Is Spinal Tap (1984) - this was just added to Netflix and I realized that despite absolutely loving Reiner's The Princess Bride (it's my favorite movie), I hadn't watched this yet. So I fired this up. Very funny. Christopher Guest is a riot. Michael McKean (Lenny from Happy Days/Laverne & Shirley!) is great. Cameos by Dana Carvey and Billy Crystal as mime waiters. This is like the opposite movie of Sing Street, where it's amusing as hell as the band sort of disintegrates into absurdist levels of humor.

4 / 5

Watched Neon Demon last night, well that was something alright. A visually compelling movie with a solid tone throughout where the meandering pace and bite-sized story was enjoyable but falls short overall. A few memorable scenes and lines are executed very well with an ending that capped the film off perfectly. Overall I would recommend a single watch through and wouldn't replay a second time around though.

EDIT:

1. What's your favorite Movie?
Changes with my mood, from Cool Hand Luke to 2001. I'm a diverse snowflake I guess.

2. Who's your favorite director?
Flip a coin between Mann or Cameron.

3. Who are your favorite actors/actresses?
Oldman, Spacey, Ruffalo, Theron, Foster, Green

4. Favorite Genre(s)?
Sci-Fi, Heist, Thriller

5. What's your favorite performance in film?
Ledger as the Joker

I'll try to write something more detailed about it by the end of the week, but in the interest of expediency and me not wanting to go to bed too late tonight, the ranks of the Miami Vice cult can now count up one more.

In keeping with my action binge, I rewatched Predator to close out February last night:

While nowhere near as good as his follow up Die Hard, McTiernan makes a fun machismo fueled take on the alien slasher that Alien pioneered. It's hugely quotable and the jungle makes for an atmospheric setting, the Predator's tricks feel a little rusty compared to the Terminators and Xenomorphs of the cinematic world. It's not until the third act when the film allows Schwarzenegger to embrace his primal nature and confront the monster mono a mono sans goofy looking cloaking device that the movie really takes off.

Top 5 new watches of February:
1. McCabe & Mrs. Miller
2. Hard Boiled
3. The Ghost Writer
4. John Wick: Chapter 2
5. To Catch a Thief

Best rewatch:
Aliens/Terminator 2

Alright you fuckers, I just bought Miami Vice. I've only seen 3 Mann films - Thief, which is fanfuckingtastic, Collateral which is pretty great, and Public Enemy, which I found to be one of the most boring movies I've ever seen (this was pre-woke film fan omgkitty).

One thing I'll say is how much I loved how they handled the relationship between Sonny and Rico. They've both been doing this shit for way too long, but the implied history that they share makes it really easy to believe that they can talk business while still knowing that they have each others back. That moment there is about as explicit as the respect and friendship that they share gets in the entire film, and it manages to speak volumes.
