Netflix pulls episode of kid's TV show after parent discovers NSFW content

LOL that company didn't talk to lawyers or PR? ANd they admitted it?

Welp they are toast

Toast for what? They admitted it, edited the mistake in one day and delivered a new dickless episode to Netflix in less than a week. It's hard for them deny it since it's clearly there. This is also a $200 million revenue company, I doubt they don't know what they are doing.

I don't understand some of these responses. Maybe it's because I have really young kids.

How is it acceptable to have an erect penis in a children's show?

"Bu bu but, it took years to notice!" Or it just took years for someone to finally report it...

I'm all for that "busy body" mom bringing attention to this if it helps prevent studios from slipping inappropriate content into children shows in the future.

As much as you would like to, it's hard to sit down and watch every children show with your young child.

One of the reasons parents would prefer to let their children watch something from a trusted source like the Kids section of Netflix or Amazon is because, you'd think content would be screened beforehand of the random dicks, violence, porn, racist message, scary shit that could and has popped up in random YouTube video geared towards children.

Speaking of YouTube, how tf you allow scary or violent ads to pop up during children videos? C'mon YouTube... I may need to get ProTube or something to block ads in the YouTube app.

Thought this was going to be about Wakfu and got worried

Dofus (the game) is also absolutely full of hidden dicks and dubious word-plays (like, one of the main classes is called osamodas lol) and was really popular with kids. The innuendos and unfinished sentences in the Wakfu series are quite something too.
It's great.

It comes down to me not really understanding what parents like you are even afraid of. Your really young kids probably won't even know what they're looking at. And if they do...well now they've seen a scribbled dick. Is this supposed to be emotionally scarring or something. So yeah, it might be "inappropriate" but really, at the end of the day, why would you give a shit?

Oh boy some of these posts. So many of you have a hard time grasping the reality that people of different cultures view things through different lenses, and thus affects them differently, don't you.

This is a television show for incredibly young children. There are laws and regulations that ensure the content programmed for them is appropriate for them.

In America, many parents feel as though ages 2-5 may be too young for children to be exposed to sexual material, and hence, American guidelines reflect this. I understand it may be different in Europe and that's fine and wonderful, but this isn't about Europe.

This mother is well within reason to be upset about this given that in America, she has a certain expectation for her child's programming. She's not demanding change, she's demanding that already established guidelines be enforced.

Little kids will probably not understand what it is. Even if they did they will probably just giggle about it and that's it because peepee and poopoo are funny.

Yes, it is a penis.
Yes, it should be changed.
Yes, it was already fixed.

No, it is not a big deal.
No, no one is scarred.

If your child saw a penis and immediately their mind went to a sexual connotation then... well, uh, shit... that is actually worrying.

Talk to your child about what a penis and a vagina are. From as young as possible. Do it age appropriately. Kid sees your dick because they walked into the shower or changing? Tell them it is a penis and move on. So many people put their adult views on things on kids when they really don’t give a shit.

Holy crap, most European countries would be okay with that? That just seems bizarre to me.

If you think that's bizarre better not look up Vicky the Viking.

Europe as a whole is much more relaxed about nuditiy and sexuality because we prefer to educate rather than shame it away into the filfth box

Truthfully though, with all due respect, your understanding of the decisions he makes for his own children is inconsequential.

You assume parents make these decisions out of fear. Not always. Some parents have simply made the choice that they prefer their children be exposed to various subjects at a particular stage of life. Probably because they can be understand it.

I'm a Family Physician/Pediatrician and I do a lot of sexual education at local schools. There are established guidelines as to when it is best to introduce sexual material. These guidelines are based. It out of fear that children will become sexually adventurous, but when they i general have best been able to understand the material.

When it comes to children, something as complex as sexuality can cause a lot of confusion, and in worst case scenarios, possible abuse.

I mean on the one hand it's bad to put this in a children's series, on the other hand when you freeze-frame the video to take the screenshot to share it with all the moms you know so the press picks up on it you are surely resulting in vastly more harm than the original thing, which apparently hadn't been noticed in the last 4 years or whatever since it was apparently there despite surely being watched by tens or hundreds of thousands of people.

Its in that horrid category, where you shouldn't really keep it your self.

You're actually advocating visual penis jokes in children's tv?

Yeah everyone is also advocating people to start jerking off at parks around the world.

Stop with these concern exaggeration debates and look what people are actually saying. Most annoying trend on the internet. Applying some gross over reduced incoherent stretch on someone’s word to appear to be the morally justified superior while trying to make a thin point.

I guess the kids weren't very observant

They're not saying its right, They're just saying its no big deal. Right? That by extension, is advocating support for visual penis jokes in cartoons.

How is apathy for something the same as support? I think everyone can agree that it should be removed (and it already is) and nobody advocates for the inclusion of penis drawing in children's shows. They're just saying this shouldn't receive the big outcry some people make of it.

Perfect response. I'm a parent as well. Keep your subliminal messages to yourself.
Oh and youtube has a 3 month free trial of YouTube red, that blocks commercials

I dare say a child could look at that all day and never see an erect penis.

For perspective, I have a 3 yo boy.

What would you guys like me to explain exactly?
How is a drawing of a penis (and really, just some lines, it's not even a detailed thing) going to lead to confusion or abuse?

I mean, are these kids also confused when they see their parents naked?

Should it be there? No. But acting like it is some terrible thing is going a bit far.

And from a cultural shock point of view, this would be equivalent to...probably having a person hanging in the background of a kids show. And I don't think anybody in America would find that acceptable either.

Efteling, a really old dutch theme park (and one of the most beautiful parks in the world) has a very visible man hanging in a scary show that is meant to be for the whole family, yes even if its scary its meant also for kids.
Not to mention all the double entendres and a mermaid showing its bare breasts in a giant walktrough of storybook forest that is first and foremost made for kids since the 1960's. Kids dont give a fuck, parents dont give a fuck, kids dont turn perverts or violebt either because of them.

My takeaway from this thread is surprise that there's a new Maya the Bee. I don't remember that being a particularly popular or nostalgic show.

We used to make fun of it by changing the lyrics. "See her flying through the grass, with a stinger on her ass, MAYA, Maya the bee!"

I remember that more than any characters or anything that actually happened on the show.

The news to me is that they brought Maya the Bee back , I used to watch it on Nick Jr when I was 6. Had no idea it was anime.

I suppose you are americans but Maya was a popular anime in mainland Europe during the 1970's (with variois reruns until the early 90's). It was a cooproduction between a german studio and a japanese anime studio. I fact during the 70's, 80's and 90's lots of mainland europe countries got anime cooproductions with japanese studios. For example Germany got Maya the Bee, Spain got Dogtonian and Around the World with Willy Fog, Italy got Sherlock Hound...
It was a great era for european shows as most of them were great quality and really loved now in a nostalgic way.

Holy crap, most European countries would be okay with that? That just seems bizarre to me.

We dont give a flying fuck. Dragon Ball and Shin Chan have shown dicks of kids in the 80's in Spain and the kids watched them without uproars or consequences.
Theres a disgusting french cartoon called titeuf where sexuality is brought A LOT, it was meant for more than 10 year old kids isntead of really small ones, but it was at the same hours than any normal cartoon. I hate that show but still the point of sexuality in europe being not hidden in cartoons is there and more than normal.

Oh gosh, the horror. How many innocent young children have been exposed to that THING until now? There has to be a deep and thorough investigation about the mental damage this utterly disgusting scribble of a body part has caused so far.

You know, there's a lot of this in this thread, so I'm just wondering if anybody can show me evidence of a European kid's show with something similar being drawn.

Since it's apparently only the United States that has a problem with a drawn penis of this type in a show meant for 3-4 year olds, it should be really easy right?

You are aware this IS about a European TV show right? Specifically about a five years old episode nobody gave a fuck about, until it was shown in the US.

We are not actively putting dicks in our kids shows. But we are also not going to be "extremely disgusted by it" and acting like it would somehow lead to problems for these kids when someone put this in the background for 2 seconds.
