Yakuza 0 |OT| Yes, you can start with this one!

The biggest disappointment to me is the soundtrack...I mean, it's great and my favorite of the Yakuza OSTs, but only very few tracks in the game sound at least somewhat 80s, the rest, especially the regular battle themes, are very modern sounding.

And all the hostesses and other sidestory characters are various degrees of hardcore performers, not at all softcore.

I need to brush up on my JAV 'knowledge' it seems.

Loved the music in this one - but you're right its anything but 80s. There are really only very few elements that are 80s inspired here. Guess its pretty difficult/expensive to do that in a game.

You jest, but it does make the game much better.

"Heh! I know her!"

"Wonder who I'll run into next."

Adds another incentive to do all the sidestuff. The softcore balloon videos are kinda garbage though, and what's with that fish eye lense filter?

Right along this way good Sir.

Should have been the Yakuza-Soundtrack. :<

I already bought this game on launch day but if anyone had told me that Yakuza 0 is basically River City Ransom (Street Gangs) in 3D I would've played it sooner. I'm about 10 hours into the game and loving it, consider me a new Yakuza series fan.

I generally love the writing in the game but there are several moments where I wonder if they could have translated things a little more... I don't authentic? Majima saying "Holy Shitballs!" really stood out as something incredibly western but maybe that's something the Japanese like dropping a lot.

I'd agree with you. Having played all the other games, I just don't think Kiryu was ever the type to say "rad." Laying aside the fact that I don't think the Japanese even used that phrase, Kiryu's a pretty somber, intense guy. Even his best friend says he acts like an old man. And on top of that he's 20, not 14. Just a misfire any way you slice it.

And speaking of old men, all these old gangsters talking like cheerleaders from '90s movies saying how you were going to get served was kind of awful too. In general, I think it was a bunch of 20-somethings who don't even remember the '80s going a bit overboard trying to punch up the script and they harmed the tone a bit in doing so. Should have gone more literal in what they said or at least looked at better Western analogs like movies with Pacino, Deniro, Walken, and Nicholas.

Also wish they'd left the title cards before fights alone. The kanji looks better than that atrocious all caps font they used in its place. They left it alone the previous 4 games and it was better for it. The replacement font's so big and thick it hides the clan crests behind the boss names almost entirely.

The fifteen year old me would have LOVED this game to death. Nagoshi fulfilling childhood dreams.

Actually I'm surprised Sony is fine with stuff that is literally bordering on porn in their games. Opens the door for others to do similar things. DOAX3 is already doing that I suppose.

Seeing as you've played all the other games, you'd know that this is something that hasn't changed since day 1, and while I haven't played Y1 since it released, if I recall correctly, the gangsters were even more antagonistic back then ('F' word used prolifically) and they've toned it down somewhat since.

Everybody who likes old school beat them ups should play this!

I really need to check out River City Ransom - there's a new one isn't there?

When does the game open up more? Just started ch 2.

One of the things I hate about starting a yakuza game is that they're slow and restricted.

This game is definitely not as restrictive as past games where they force you to do a lot story stuff. You'll have a lot of time to do side activities.

I finished all substories for Goro and then
Jo Amon
hapenned. Great fight, though.
Trick with healing item was amazing, didn't see that coming.

Was there a jojo reference at the end?

And he said he would train 17 years and then come back, did it happen in any further games?

The events of Yakuza 1
take place 17 years later.

Nudge nudge, wink wink.

The
optional Amon boss fight is something that happens
in every mainline Yakuza game.

I would like to know more about Kiwami, since it is the remake of the original. Are there any new substories or new activities?

There are new substories and new activities.

There are a couple of new cutscenes that give a little bit more backstory to the characters, Nishiki for example.

You have all the combat styles from 0, including Dragon of Dojima.

Also, Yui Hatano.

I just started playing the Japanese version and wow it's so good. I hesitated for a bit since I already played two other games in the series recently but it was worth it. 60 fps + new era means Kamurocho feels incredibly fresh. It also feels like exploring is a bit less of a chore - battles are quicker and more enjoyable and loading seems pretty fast.

Same here, man. I won't probably go for platinum (I'm usually trying to get it, though), but I'm definitely going to finish all possible substories because they're awesome and missing them would feel like a waste. I hope I'll be able to buy Kiwami.

God, this is so good and I can't be more thankful to GAF and this OT in particular for letting me know about this masterpiece.

Awesome, can't wait!

Also, do you think Zero has much better story, or they're on the same level?

For some reason I just got around to finishing the Ultimate Battles and man that last battle with
Nishiki
... that was such a tease. I loved it.

Also, it was super cool that one of the battles was you fighting Kuze
5 times
back to back, hahaha.

Beat it last night. Greatly enjoyed the story but did not like the combat as much. The introduction of multiple styles was fun, but I hated the fact that all enemies and bosses just became sponges who would simply attack you while being hit. Not to mention every single attack you're able to perform has wayyyyy too much recovery. Grab an enemy? Takes forever. Pick up a couch? Takes forever. Variety aside, this is the most frustrating combat I've seen in the series.

Still, overall ranking: 2 > 1 > 0 > 4 > 3 > 5.

Yeah, I felt the same after 130h. The punches and kicks do have snap and feel good but blocking, dodging and grabbig felt more sluggish (dodging was fine on the "fast" style on either character) than I'm used to from top tier Japanese devs.

If Yakuza ever gets a great battle system (more fluid and responsive) it'll take the series to new heights.

Well it's been vastly improved since Yakuza 1 so there's that I guess. I thought Zeros combat was the best yet, it felt really snappy and responsive but of course it's not quite at say Nioh's level. One reason is because it's weaponed base and the weapon has a larger hit box than say a fist or a foot. If you miss on Yakuza it also goes thru the whole motion too so you can't just blindly attack everywhere.

Zeros is better in my opinion but Yakuza 1 also has a great story too.

Yakuza 0 benefits from having a whole continuity set that they could play around in. Also a higher budget and more creative freedom.

Yakuza 1 was by all intents and purposes, an experiment so they had to keep it as "grounded" as possible in regards to story. That being said, it's still a very enjoyable ride and the events of 0 mixed with the added stuff in Kiwami make the story even better and more personal that it already was.

Started this back up again, I am now up to the point where Kiryu is about to go to Sotenbori, is this a point of no return?, is there anything I should finish up in Kamarochu first?

You'll come back.

Normally I'd spoiler that but it's honestly not that big of a deal.

The game will clearly and explicitly tell you when the end is close so you'll have to opportunity to do literally every side activity before finishing the game. And you can even do them AFTER finishing the game in a separate mode.

I did think about it, but I though that there wasn't enough to warrant a spoiler this late in the games release, you could see it coming a mile off anyway...........

We really need a handy gif reply for this.

Someone should make a gif of like 10 enemies charging at you at the same time with the words "Don't equip the Charismatic Autobiography" flashing every 1 and a half second.

Or just add it to a regular gif of a guy getting beat up.

Oh my GOD, this is perfect. If Yakuza 0 goes on sale during E3, then we for SURE need to make a thread trying to sell people on it.

And this needs to be in the OP for it!

Also unrelated but could you make the same gif but just replace the word autobiography with Photo? Because Yakuza: Kiwami has the Charismatic Photo instead of the Charismatic Autobiography and we're gonna need it for that game too!

Not right now. I just googled Oldboy gif, found a good one then searched for animated gif caption :)

I'm pretty sure the dancing YakuzaGAF one was done with the same online app.

Yakuza 6 is coming West right? I only own a PS4, will I miss a ton of story and the likes going from Zero straight to 6?

Appearently you'll also be missing a lot of side activities with 6.:p

I dunno, I'm still really looking forward to Kiwami, but as far as 6 is concerned, after everything I've heard I can't muster up any hype at all.

Remember to play Kiwami first though, it's coming late August!!

Yes, Yakuza 6 is gonna come out early 2018 and while you certainly won't be as up to speed on some of the characters if you had played the previous games, you'll be fine. The game offers a recap function and the stories are really very self contained.

Thanks both. I'm aware of Kiwami and I definitely plan on getting it, I'm still fairly early (chapter 5) in Zero but really enjoying it.

It'll be a shame if they cut back on the side stuff in 6, it adds a lot of charm and fun to the game.

I'm on chapter 7 of this game right now, and I have to say, it is such a welcome return to form after the bloated exercise in excess that was Yakuza 5. It might not be quite as good as 2, but it's definitely on the cusp of being masterpiece material. The story has me hooked in a way that the franchise hasn't achieved in years, and after 5's laughably incoherent plot, this is just what the doctor ordered.

Also, Majima is fantastic in this. Makes you wonder why it took so long for him to be a playable character. He is charisma incarnate. He's making Kazuma look bad in the process!
