Atlus announces Deep Strange Journey for 3DS

Yeah, same here. I mean what else does Atlus USA have in their backlog?

After Persona 5 and Caligula Effect are out, I think the rest is all 3DS games, no? SMT HD is just beginning proper development, so we're left with EO5, Radiant Historia, Etrian MD2 and DSJ. Out of those, I imagine EO is already being localized, and after that I imagine DSJ would take priority over the rest considering the SMT brand already has a more or less proven audience in the west.

I'm sure I'm missing a couple of titles, but all things considered focusing on 3DS titles doesn't really sound too crazy to me when most of what their parent company is making is 3DS games anyway.

Yakuza Kiwami, Yakuza 6, Valkyria Revolution, Utawarerumono 2&3 are the rest of the titles that Atlus USA is working on.

I absolutely dislike that I'm starting to sound like the Atlus Defense Force, but I honestly get the impression that this is less about trying to erase Kaneko's artistic legacy and more about "unifying" the characters by using the same (probably more marketable) artstyle throughout all characters.

I vastly prefer Kaneko over Doi, but I'd rather have Doi do all the design work if it makes sure that nothing looks out of place instead of a hodgepodge of various art styles like the mess that is SMT4.

Sure, I didn't mean to imply that this was some conscious decision to remove Kaneko's work from all their titles. I mean he still supposedly works there. But as others said, it would've been better just to redo the existing art with high-res versions so the existing designs were preserved.

I bristle at the thought that Atlus are now making artistic decisions based on whether the style is marketable or not. In the PS2/DS era, I found Atlus to be a refreshing company who wasn't afraid to take risks artistically and thematically. Nowhere else could you find someone with art like Kaneko's. It made their games unique and special and defined the slightly creepy-but-hauntingly-beautiful vibe of all SMT titles.

I'm a bit sad that it seems like Doi has redrawn the characters. I'm going to miss Kaneko.

I'm also hoping for no demon co-op. But maybe I'm hoping for too much there.

... Maybe they'll offer the original portrays as a DLC in this one too.

After so many ports & remasters & remakes I was expecting another one on the 3DS, but not SJ, too soon. I'd be much more pleased with a SMT 1 or 2 remake and many probably agree, but hey, this is still great and I'm still going to buy it.

... Yeah, definitely forgot the whole Sega situation. Never mind then! Back to praying.
The fact EOV isn't out is really worrying because EOIV's timeframe from release to localization is... uhh... the same as from when EOV came out, with no news whatsoever! I do hope they're just waiting to get P5 out, but between that, their announced titles, and just having Sega's workload too it may be that for once it actually fell through the cracks. And even if that hits what of other late 3DS games? They have shown they'll skip VERY late console releases, even if they're usually better about them than other publishers (like... errr... Sega.)

Wait... old art DLC?

That's got to be free right? Otherwise that's a really obvious case of withholding content just to make extra money.

Why is that even a thing.

Not necessarily. Apparently the Radiant Historia old art DLC doesn't include the new characters.

Wait... what's the fucking point of making it DLC then? Let me pay for old content with no extra or any work put into it.

Though the DLC is normally free day one or free with an LE, but it's still stupid.

Edit: Also it has not been said anywhere we're getting the old art as DLC. People were just relating that to Radiant Historia (I think).

They're doing it with Radiant Historia, too. Edit: Oh, wait you were already talking about RH, lol.

worse art and save anywhere? wow

I don't understand the save anywhere problem.

Yes it trivializes risk in the game as you can save anytime you want meaning if you want to you can never lose any progress from dying. But also it's almost a necessary feature for handheld games especially long RPGs where people don't want to be losing hours of progress all the time due to their environments.

I actually liked how Soul Hackers handled that actually. You could install a Save Anywhere application in the GUMP but it takes up slots in your GUMP. Maybe they can make it a sub app in DSJ? So you have to waste your resources for the ability to be a coward.

Has the save anywhere feature been confirmed at all, or are we all just assuming it's a thing based on SMT4?

Personally I despise this feature because it comes off as a lazy way to adapt the game design to a hanheld. I'd much prefer something like autosaving upon entering a new floor, quick saves, or maybe a combination of both. As it is tho it removes literally all risk, ruining the tension and mood for me.

All these enhanced ports and yet SMT3 stays stuck to PS2.

Surely Atlus USA is working to release it as a PS2 on PS4 title... Any day now!...

It's on PS3 as well. And if Atlus brings their PS2 classics catalogue from PS3 to PS4, it'll eventually be on PS4 as well.

The PS3 port has issues, same with the DDS duology.

Not even a question, they do it to every update. Look at SH.

Well, more save points at least. Then you have an app for save anywhere later on, if memory serves.

new girl looks out place, just plopped in from Persona. Where the hell is your military gear, you can't map out all of Eridanus looking like that, smh.

That's actually kinda disappointing. Strange Journey isn't really the same if it's not constantly kicking me in the balls. Where's the fun in wandering enormous, multi-dimensional floors filled with warps, poison tiles, and crazy strong demons you can't escape from if I can just save anywhere?
The new difficulty comes from saving right in front of a boss you can't escape from.

Yeah, that is a huge part of the overall design of the game. Budgeting your ability to make it a little bit further versus party wipe. Kind of a big thing to fuck with in terms of gameplay.

I feel like whenever this game gets localized (yes, when, not if, because I won't be a pessimist), this name is going to change.

"Deep Strange Journey" sounds like a name of a porn.

I really enjoyed SJ so I'm in hopefully they flesh the plot a bit more. The premise is super interesting to me. I suppose there will be a 4th path for the new character.

I thought 3DS was declared dead since the Switch is the new portable.

Yes, from the day the Switch was announced, there will probably be no further significant 3DS games which begin development. Unfortunately for everyone ready to move on to a new platform, it will take a while for publishers to finish shitting out the last batches of 240p turds that were held back due to industrial constipation.

I wish they showed a little bit of gameplay. I have no clue what this is about.

Gameplay will be modified a bit, but very close to the original. That should tell you all you need to know.

It's a first person dungeon crawler, which has in my opinion some of the best dungeon design of any SMT and a great difficulty curve.

Also the best chaos hero.

Also in my opinion the best written story/characters of a mainline game.

They have said DSJ is going to be easier, but I'm hoping they don't fuck with the difficulty curve or the game structure too much, as that would kill one of the best things about the game.

To be honest, how much are we expecting the graphics to be improved in this "remake" anyway? I'm expecting sprites and the quality of new sprites to basically be the same, maybe filtered a bit. Backgrounds will be of a higher resolution but I doubt it'll look as good as EOV. I expect a bunch of new full screen event artwork depicting the major story events as static anime style "cutscenes" ala SMT IV though. Those are going to be ugly.

Yeah, almost every major beat in SJ is done with static sprites. I wonder if they'll do new NPC art, some of the biggest events are with characters that have no portraits.

I absolutely loved Strange Journey, but I don't know if I could handle another play through, assuming they keep the difficulty level similar to the original. No other game has kicked my ass quite as hard as Strange Journey. It's impossible for me to not be excited for more SMT though, so I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this to see what they change/add.

I'm so down for this. I am disappointed that this game, Fire Emblem, and Radiant Historia are not coming to switch. I want to start building my switch library and move on from the 3ds. Still more SMT is always good. I still haven't played Apocalypse so I will prob try to play that before this drops. Good news.

I love the game, but pretty it ain't.

GREAT negotiations, some of my favorites. Raidou 2 is still king though.

Oh, had no idea this is a port. I'm never played these types of games before, but they look exhausting if they're nothing but dungeons. Where do you buy equipment in a game with only dungeons?

There's a vendor in the base camp area. The good stuff generally isn't bought though, but found in chests. It's definitely a very exhausting and oppressive game.

The ship that you use to enter the Schwarzwelt becomes your hub. Sometimes you'll decide to go back to your ship when you've had enough of the dungeon exploring, and you can hand things you've found to some scientists on your ship. They will do research on them and this unlocks upgrades you can buy.

Most of the rest of the items you get from quest rewards or chests you find in the dungeons.

That's roughly what I remember anyway.

It would be pretty cool if the crew members got portraits. There were some cool members of the crew that I grew fond of after awhile.

Do you think they're going to keep the whole "the protagonist's nationality depends on where the game is published" thing? I imagine that may be less doable with the voice acting, unless they made America and Europe's version both be US Marines. I doubt they'd rerecord lines to make the Space Marine be a European special forces operative.
assuming it gets to Europe in the first place

Have the EU version be Simon Pegg from Hot Fuzz.

I mean I'm sure Deep Silver will throw us a bone and give us a digital release at the very least, right? They didn't exactly push Apocalypse but come on. :(

Assuming it gets localized of course. I really shouldn't be doubting that either but uh, where is Etrian Odyssey V?

I love Strange Journey but eh... I can already play it on my 3ds? Same with Radiant Historia. I love Atlus games but these remasters don't make me want to buy games I already own a second time. They make me want to not buy the games the first time and just wait.

I hope this isn't the 3ds game teased during the switch direct.
