Activision seems to be ready to present a new Guitar Hero prior to E3 (plenty of rumours of a reboot have been circulating). At least this is what is being suggested by an invitation that was sent out by Activision to media representatives in Germany. The mail states that an event is scheduled for April 1st 2015 taking place in "Hamburg Rock City". Among other things, the publisher would be happy if the journos would "rock the shack with us!" - a pretty clear indication that this is to do with a new music game and given the rumours of a new Guitar Hero...

In. Let's see how GH vs. RB shapes up this year. It's a more even fight between FSG and Harmonix than Neversoft and Harmonix, IMO, but if no DLC from last gen transfers, Harmonix has already bolted out of the gate and into the lead.

Great if so. Guitar Hero series was always superior to Rock Band for me, due to its focus on scoring and fluidity of the in-game UI.

Activision releasing dozens of Guitar Hero games in a short period and saturating the market is part of the reason why rhythm games went out of style a few years ago.

I'd like to say that I hope they play it safe and keep it at one game like Harmonix is planning to do, but their history says otherwise...

Sweet if true. Always preferred Guitar Hero, I felt it was more lenient on what it would accept as a hit note than Rock Band. That, and Warriors of Rock was a pretty damned good game.

I don't see the need for a Guitar Hero this year. Part of me wants Rock Band to get all the sales it can without another music game sapping its sales.

And if it's successful, I'm sure Activision will not hesitate to ruin the genre again with retail releases every 4-6 months.

I'm not sure why people like to single out Guitar Hero for the death of the genre. It was both RB and GH together contributing to it with roughly the same amount of output.

I hope they go back to a guitar-only game and stop trying to compete with Rock Band. GH was always best when it was its own thing.

Exactly.....here they come to burn the genre again.
Competition is good but i would prefer for Rock Band to be the lone horse for the time being. Heres hoping Activision plays it slow and more like a service rather than an annual thing.

I disagree. GH5 was great but the setlist was sporadic. I think if we had gotten GH5 with GHWT's setlist, RB would have had a reason to sweat.

Didn't GH just wind up copying the star progress meter from Rock Band with GH5? There's really not a whole lot of difference between the two when it comes to the displays during gameplay. Adjustable highway speeds, on the other hand...

Agreed. And this time around, I don't think Guitar Hero will be able to "kill" Rock Band if it goes how Harmonix wants. There won't be a Rock Band 5 for it to kill, and everyone who wants Rock Band will already have access to it without needing a new release.

I hope Guitar Hero focuses on the shredding stuff and Rock Band focuses on the overall band with loads of genres. Gave me a reason to own both.

It really should be. It doesn't make sense to try to sell a "song collection" like they had in years past.

Guitar Hero released six games in 2009 alone. Seven if you wanna count the arcade game. Eight if you wanna count DJ Hero.

All I wanna know is why? They didn't give a rat's ass about dlc last gen, and I'm supposed to buy another one of their overcharted messes with no guarantee of any of the DLC carrying over to the several sequels they'll make. No thanks Activision. Only Harmonix is getting my money cause they actually care.

No it really wasn't. Harmonix released 6 in the span of 3 years. Activision? 11.

Yeah it was pretty dumb of them to do it that, way, but in the end you got a pretty good bang for your buck. If you already had the instrument, $60 for 80 or so songs is cheaper than buying the same amount of songs in DLC, if I remember correctly.

I'm fairly sure both RB and GH will start moving towards a "Base game, then add-ons via DLC" model now that it's been proven that it can work. The need to release a new game every few months or so is unnecessary now.

I'd be excited but unlike Harmonix who went through the process of relicensing as many downloadable tracks as they can so they can transfer over, Activision just removed every bit of GH DLC from the store, even the free stuff, so on these new consoles everyone will have to start afresh. With RB4, I'll probably have around 900 songs taking away RB3 unless it exports and other tracks that won't go over (Well, probably 150 in total given SCEE's tendency of not giving a damn about rhythm game DLC). With GH it'll just be around 80 with either a whole new team who have never done a rhythm game before and we'll have a Guitar Hero III again (which is a bad thing. Terrible, awful, horrible charting. Thankfully, Neversoft got better) or it'll be done by Beenox. Beenox are the better choice, although their experience with the GH series isn't all that much with Smash Hits (which was based on the GH Metallica engine and had that awful 5 note chord for Raining Blood) and the doing the GH5/WoR DLC (Which was better, although varied) so they won't be that much better.

Harmonix has already stated that this will be the only release this gen, and they'll update it and have dlc throughout the cycle.

I'll buy it if it has some cool songs to play.

Gh2,3,world tour and warriors of rock had 90% garbage boring songs on there. I want stuff i can't play on guitar in real life. Gimme more satch, vai, malmsteen, becker etc

not strumming slow chords for 4 minutes, or having massive breaks in between. Kiss i'm looking at you

Yeah, GH will have a big disadvantage from having to start back from square one. For whatever reason, Activision never put DLC as a priority, despite the genre being so well adapted for it.

Also, it's virtually guaranteed that FreeStyle Games are the ones working on this. I can't imagine it being in better hands, given their experience with the genre.

Yeah, I'm all for competition, but it would be nice if Rock Band had a year to itself first. Guitar Hero will always win on brand recognition, so RB could use the head start if we're going to start the music game war again.

It would be interesting if Guitar Hero went to a pure guitar game again though. That would sufficiently differentiate the two franchises.

You're pretty much asking for a game with no sense of difficulty progression and a very limited genre setlist. Basically something that just won't sell. Given the limited amount of songs like that in previous GH/RB games including DLC, I wouldn't get your hopes up too much.

True, I forgot about them although I don't know what they've done since DJ Hero. Wikipedia says only a Karaoke game for the Wii U, and that was a few years ago. I guess they're more likely than Beenox, what with them having been shoved on Spider-Man/Skylanders duty, but for all we know it'll be a brand new studio and we'll have all sorts of problems with charting and the engine. Again, I refer you to GHIII and how ridiculously open its front end timing window was.

Guitar hero will win on brand recognition? Seriously? Wasn't rock band doing quite well on its own? I certainly don't remember "guitar hero night" at local bars being as popular as "rock band night".

I usually end up only playing songs in tier 7 and 8. Guitar Hero 3 is the worst with this. Only a few songs have actual good solos to play. Cult of Personality is definitely the best track in the game for pure solos, but then it's too easy after that.

It was consistently selling better from most sales figures I remember seeing though it was probably pretty close around RB3/GH:WH. But that could totally change this time. Having access to previous game's DLC is a huge deal for a lot of people, but at the same time, I know so many casual RB players (usually families) that never bought a single DLC track or even knew that was a thing they could do.

Amen.

The dragonforce dlc and a few suprise songs like the halo theme were pretty cool to play, but the vanilla game lacked any kind of challenge really. A few riffs from slayer and slipknot and the cult solos, outside of that it was a very dull ride.

Guitar hero Metallica was the best in the series and was gutted to hear the rumoured Guitar hero Megadeth turned into DLC for rockband. Holy wars, tornado of souls et al would of been brilliant to thrash away to

How about some representation for metal as well? More pantera, arch enemy and fuckton of opeth is the shit i need. Black rose immortal or Hessian peel would be an orgasmic journey if i get to combine guitar and vocals...would also be pretty funny
