Has Bloodborne caused a recent surge in people reading the Berserk manga?

Not for me i don't like reading comics/books etc

Maybe if you play those games next to someone constantly yelling about how amazing you are for cutting 100 dudes in half while dumping buckets of blood on your TV and take frequent breaks to watch some tentacle porn and Tinker Bell cartoons.
Otherwise the two aren't similar at all.

I already gave it a try a few years ago but the really ugly (bad?) drawing style was a turn off.

Poor bastards all. They get to join the rest of us wondering if Kentaro Miura is ever going to bother continuing it once they catch up.

The whole capital city after the rebirth stuff reminds me a lot of Bloodborne. Prior to that it reminds me more of the Souls games. Image for example purposes:

The apostles remind me a lot of the hunters.

A lot of people have gotten interested in Berserk based upon the Souls games. I'm super pleased though to see many starting to read Lovecraft after playing Bloodborne.

It all starts here.

Yes, the manga is better guys.

EDIT:^ That's me thinking wow hope Beserk is exactly like Bloodborne in every way.

...oh it's not.

And I never googled it again.

Yeah, fuck that. Nothing against the fans, but sheeeeeeit man, for that much money I could spend a ton of money on other things I actually need.

I don't think $110 is that big of a deal, however word of warning I wouldn't try telling people on this forum. There are geniuses on here buying multiple Titan X cards then wanking over a fucking benchmark. It's like they are completely disconnected from reality.

Over the past month I've been reading Berserk and I'm enthralled. I put it off because the opening chapter is fucking crazy weird, too much for me at 16-17.

Now that I'm all in, I get highly upset that this manga and others of its ilk (Gantz, Claymore) don't have proper videogame adaptations, at least stateside. That Dragon's Dogma collab made it even worse with how shitty warriors are in that game. I think FromSoft could pull it off, definitely. DeSo/DaSo reminds me of the style and movement in Berserk, if they could get the Dragon Slayer attack animations and speed up, it could be perfect.

Maybe a FromSoft X Omega Force collab could work?

$8.70 per book of Berserk is not that high (and shipping within the USA from that site is $4.00 for fed ex ground no matter how much you order, it's amazing.) This is hundreds of pages of intricately detailed work and a captivating plot that was obviously labored over forever. that's a steak burrito from chipotle. and unlike the burrito, you can always sell your book back after you're done, making the actual cost only a few bucks.

I can make the same argument about the other stuff that is competing for the same money in my budget though. That's my point. I buy a lot of vinyl, for example, and I see people make the analogous argument there about how records last longer than a meal and took so much effort, etc. Sure, it's all true, but one has to decide where to put their efforts.

I feel like Berserk is more like the Souls series, but even then... that's a bit of a stretch. I doubt it would net a considerable amount of people. Also the manga has sucked for the past... years!

*edit* I don't know if you're purposefully disregarding it as "improper", but Berserk got a Dreamcast game.

It's a bunch of factors coming together at once:

*Bloodborne being released and it has a lot of fucked up imagery similar to Berserk. Dark Souls 2 Remaster is released right after which also has some Berserk similarities.

*Dragons Dogma Online also is another Berserk-style game.

*Screwattack released their Gutts vs Nightmare Deathbattle video just recently. Unfortunately they spoiled a lot of key plot points in that video which even though is a bad thing got a lot of people interested in Berserk.

*The first part of the Berserk movies is put on Netfix which is also a big driving force. I expect they will put the other 2 on there as well which will also drive up interest. The movies are not as good as the manga or even the anime but even a "highlight' version of Berserk is amazing and pulls people in.

*People realizing that there are a lot of crap moe anime/manga out there that they are fed up with and they want something different. Berserk is the opposite of that shit (well mostly the opposite) so they are getting interested in it.

This has all resulted in Berserk manga sales being up across the board.

Not just Bloodborne, but a bunch of other factors too, like the movies being up on Netflix. Kinda like this renewed interest in DBZ because of the new movie bringing back a popular villain and a pretty good game that does things differently.

Edit: or what Dahbomb just said.

People that liked Bloodborne should read Lovercraft since the game basically is inspired on his lore.

This is a note he wrote about their books :

Now all my tales are based on the fundamental premise that common human laws and interest and emotions have no validity or significance in the vast cosmos-at-large.

There are a lot of refererences or even related places from Lovercraft lore in Bloodborne , by example Lovercraft's MISKATONIC UNIVERSITY is Bloodbornes BYRGENWERTH. Miskatonic university studied the occult , it had a vast collection of obscure books including one genuine copy of the Necronomicon and also university's medical school made research of the occult. To the eyes of the people the university was like any other , it competed with Harvard as the two most important ones.

So if you liked the game go read Lovercraft , specially :

The Dunwich Horror
At the Mountain Madness
The Shadow out of time

Why is the manga never going to be finished? Also the anime intro isn't all that appealing. Is the manga more grim?
Because the guy writing it takes like months to release one chapter. The pace is really stagnant at this point... I think the last chapter was released over 6 months ago. And the manga has been on going for a good 20 years now. Also the author has stated that there are at least 15 more volumes worth of story left so at the pace he's going we will all die of old age before it's finished.

Yeah the manga is more grim but the anime and the movies are grim too. They all start out slow/normal but then things start to hit the fan real quick.

I started Berserk when I played through Dark Souls for the first time (about a year ago)....I'm just at the 3rd volume .

It's pretty good so far.

Funny.

Just started with the series a few days ago. I already gave it a try a few years ago but the really ugly (bad?) drawing style was a turn off. Saw some later pictures and the mangaka cleary got better over time, but overall the visuals are very low. But after the name came up again with all these Bloodborne discussions I really want to give it another try and hopefully finish it this time.

Visuals very low? Berserk? What the fuck am i reading?

Unless you were sarcastic.

Most likely mentioned many times but seriously, I wouldn't start on the anime even though its better than the movies. You will be left frustrated and unsatisfied with where it stops.

People using the cost of the manga as an excuse... have you tried typing "berserk manga" into Google?

Serious question.

lol, you are really taking that trailer as indicative of what we mean? That trailer is showing stuff early on in the manga. We can't really get into spoilers but that trailer is really not indicative of what the series becomes.

Multiple factors but most people just blame IDOLM@STER even though it's not really a cause anymore. The manga is a lot more brutal with content, yes.

Is it Vocaloid or Kancolle now? I'm a bit behind the times about Miura's hobbies...

About the anime, i'm in the thinking that neither the anime tv series nor the Golden Arc OVAs does justice to the manga... but well, if it serves as a incentive to pick up the manga it's good enough.

Where did i read that Kentaro Miura doesn't have a lot of assistants and prefers to do almost all the drawing job by himself?

Miura also began some side project like Gigantomakhia so...well...

I don't even care about Bloodborne or the Souls games and I started reading Berserk the other day because I casually browsed a thread about it and Bloodborne here on GAF.

It's all right so far. Expecting it to get better.

Bloodborne definitely put me in the mood for cosmic horror. So when I was looking up eldritch abominations, I saw pictures from the Ghost Ship story of Berserk. So I read the Ghost Ship arc with the sea god because it seemed very Shadow Over Inssmouthy. Purdy good! I plan on reading it from the very beginning some time.

He's not entirely incorrect here, the earlier issues of Berserk didn't have the best art it wasn't until deep into the Golden Arc did the art pick up. Compare current Fantasia art direction to the first couple of volumes, it's like comparing two different mangas altogether.

When Berserk is good... it's REALLY fucking good!

Spoilers of course.

The TV series covering the Golden Age is great, even though it's lacking in actual animation.

Overall the Golden Age is Berserk at its highpoint and it certainly dropped off slowly since.

Because really, the further the read the more this actually holds true:

Lost Children is the best arc of the whole series. There's been plenty of better arcs than the Golden Age ones.

And people are too lazy when they make it seem being "grimdark" is in itself a flaw.

The only arc that is "bad" is the Troll arc. That shit is legitimately awful although the ending to it is pretty good.

The Millenium Falcon arc is great as is the Fantasia arc both of which has less of the grimdark stuff that people like to complain about (in fact this is the point where many fans start complaining that it's getting too "happy go lucky" with Gutts and his party members).

The most grimdark arcs are the Blackswordsman and Conviction arcs but there is still legitimate story telling and character development in both as well as strong themes and ample foreshadowing.

Berserk isn't just grimdark for the sake of being it, it has a legitimate story underneath the blood and sex. If it did not have it then it wouldn't have the following that it does.

No.

correlation does not imply causation.

I would argue otherwise in this case. Berserk has been running for a long while. He emphasizes a 'recent surge' which can definitely be attributed to the Souls series and Bloodborne (as well as the talk surrounding them, complete with Berserk analogies).

Also the mention that it might have more to do with Netflix now streaming the movie is also incorrect. The trend started in March which was before Netflix had the movie.
